-- Best coon bait for live traps? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928371923)

Last coon I caught was on cherry pie filling. Bought a cheap can and put a couple spoon fulls on a piece of bread. Still have plenty left for several resets.

bait

yu can catch coon on just about anything. when I was a teenager I used to trap coons and fox to make a little extra money and did fairly decent the biggest thing Is location like somebody else mentioned yu gotta set the trap where coon are there naturally curious enough to check out anything that stands out like eggs marshmellows bread foil anything. I use sardines or jack mackerel most time and have good luck with it but yu will catch possums and cats if yu set in some areas I set mine on small creeks and the chances of a coon comin along before a possum are good. just my 2 cents worth

I better have a pocket full of honey buns. I don't think I could make it to my trap location with just one, and have any bait left.

Depends on the time of year...in the warm months I like to use watermelon or cantaloupe. They will risk anything to get at it. When it is freezing outside I think Oreo cookies work best. All of the above baits have a little drawback...they usually have to be changed or freshened up every day. All will work year around but the Oreo's draw ants terrible in the warm months and the fruit can and will freeze if it's cold enough.
As the one fella posted earlier, trap location is very important. One other tip I just learned this year...if you use a larger trap like the ones they sell at Tractor Supply you will sometimes catch two at a time.
