-- quit smoking. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928372377)
I smoked for 33 yrs, last 20 yrs 1 - 2 packs a day and quit many times but never more than a week to a month. I tried the gum, couldn't stand it. The patch gave me lucid dreams, some were REALLY good, some were REALLY bad. I tried the Chantax pill, nothing worked.
A week before last Christmas I decided I was going to quit, no medical junk this time, just putt'em down and got it in my head I was quitting, come to find out every time I wanted to quit in the past, I really wasn't wanting to quit. I haven't had one in going on 3 months, feel much better, got more coin in the pocket and don't smell bad.
I wish you the best luck on your decision, wish I could say it gets better and the cravings go away, I mean they did and have but there are times I sit down to take a break and still find myself reaching for my pack, then the craving will start a little and I get figidity , but I have truely quit this time, and hope you have as well, the positives out way the negs 100 %. I was lucky or I should say my wife was as I didn't have real bad mood swings, keep a up beat attitude, smile alot.
My wife still smokes, because of those mood swings and it doesn't bother me at all that she does or does it in front of me. It's just those occasions when I sit to listen to a hound or take a break.
There are several additions to over come, social, physical, physiological and oral. And not to forget habit, that was a big one for me, stop to take a break, have a cold one, take off in my truck, coffee, dinner etc. Cigs are without a doubt the most addictive thing on the plant that I have found or used, heck I enjoyed them, and looked forward to having one, but if you want to truly quit you will.
Hang in there stay strong, and work out a little or you will gain some weight cause every time I want one, I just eat, lucky for me my metabolism is threw the roof, and I have a bottomless pit for a gut, I like food, food is good, and I give that rocking chair hell when I really want one.

kardinal, congratulations on your success at quiting smoking. I know it was tough but you did it. I find it amazing that even today young people are still starting to smoke as if no one has ever said it was bad. I live in a marine town and most of the marines smoke. They are so brave to face lung cancer. Of course, they are living the courage of their ignorance.

Thanks croatankid, yep I am with you don't understand these younger people. It was a little different when I was young, everyone in the family smoked or dipped, and some even found it cute to see myself or brother do it as well. Oh course we thought it was cool as well. Had to have some candy cigs to be like dad or who ever was cool at the time and as I grew into a man heck I have been known to light one off another in some crazy moment of stupidity.
I mainly quit because of my boys, sort of a flip of the coin, as to my childhood. I started late in life making a family, guess I needed to get all the wild out of me before I put something else 1st instead of myself. I see myself in them very much so they are certainly cut from the same cloth. I guess I needed to show them there opinion meant something as they ask me to quit, they are young and more educated on the dangers of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes than I or my parents were as they were just kids when I was born. I also wanted to show them how important it is to follow threw with something when you commit. I do try and hope that maybe one day they will lead, and perhaps I will follow, or perhaps it's already that way now
marpal I don't think there is a difference in the difficulty, heck I chew for yrs heavy and smoked occasionally then that flipped as it was more sociable or attractive to smoke and I got my nicotine fix much faster. None of it is easier, its nicotine that we get addicted to and it is the most addictive substance on the planet in my opinion. Your grand pa just showed you what I showed my kids. I never felt weak, pain, or lazy, if anything I was more wired, and I am wired 440 as is. If I sleep 6 hrs I am doing good if I get 8 I am sick more than that I am dead. Again I am going on 3 months and still dealing with the urge to have one, not happening brother, not me, I am done with'em. Best of luck to ya if you decide to throw the dip down, just don't pick up something else like a cigarettes, only way to quit is get it in your head, think positive, and stay the course brother just like old Pappy.
I didn't realize how old this post was when it started, I just respond as it was something that I was in the process of then I read all of it. Hope all that did or tried succeded with there goal.
PAPPY OUT

marpal, quit dipping, because you must. it doesn't matter how hard it is because you must and you can. cancer of the mouth, tounge, throte, is far worse than any amount of effort to quit. just because it is hard is no reason to delay quitting.
