removing a broom finish on concrete

It can be done with some time and patience. Most rental centers have a machine that has segmented grinding stones that are mounted in a machine simular to a floor buffer. With a supply of water hose to the machine you can smooth the brushed finish off and end up with a real nice smooth finish on the concrete pad. Just make sure the segments in the machine aren't the real coarse ones and it will work fine!! After floor is done, and dry,just apply a good sealer and your good to go!

I have 3" of slope in 18' on my kennels and it's still not enough. In the winter time when I clean my kennels with water hose or pressure washer the water does not run off fast enough and it becomes a sheet of ice. Like someone else said it seems like you don't ever put enough slope, I thought I had plenty but its not. You can't go by the standard slope that they put on driveways or sidewalks. When it gets cold in Indiana you need the water to run off pretty quick.

I pour concrete for a living and I tell people 2 things: If you have any thought that you will tear down the dog pen in the future and build a building on it, leave it flat and use high pressure nozzle to clean it. If you want slope to run water off then put 5% slope on it( 10'=5" 12'=6" 14'=7" etc.) the old 1/4" to the foot is just for driveways and sidewalks and water wont run unless you have a lot of pitch. Another thing I do is a light trial finish on the floor. not hard trowel slick but just enough to be smooth, As far as filling in the broom finish the best you can do would be the epoxy floor coverings, they come in several colors or clear but they will make your floor smoother.

From my past deals

From what I see in the picture,you have things going for you, I see from the shadows in the pic that hounds will have a certain degree of sunlight. That's good for a couple reasons,hounds need it and it helps dry up the kennel after wash down and in doing so keeps the kennels you set up from rusting from all the moisture left after you clean up. Just one question for you, is the walkway going to be along the building or are you planning on inside boxes for hounds to sleep in thier box! If the walkway is along the building,that's the best setup as far as cleaning goes when the time comes. When I did my last kennel, that's the way I had it done. There's two slopes in the concrete you have to be concernd about and the main one is front to back where you plan to have the water run off at, the other is in the lenght on the slab your going to pour and it sounds like you want to have a gutter system for the waste to run off at one end of the slab or the other. If that's the case, a standard slope will get that job done without much of a problem. 2" fall over 30 foot long will do!When I did mine,I eliminated having a gutter poured when the concrete was done and instead,which is much cheaper and works great it to buy 10" sewer pipe and split it down the middle buy sawing it with a hand power saw,join the sections together and then drill and tapcon it to the slab,easy and works very well and by the looks of things,front to back of your slabs slope,do yourself a big favor and go with 8" and you will be glad you did at the end! As far as having pee barriers between your kennels, the best thing is to use aluminum sheet material from a fab shop,2 foot tall and drill a few holes in it and fasten to the kennel panels. Forget about a block wall,not needed and just adds weight to the slab and causes more stress and cracking! Lookin good,Danny G.

Yes I would seal it for sure, it will make clean up easier and keep stuff from penetrating into your concrete. Use a high solids acrylic sealer or even better there is an epoxy floor covering you can get they sell one at Lowes or Homo depot that I have heard work well but I get one from my concrete supply place thats awesome. Its called SUPERCOAT you can look it up at www.SUPERCOAT.us, it comes in colored or clear. I put it down in a local vets kennels and it works good, I usually do the colored then go over it with the clear but you can do either or.

Just a thought is all

From what I see in your pic,you might as well have the boxes on the outside of the kennel. With all the space in that huge building, the only advantage your hounds would have is due to weather and the wind chill factor which with a good box for them to sleep and good bedding would not make much of a difference to thier comfort level when it got real cold. Let me say this,when you start to clean out those kennels with water, that moisture is going to effect things that it can attack and that painted siding you have on that super nice building is where it will start it's job!Trust me,I've been thru it! Just letting you know that if I were you,I would not put the boxes on the inside of the building, I would put the boxes within the kennel space itself and have my walkway along the building so I could walk down the along the building and wash the waste away from the building instead of towards it and in doing so, you wash the waste into the gutter and away from the kennel itself! Now you can do as you please,I've been down the road and know what's the right way! JMO! Looks like it will be nice when done,show us a picture whe completed if you would!! Danny G.
