Pete - I too remember those days. And you're right maybe it's like watching a train wreck... you don't want to, but you can't seem to take your eye's off of it!
The one difference though, is that soap operas never fueled a fire for PETA or other organizations to wipe an entire sport from existence. That's what got me upset about these episodes, otherwise you're right... we can always just stop watching. On this one though, just becasue we stop, doesn't mean that the HSUS will.

I would love for Rich to call me a poacher, and throw me out of HIS valley LOL. I would however prefer he didnt do it on national television, I wouldnt want that many witnesses.
Everyone is a cat killer, or poacher in his mind. The feller that gave him the lion claw on his hat must have had hounds that crossed water, and didnt get run off by a little ol'bobcat.
I wonder if he took the claw from a poacher then run the sum ----- out of his country LOL.
I wounder if the history channel thought Riches ol'truck Wilber would put folks in mind of the one Disney used for the ol'boy on fox and the hound.
Hate The show
Anybody see the show sun night?
Rich lost his horse and the dim-whit in Idaho lost a muskrat and a beaver he was too lazy to skin when he got back to camp.
They are about to lose me...
Why would you go to find a runaway horse on foot?Idiot
We all watch this show and think.. How big of a jackass can this guy be... But for those people who don't know ANYTHING about the outdoors, hunting, dogs etc..
How many of the anti's think you just sit in a truck and wait for the dogs to tree then walk in and shoot the game? Out here, that is what they all think.. This guy is showing he is busting his ass to find dogs, follow dogs etc.. And not shooting anything... Yes I think it is stupid, but for those who don't know, maybe they are thinking its not as easy as they thought..
It shows a guy who generally cares about his dogs- isn't nonchalant about his dogs getting tore up by a bobcat- and let's face it, my dogs catch a cat on the ground, it is going to be a big mess in which I shove some cephalexin down their throat and go hunting the next day.. People who don't know any better would probably be appalled by that..
And when that idiot pup was running around chasing chickens, I was thinking TRITRONICS! But how good would that have looked on TV for him to light that pup
up..
The whole poaching thing, yes, Rich should be knocked out for that stuff being on TV.
So summing it up.. I think the guy is ridiculous, but I don't think he is portraying to those who don't know any better, a terrible picture.. And they sure don't show wolves in a positive light which is a huge plus..

Very, very well said Melanie.
Gonna buy a coon dog so im not home to watch this show, Mel you make some very good points.
But Melanie... how many antis are going to think better of us, simply because they see all of Rich's hardwork versus the anti propoganda this show feeds by showing and talking about the death of dogs and brutal damage to man's best friend???
Is it a reality, yes, but does it need to be shown and dramatized, no!
There is likely a less attractive side to every sport, and a sure fire way to put that sport in jeopardy is to dramatize and televise that aspect. My moto in business and in life, is... "don't air your dirty laundry!"
I do agree that these episodes are more for the non-hunter, so why not show some successes??? It is apparently not because of some gruesome scene around the tree, because they have managed to show all the gruesome aspects of the sport. So what is the layman, left with??? All the gruesome for apparnently no good reason. I'm not a layman, but that's how I would interpret it.
Just another perspective...

And maybe that is true also with the show..
It hard I think to take a step back and watch it from the view of someone who knows nothing about hunting with dogs... I'm trying to see if from that perspective, of knowing nothing..
We won't change the anti's minds no matter what.. I'm trying to look at it as if I was going into it with no prejudice against the sport...
It would be nice to see more success.. Doesn't have to be actually killing a cat, but it would be nice to see more trees..

I believe some treed cats with releases would make it more interesting to the general public and show a bit more positive side to old Rich and all his effort.I was a bit dissapointed though for all his preaching about ethics that it was ok for him to crank off several shots at a deer running wide open.Ive been preaching to my kids for years to only take the shots that ensure a good hit.You know my kids Dave, thats not been easy to get Austyn to abide by.

I hear you Dan! I thought the same thing when I saw that epsiode... Not only did he crank off several rounds, but he seemingly knew immediately that none of them hit their mark, as he didn't even go look for a blood trail.
Even my 5 year old asked, "Daddy why was he shooting so much at that deer?"

I know Rich a little bit as we bought a mule from him about 7 years ago.
He was in the middle of recovering from an "accident", so he wasn't hunting and going to be using the pack mule. His ex-wife (wife then) shot him, then ran him over with the truck. She was in the mental joint at that time and he'd taken up with another gal.
I haven't seen the show, but have heard about it. I refer to Rich as a "feral cat". He's a goofy SOB. I can only imagine his ridiculous antics and am not surprised to hear that he has not impressed you guys much.
I mean its all for the show bout not using garmin and stuff, but I give him major respect for giving hound hunting a good name . I feel bad for even making fun of him now lol. atleast he represents houndsmen in a good way .

Been watching Mountain Men for awhile now.I know a lot of it is fake but enjoy watching the hounds and the old man Tom who traps and makes stuff.Anybody guess what kind of hounds Rich uses on them mountain lion?Kinda look like House bred dogs to me.Shame they don't let him talk about his hounds.
yea,i like them old shows or i wouldnt watch them.i like tom the best.they are just like most of the shows like that, you can see the holes in them if you have been around it yourself.i cant handle the duck caller show ,a good true houndsman it probly wouldnt hurt him to get a little shock treatment every now and then.
It's hard to hunt hounds and ask yourself why he never pulls the garmin out or has fits of rage when his dogs act plain dumb. My wife can't understand why I watch it and complain but watch it every week. Eustace amazes me the most. The things he does. And the OL grey horse he uses could stand a little feed.
All in all I like the show just to see what dumb thing is going to happen next. I enjoy a good laugh thinking do people really believe this stuff. The colt hanging his foot the other night amazed me that they showed that

It's a simple reason he don't pull his garmin out ......
He pre trays the sport as more then looking at his garmin and standing around . He try's to show people it's not easy and it's hard work. I mean the things he does on tv gives hound hunters a good name he likes his dogs and he doesn't kill everything he trees. Pretty fair and gives anti people no fuel for there fire .

I completely agree with Bigridge.
Rich Lewis sets a good example of hound hunters who run their dogs on big game. When we see him, he's always hiking after his dogs despite rough terrain or weather. He's always talking about how much he loves his dogs. And as stated before, I don't think since the show has been running, have we seen him kill a single lion his hounds have treed. Overall, he has been a good face to represent what hunting with hounds is, and this is an image we need the public to see more than ever.
By the way, I happen to like the fact that he doesn't sit there and fool with a garmin handheld the entire time, or even a telemetry antenna for that matter.
Exactly .

Old Rich got run over by his truck and he still loves it ,that shows he has a big heart.and we have these garmin kings that its like hunting by your self if there along and they give that garmin a break while their texting mama .Im just joking around but rich looks like a tuff old mountain man for sure.
"made for tv"
I agree with Mr. Kirschner- I think it is a sad portrayal of houndsman and the mountain way of life. Rich runs cattle and has a new four wheel drive truck also, so I don't think he is just eeking out a living running lions for other ranchers. The foolishness of it all is borderline comedy-The best part of it is when I am tired and beat up from a long day at work, it makes me get my light, boots, leash and a couple of Black & Tans that aren't afraid to cross water and go see some real hound work. Here's to all the real houndsman out there, with real hounds, and real passion, real respect for the game they hunt and the hounds they own and love. THAT my friends is REALITY!!
