Comp Hounds
I haven't owned a lot of winners but the few I have were top of the line to me.
My first real comp dog was UKC NITECH ACHA NITECH BEAR'S OLD BONES.Bones only needed a few bucks to make PKC CH when he died at the age of 3 years and 3 days old. He had blasto, back then there wasn't much to be done for it.
Bones hunted in a dead run. When he was a pup he was a for real OUTLAW. He would run anything that made a track, but he would put a coon at the end of it and quick. You could tree him on a locate and he would be there no matter how long it took you to get to him. He was all chop with a GREAT BIG LOCATE. As he got older he gave up most of the trash. he hunted as for as needed to find a coon. I always thought he could tree coons the other dogs didn't even know was there. He was acoused of making coons lots of times. Bones was the only dog that I say would be in the 80% range of having a coon when he treed. He hunted for himself. If something else wanted to tag along, it didn't matter to him.He was my best dog by far.
Then there was UKC NITECH ACHA NITECH BEAR'S BAD BOY. Bad Boy was off Pipkens Red Rooster and a female I called Pepper. Pepper was off Bone's and a Fireball female I called Annie. I bought Annie from Joe Melton. Bad Boy was all COONDOG. He hunted extra hard and had plenty of coon sence about him. He just seemed to know where the coons were at. No matter where you hunted him. He opened on the first sign of a coon. He would drift an old feed track and heat it real quick. He was a stay put treedog and would do what ever he had to do to keep his tree. He could tree coons twenty yards from the truck or a mile across the bottoms, what ever it took. Back in those days there was more MEAN dog in the hunts than ever. He got eat up so many times he go off on the mean sde himself. I gave him to a local kid for a pleasure dog. He kept him until he died of a ripe ole age.
GRNITECH BEAR'S CROSSCOUNTRY RED DEUCE. Deuce is off Rabble and Sterkis's machine gun Annie. Deuce was a goofy young pup. Extra long ears big feet and clumsy as an ox.He started growing into himself at about 5 months old. He didn't do a whole lot at first. Just run around and be a big pup. At 5 and a half months old it was like Deuce moved out and something else moved in. When he started it was with a BANG. I singled him out at 6 months old, I mean I singled him out. He hunted solo for several months. I shot coon out to him almost every night. I walked lots of miles to him. Some times he had a coon and sometimes not. Deuce is bawl on track and CHOP on tree. He has a locate anyone can call. He hunts very hard if the coons ain't down you are in for a long night. He WILL GET TREED SOMEWHERE AND STAY. Deuce hunts to please me, you want see a happier dog when you get to his tree. He loves it.
CH NITECH CROSSCOUNTRY GINGER SNAP. She is off Deuce and NITECH STERKIS'S MIDNIGHT MUSIC MAKER. Music maker is a litter mate to Rocky Jason and I gave Ginger to a friend as a pup. The friend didn't do anything with her. He did let her run loose on the farm until we got her back. Jason took Ginger on her first coon hunt along with an old dog. She treed that night all by herself. He shot that coon out to her and the rest is history. Ginger hunts out as far as she needs to find a coon. She is super compitive, she thinks she has to be ahead of everything. And most of the time she is. She was a first strike dog when I first put her in the hunts. I have noticed she ain't quite as quick to strike as she was. I believe she is thinking about what she is doing more the she use to. She is trying to grab that compitive edge. She is bawl on track and chop on tree. the hotter the track the bigger the locate. Ginger was in 7 hunts with 3 firts. She has only been in one NITECH hunt so far and she won her cast that night.
And there is up and coming Dan. Dan and Ginger are litter mates. We will talk about him later. He is and will be a winner.
how she won
The best competition dog I have owned so far was GrNiteCh Sawblade Fiddle. She won most all her casts by being a very fast strike dog 100 everytime and accurate tree dog. She would tree with other dogs if there was a coon there and she would split if there wasn't . She was very hard for other people to call off of. Chop mouth both track and tree. She was for the most part a 1st tree dog also. Her top quality's was her brains and her nose. She had huge drive and she would stay treed until you got to her, hours if need be, pull proof. She was hunted in PKC and had won over $1500.00 in just 2months. several added purse hunts. She was 5 dollars short of PKC Ch when the local club dropped the hunts. Her highest cast win was +875 ,0 minus on 4 coon. In that cast she treed one by herself on the first drop for +225 all other dogs had when another way. She was recast into the other 3 dogs one of which struck in as soon as I had recast her. She was able to get in there and still get 2nd strike and 1st tree on that coon. That was the only 2nd strike she took all night, next 2 coons she was 1st and 1st on. That is how she won many of her cast. She always had the coon.

shane how can a man get a pup out of jj breed of dog I have looked for years but every one to keep all the pups they raise for their self thanks for any help mickey York Beattyville ky
quote:well, they usually go to competition hunters who have proven they can train a pup and title it in competition. To this point, I have given every pup I have raised to people who fit that description at no charge. Rodger Shabel just bred Dual Grand Amber to jj jr semen and she had 2 pups...he usually charges for his pups but you might check with him and see if he may sell one...they would be a week or two old.

