I hunted with Leon one night, and when I pulled my dog out of the box, Leon had Smoke on the leash next to my truck, and my dog looked like a large beagle compared to him! My dog when in good hunting shape is 75#, he's probably close to 85# now, though! If I'm not mistaken, The Red Headed Stranger is about a 90# dog. He's a full brother to Smoke! Another thing about Gunsmoke, to me, he was one of the most impressive looking hounds I ever laid my eyes on!

My brother had a Buck Creek male that would go 95 to 100 lbs when he was hunted up. But recently the biggest one I've seen is Buck Creek Midnight Ghost.

Honestly if you are true breeder of our most famous breed you should try to breed by our standards. Height of 27 and 25 for females. No wonder our breed as slipped over the last few years .Maybe some need to be registered as bloodhounds .I'm not a bench type should person but just a hunter at heart that appreciates a hound that can carry it's wieght in a athletic way that our standard stats.

I can understand that but some of the old walkers were big as all get out.

Randy G Hall,

I didn't try to breed for the size of dogs that I have, it's what I ended up with. So I'm not sure exactly what my options would of been. All I can say is bring your light and boots. You'll see size, volume, and dogs that can carry their weight. Dozer is a first tree dog probably 95% of the time. I under stand what your saying about the breed standards but some times Mother Nature takes over and you just have to deal with it. I wouldn't trade the ones I have for anything.
