I'm building a above ground kennel , 10 by 18 foot which when I get through with it it will be three 6 by 10 foot areas. It's going too have metal roof , front and back closed in.
With 1in by 3in oak strips for the floor , with 1 1/4 spacing.

If you're on a budget or just feel cheap, instead of using 5?4 decking board, consider using treated privacy planks. they are not as strong, of course, as 5/4 but they are strong enough to hold a dog and a person is need be. Often times you can find used fencing planks on craigs list and else where. They're usuing 5 to 6 feet long and work well for flooring.

I've had both and prefer a above ground over concrete. The main reason is urine on concrete makes for a foul Oder. The deck board kennel doesn't stink no where near as bad.

Does anybody have dog yards? I have three runs approximately 60 feet by 15 feet. My dogs get plenty of exercise and get to lay in the soft grass.

Build your pen long and narrow. They will run.

I still have memories of raising pigs on elevated platforms. I visited a guy one time who had his dogs on platforms. The dog setup wasn't much different. Hold your nose with one hand, fight the flies away with the other and watch where you step. I suppose if a person cleaned them every day, then it might be ok, but otherwise, its a stinkin', fly infested mess.

I'll stick with concrete.

I have had both. I switched 10 years ago to concrete. I like it 10 x better. Easier to keep clean. When I had the elevated platforms if I brought an older dog home they didn't adjust easily. The down side is the concrete cost more.

I was gonna pour concrete for my kennels but instead opted to lay the 12x12 pavers you get at menards. It was $800 cheaper plus if you ever need to move the kennel you can just pull up the pavers. I laid small stone underneath of course and I don't have any issues with urine smell or anything. As long as you get them level it's a breeze to clean with a shovel.

A lot better than having them on dirt which is where they were at before. No more digging and no more muddy mess of a kennel

Above Ground for me. So much easier to keep clean and keeps the dogs out of the mud for them to get diseases and stuff like that. Keep lime down to keep the smell down.

Of course I invested in mine to last for longer than 5 years so it cost me an arm and a leg thats for sure. But I think it keeps them healthier than a ground kennel cause I have mine where the poop just falls through. Slates about an 1 1/4 inch apart. And the dogs are at my level so I have full control of them.

using those pavers is a great idea especially for younger folks. they move a lot and are subject to other changes. these allow them to reuse the pavers or sell them.