The best post on here
I am enjoying reading this post. Lots of great info. These different explanations on dogs are very valuable in reguards to seeing what some of the lines traits are carrying through. Example I am hunting a female right now that has a lot of Yellow River and Fireball along with Boone and CD blood. I can tell you solo She is tight on track. Unless it's Hot. I can watch her hunt out on Garmin and tell you the min She is working a track but not opening. However you put her with dogs. She gets struck sometimes first but mostly a 2nd strike dog. The other thing that She does is tree quick. If She locates she is treed. She has Fiddle in her background. She is all Chop mouth other than a triple Chop locate. I see some similarities from what Kelly posted. She started treeing as soon as I introduced her. She was trained with two big Male Walker dogs with huge mouths that I would consider the type of dogs that would intimidate other dogs. Not Mean but tree dogs big and loud. She wasn't afraid of them at all would stand in between those two and knock it like a dog should early on in life. She is still fairly young but what I like about her is She don't need anything to go and tree a coon, hunts solo great. She hauls well. Likes to compete. I see similarities from her style in dogs that I have hunted going back to Twister and Yellow River. I really don't know much about the CD line. Have hunted with several different dogs off Boone and can see those similarities to. Doing what we are doing in this post and not being line blind. Making crosses with Good Females back to good studs is what is changing what's going on in our breed. Please keep this post going without any arguments over dumb stuff. Thanks to all for posting.

Honest competion hunters make the hunts fun! Cheaters never win!!!!!
I have hunted GrNt Jones Turnback Creek Yel Punk in several hunts and he always just trees more coons than the other dogs. He strikes for 25 might make 3 barks on the ground and roll up treed. The more coon the worse you beat the competition. Tree the first coon every time, didn't care to be by himself or have 3 packing. PKC UKC it didn't matter when we scored more than 2 coons I don't think we lost a cast. I have gotten the big end of the minus on a slick and still came out on top. Being able to hear him locate and tree with 2 or 3 dogs opening between you and him was always a big plus. Soft mouthed dogs you would be completely drowned out on tree. Several nights didn't have enough points to win the hunt, think he had 15 nt ch cast wins before granding out.
Most of the other redbone I have hunted won by being accurate and keeping a clean score card. This small ball doesn't impress me, might get you a dog granded out in a couple years of taking it to every hunt within driving distance.
I have a dog that can outscore the rest of the cast packing a first or second strike. He lays up a lot of coons and is accurate. Ike is has more balance than the other redbones I have hunted with, most around here have to be by themselves or win with the least minus in the @kc hunts. Hope to hunt the winter classic and SS with him this year, last year finances kept us from being there, but got another handler on board for this year.

Grch Grnitech PR Coon Commander Big Red managed to title out as a 1 year old. What helped him make nitech at 13 months old with all first place wins was his winding ability. Most nights when the wind is high or rain has flooded the woods red would be able to get to himself and tree a coon. He can hunt nose down or head up so no matter the conditions or whether it's a track or lay up he can tree a coon when most dogs are having trouble. What helped make him Grnitech was his ability to tree a coon at your feet or a mile in. Also the fact that he doesn't back on slick treeing dogs and waste time in a hunt.

I purchased Nt Ch Mandolin as pup from Kelly Hyde in 2003. I had hunted with Yellow River Doc at Southern Redbone Days and was impressed with his drive and mouth. Since she is off Doc and Fiddle she hunted a lot like both of them. Hunted hard, squalling chop mouth, loud stay put tree dog. She had 3 wins to grand, but kids and ballgames kept me from finishing her. I bred her 4 times and all produced some kind of coon dogs but the best cross was with Banjo III. That cross produced Gr Nt Mandy II and Gr Nt PKC Ch Jon Henry. The Mandy dog hunted fast and hard with her head off the ground looking for trees rather then tracks. I have instructed people that have bought pups off my dogs to competition hunt them this way. When they bark strike them, whether its 1 second after you cut them or 20 minutes. They don't babble. When they tree, tree them. Don't pitch them in or hope they are gonna cover another dog. They are fast tree dogs and won't locate a bunch of trees before they tree. One bark tree dogs. I have gotten plenty of first strikes with Mandy II because she gets out hard and fast. She will tree with another dog but likes to get by herself. She has not taken a bunch of minus but is not perfect. Was 5 minutes from being in a final four in St Matthews SC (80 dogs) when she came on a bad tree. Ouch. Will get deep and be by herself a bunch. Can hear her at 1000 plus yards. Steady hard, treed dog. Has two locates... A triple chop gobble and a long bawl, have heard both. She is not perfect but I like the Mandy II gyp the best of all the dogs I have owned. She was a natural.Would like to get one more breeding from her. Still looking for her replacement. Females are hard to come by in this line. Seems to produce more males then females. These dogs would be more in the publics eye if I lived in an area that had more hunts. Closest hunt is one hour and no PKC hunts. After reading this I seem to have forgotten to mention the third generation off Mandy II. I bred to '' The Coon Buster" a pup directly off Sandy Creek Jake and a Nt Ch gyp that was Rusty Red bred. I own Coon Bustin Mandy. She is not like her mom but is a pretty good coon dog with a 2nd place win. She is loud and can drive a track and a good tree dog when she has the confidence. Faults...Has big ears. By that I mean if she is treed and not sure and another dog is treed she will pull. Her brother is in Maine and is more like Mandy II. He has a 1st place in limited Nite hunts. Also own a female off Mandy II and Jon Jr. A sister of Jon Henry bred to a son of Jon Henry. She is coming along nicely. Loud piercing chop, quick strike and independent. Working on her this season and hope she can fill her moms spot in my kennel. Good luck to all, thanks for reading . Lucas
Crazy Luke who owns the male in Maine ?
