Kody makes a very good point... there's no one answer. Some dogs have a thick head, and you can't discipline them unless you get their attention. Some dogs are sensitive, and a harsh word is enough.
Sometimes the dog got legitimately snookered... a tree leaning out into a river, a tree leaning into another tree where the coon crossed, and then came down. etc.
If they slick and its obvious they didn't check it, then send them on. If they do it repeatedly, discipline them by whatever means is appropriate for them.
Here are the musts... Know you're dog and know what they're doing and respond accordingly. Taking someone else's advice on what they do with their dog, under their circumstances, is a recipe for disaster.
