i like a good red english dog cause it was my first and it was gave too me that dog was part human i beleive he was alittle touchy but at the end of the day he got the job done. i kind of don't blame him i get alittle grouchy working hard too sometimes.
but there is some walker dogs that have that kind of spirit but some that will hunt around you and some thatll burn it up all well i guess its all in what your wanting to hunt. like he said a walker if you aggravate him he'll run just about anything and end up treed with something sometimes and thats great if you want some excitement but i find as i get older i'm not that out to walk behind one around here. mayb if its flat i will like to here them drift thru the timber. my dad has a plott and i think there more spirited than a walker dog is and a english or whatever they'll get the job done if they want too if not he'll stay at the truck or burn the woods up or just hunt around alitte you never know. i still like some excitement but changes from time to time kind of like hunting close then sometimes hunt deep. gotta be diversified. lol

If you look at pictures of the world champions thru the years there are a lot of walkers there. Growing up I remember most around here hunted redbones but dad had a couple real good males and about every pup was from them
dog. As the 70's was ending and rolling into to the 80's the tide started really going towards walkers. Back then I read the cooner until the ink was worn on the pages. I would talk about the walkers and dad swore we would never feed one but we eventually did.
I would agree that walkers have dominated the scene for the last 30 years without question. That will change with time because most breeds don't want to single register because they are concerned about purity of bloodlines and the DNA as ended the behind the wood pile breeding.
I doubt we see a cross bred breed so I can see the English breed making major improvements because the will allow about anything to be registered.
I have messed with about every breed out there and have seen nice bounds in all but just prefer to have walkers. I will joke around about the better breed but I just love to see a good hound in action.

All dogs are different. The worst babbler I hunted against was not a walker. The best dog I ever hunted against was a black in tan.She was quick in all departments but I still got the win
I would've liked to seen her hunt by herself.
The worst thing I've seen in the walker breed is the tendency to pull to the first tree that a coon taps, not saying all do this but that's the biggest fault I've seen in the breed. They're bred to do this really, it makes for higher scores if they get first tree and get lucky and the coon is there. My blue dog may not get treed first but I like that she takes the time to check herself before she locks down. For me its not all about the comp wins anyway. Maybe that's cuz I haven't won yet lol.
walkers
Do out number all breeds in the hunts!I live and breath blueticks but I'm not color blind I just like to see good hound work period! At oaks walkers out numbered everything like 20 to 1 all 4 nights I hunted I drew all walkers and 1 black dog 2 nights no winners 1 I won my cast with 75+ and 1 a walker won with 225+ should have been - he struck my dog but it happens guides are everything in them big hunts we only seen 5 coon all weekend.I'm not scared of any walker with my female she is just as fast and independent as they are and when she parks her butt she normally has the meat! But can't argue walkers rule completion hunt off breeds are always trying to get in front.

I wasn't trying to say there aren't slick treeing dogs in other breeds, my brother had an English a few years ago before we switched to blue dogs, he was a coondog by every definition but on long old tracks it was like he'd just get tired of trailing and pull treed. We always made sure we had an independent dog with him to make sure the track actually got finished.

I'm very partial to an English dog, that's what I like to lead when I can. With that being said I have owned my fair share of walker dogs! They are 10-1 more walkers than anything else I'm sure, I like some lines , some I don't , but I guarantee you if you set down and write a list of the things you want in a dog, then gather up the cash and go try dogs around the country , you will find that list of desired traits in a walker dog before you will anything else!!!
