neither

a socially dysfunctional retard

independent to a fault

a LONER

Many, many times that ol dog that cruises on in yonder is looking for his KIND of coon as well as getting away. Lots of those tree coon up little trees for a reason. Ol Handy treed a den where you cut him and LONER has the bacon up a bush. I will agree that they aren't a lot of fun to hunt with company, but they can and will win a lot of hunts.

just my opinion

don't crucify me for saying this, but a lot of bluetick guys want one to bellow and snort and tree an ol cold coon right in front of them when if they would pick their heads up and fire a little harder, they could tree a lot of coon a LOT quicker....only an observation and opinion

I like a dog that can take an older track and cut and drift it to the right tree in a hurry, but lets face it, those aren't as common in a blue color as the ones that beat and bang tracks that are too cold to fool with to start with.

Style

I am convinced this will be debated until the day I die. lol Good luck to each at finding what you like. Lance

I want to hunt coon dogs that do the same thing whether they are turned loose alone or with company. That is what I call independant.

i guess we all think a little different.
dead loner-always aloan one way or another.
loaner-likes to get aloan
independent-will do there own thing on track n tree without worring about what another dog is doing.

Posted by patches9452 on 03-04-2014 12:10 AM:

What Richie described to me is what I call a loner. What I call I independent is a dog that finishes what it starts instead of taking off to another dog or if a dog trees slick going on and finishing the track right. Nothing wrong with either I just prefer the one I call independent

Loner

Loner to me is a dog cut with dogs that do their own thing not running into a dog struck or treed backing it. I don't want a pack dog. Mine will be alone unless backed. Cut em to dogs treed or struck and they go their own way. Not a lot of fun buddy hunting but if I want to visit I can do that at the club. Does that make mine a cull maybe but if you boys got any like that send em to me before ya shoot em.

I have a habit of selling dogs like that....cheap, because I don't like to hunt that way. They weren't of any use to anyone when I lived out west, but people out this way seem to like 'em.

I've had a few that would beat and bang a cold track sometimes, some were fun anyway...some were just plain ole frustrating.

My question is how many of these dead loners everyone talks about is truly natural or man made?? I'd say very few is natural and if ya had to make it you ain't gonna get natural in your offspring JMO

My hunting buddy's dog is struck or even treed nearby and I unload mine and fire them in the opposite direction and KNOW that I don't have to worry about them looping around and covering that dog on track or tree

Is that dog a loner or just independent?

How many of you have dogs that you can do that with?

Let's say you lead off a tree and there is a dog treed on in the woods deeper. If you cut yours, will they go and back that dog?

Is a dog that refuses to go back that treed dog a loner or just independent?

I would HONESTLY like to know if most people consider this type
independence to be undesirable

I have had them, have one now and I enjoy them even pleasure hunting for the most part, I ain't scared of the dark

I guess some don't know the feeling of walking to their dog treed by himself, hunt is over and if you have a coon you win, and you and the rest of the cast knows the dog has the coon. real sweet feeling.

it just amazes me some folks knocks these dogs yet hunt what ive personally witnessed they hunt

I personally have no problem with a independent dog I hunt one BUT a dead loner I believe IMO is a recipe for disaster by that I mean that if they are constantly alone their missing out on a lot of coon grant it I believe in splitting and having the meat but at some point and time you have to be with and get in on the others coon to,if ya don't your gonna lose way more than ya win JMO

Tom,
I agree!

unless you are hunting buckets, 2 coons is going to win the vast majority of casts down my way, so not sure about all that, will this style win autumn oaks no, but it will win the world hunt an get you in many final fours in pkc

I respectfully disagree with that thought process but saying that I can not speak for your country although I do hunt and have thin coon population and that dead loner won't cut it here, your are right that type won't win Autumn Oaks nor do I believe that type will win the world or 90% of the hunts JMO

LoL don't really matter not worth the argument but as far as the way you worded it to Pkc cast well that means even less to me ya can win by being in the - or not doing anything in that game. But Good hunting to you.

Natural

My Sally female is natural have not beat or shocked her to make her tree alone. Will stay with any dog unless they run her off a tree. As far as not winning many cast or the big hunts well her record speaks for itself. Most don't like em because they ain't ever had one and the ones that have won't sell em. To each his own I ain't tryin to sell the loner to no one.
