As I said in a earlier post the female may do this because she is craving elements such as CALCIUM, PHOSPHROUS,IRON. and possible one or more other elements which she depleated from her system , while developing the pups and then producing, or trying to produce enough milk to feed them. The only way she can satisfy this craving is through the bones of the puppies. Very few or possibly NO dog feed supplies enough of these elements for some females. This is why I said a good feed supplement might solve this problem.

John Itterly - got your PM. Yes this is Dolly. Her 2nd litter off Wipeout Speck are doing awesome. This was her 3rd time being bred and it was a hound in NJ named Harley. He doesn't have fancy paperwork but for sure is a coondog. She was at Ronnie Clines this summer and we just got her back a few weeks ago. Ron won a few hunts with her. Dolly for sure has lost her mind on this breeding.

This is very hard to deal with

I have whelped and raised many liiters of pups here at the kennel and have never had this happen within a whole litter. Maybe I'm a bit on the lucky side. As far as the female knowing or sensing something wrong with the pups before they are born I don't know if that is the case, I guess my question would be is were the pups alive as she was having them from the start within her. Maybe it has been mentioned. One thing I have found is that if a pup gets always pushed away and off to the side from the start, it's been because the pups body temp has gotten chilled to the point where she knows it by the touching of her nose on the pup. Wants the pups body temp gets down to that point, she will neglect it and at times eat that certain pup but not the others. Pups when born can loose body temp quicker than one might think in hot or cold weather. I have seen them try to eat thier last pup if it has been born dead. Seen it hear 2 times over the years and of course I know you can not always be around them when they are having them but in 2 cases I have seen it,I was there and stopped it from happening. In both cases,it had been several hours before that last pup was born and alot of cases, the pup suficates within the bitch before arriving,body temp drops and therefore she knows it! The times I've seen it,I tried to revive the pup but it was already dead.When I did a research on this, it mostly occurs with Maiden females,which is first time whelping because they don't recognize the pups as thier offspring. Therefore after already having two litters she isn't considered a maidin bitch unless c sections were done both times before this litter which dosn't seem to be the case,at least not mentioned as such. Know one seems to know the true answer even in the vet world. Considering the maiden part, maybe her hormones were out of wack, hard to say! As far as the point of not enough certain vitamins and such. No true science behind it so with myself, the bitch is always on pet tabs plus from the day she comes into heat and till after the pups have been weaned just to be on the safe side. A top of the line food is a must have for me. Sorry to hear about your bad deal! I'ld give her another shot at raising another litter if she was mine! Sounds like a good one!Good ones are hard to find! If she has raised top pups before, keep her around!! Main point and ?. Were the pups truly alive as they were being whelped and coming from the birth canal? JMO!! Danny G.

MR G, that is a lot of good info in your post, the gyp really should be bred again as she may never eat another pup.mother nature works in strange ways sometimes.

had a female one time that was having pups pick up 2 pups and check them that afternoon they was gone she eat them ,pick up another pup and check it the next morning it was gone ,never did touch another one of her pups till they was 4 weeks old and she raised 5 healthy pups.

I've heard

I heard about a bitch that ate 1 pup out of the first litter. They feed her LIVER prior to the next litters ( how much or for how many days I don't know) but she didn't eat pups anymore and she's had 2 more litters. Low on Iron I expect.

Had several that did this over the years now I give them iron while they are with pups haven't had it happen in 15 years now no matter what no one tells you it is a lack of iron an old vet told me this many years ago and he was right you can give them supplements with iron in it.
