Whats the idea behind the toe nails? For example the knowledge knot is said to be how smart a pup is. Ive just never heard of it, but that does sound interesting.

I have had very good luck at picking the runt or keeping the one nobody wants. I have had 2 very exceptional hounds in my life, & picked the female out because she was the runt & the other one was a male that nobody else wanted till it was about a yr old then everybody wanted him lol

I'd NEVER......

pick another pup with yellow/light colored eyes. Everyone I had like that was nutty.

That's about as close as you can get to picking the best pup out of a litter. And I'm glad most people ignore this advice.

i dont think theres no way of telling or somebody would have figured it out by now lol. read this one time, back hundreds of years ago the man wanting the best pup would put them all together, then he would make a circle aroung the pups with dry grass. he would set the grass a fire ,let the mama dog loose she would then jump the fire to get her pups, the one she picked up first was the keeper.dont know how true it was but i read that in the paper.lol

I like to pick the one that doesn't really care what the others are doing, does their own thing!

Me and ol Kelly Stagner once had a 3hr conversation about picking a pup. we were in the barn with the female and litter and he asked what pup I wanted, each time I picked one he said nope, that's not the one you want :/

the first one was because it was the pup he was keeping.......finaly after half a dozen or more pups, I picked one he approved of :/

then we went in the house and sat at the table and talked forever about "how to pick the best pup"

1) always pick the tri colored if there is one in the litter
2) if not the darkest redtick with black mouth, toenails, lips, nose and pads.
(this was supposed to make them smarter and less apt to be lame from sore feet)
3) more spots the better, never a blanket back.
4)put the whole litter on the floor and the first one to wander off by itself.
5) take them away when tiny (a week or 2 old) and see what pup the bitch puts back in the box first.

I stuck with 2 and 4........the rest I ignored after a few years. I don't know as any helped, but jeeze ya gotta pick somehow

The only runt ive had was out of a litter of beagles and is the best beagle ive had.

I coonhunted with my gpa for years and hadnt done it for a while and 2years ago went to buy a redbone pup my wife told me she wanted to pick which one so i said go ahead turned out to be best dog ive owned haha i think i will let her pick from now on. By the way i asked her why she picked that pup and she said because he was the cutest haha.

My dad always flip them on their back craddled in his arm and most go crazy but he wouldnt take a pup unless one would lay calm. He always said if the pup aint willing to trust me im not willing to trust it. He usually ended up with pretty good dogs.

count the hairs under chin, I forgot what one hair stood for, but two hairs will never do and tree hairs it will tree four hairs four sure. this is what an old man told me once. personally I pick the ugliest or the runt of the litter and go from there.

That seems to be what I end up having to do.. If I'm picking for myself I never pick the best coondog of the litter

I've always been told
1) Black roof of mouth
2) Knot on head
3) Blaze the full length of the head
4) If its a walker it should have a red head

2,3, and 4 I have already proven wrong with the walker pup I have now. He has all 3 and still ain't worth what I paid for him

Have you had a bunch of barn burners using this method that you have been keeping a secret from us?

Posted by jawgaboy on 03-14-2014 11:27 PM:

My dad always told me to close my eyes and reach in there and pick one and no matter how ugly of a dog it was keep it but when i started paying $300-$500 for a pup i stopped doing that haha!
