It hurts nothing at all to know who the judges are up front, Miss Bev is right, as bad as we hate admit it, there are some judges, that when having to pick one breed over another, their favorite will most likely win. But that doesn't happen often, and for the most part, I have seen some very very good shows at the larger events, and the choices the Judges had to make was not easy ones.

Reply about a dog that can't hunt isn't worth the cost of a trophy--just your oppinion--we've done both, harder to teach a dog to bench then hunt. You can laugh all you want. For most hounds--Plotts in general, have a natural instinct for hunting, being put on a bench and gaiting around is not a normal function for these dogs. Takes hours of training and constant refreshers. We had redbones that could hunt like nobody's business but put them on a bench--no way. Just my opinionof course of which I am entitled to.
Ha ha right on with the Plotts! Mine comes from big time bear hunting lines from FL and she wants nothing to do with benching!

well let me say one thing.. for the show ive won and ive lost,, its only what the judge likes that day.. and for the one that thinks a dog cant hunt and show then get your truck hunts.. gased up and come on ill show you mine and have several friends that will show you theres then tell us that a show dog want tree a coon.. its a job to get both sides in them and lots of work,, for the judges in the hunts you would be susprised if you really knew how many hunters had guides and judges set up at the hunts.. as i said i do both hunt and show..

I am going to be extremely blunt.
People that do not show have absolutely no clue what goes on at some shows.
I have held a license since the early 1980's .The MAIN reason I got one was I was disgusted with what I saw going on at the local shows.
There are some judges I absolutely refuse to show under because they are idiots and should not even have a licence to judge a show.
There are clubs I will not show at because it is the good ole boys clic that wins every show.
How about the you pick my dog I'll pick yours next time?
Or they always pick their hunting buddies dogs.
OR .. Oh, I like to pick the kids to keep them interested.Or I couldn't help not pick that cute little girls dog.(Yes I heard these very statements personally)Hey , I paid my fees too and pick the best dog buddy.
There is so much politics at all levels is is disgusting.
One year at AO I was ready to puke over the judges picks.EVERY DOG HE PICKED HAD HIND LEGS THAT WERE POST LEGGED.No angulation at all.I am not exaggerating.
Another Year at AO I was approached by two different long time exhibitors and known winners after losing a very close contest between my dog and another well known AO contestant.
They separately said to me almost identical statements. You got a nice dog but do you know what was wrong/why you lost My reply was tell me.Both told me it was the handler.Oh,What did I do wrong? Reply , YOU DID NOT DO ANY THING WRONG.THE DOG DID NOT HAVE THE RIGHT HANDLER,in other words a well known exhibitor showing her.
Another year at AO ,A dog won NGR of breed that I had judged more than once.As per its breed standards ,that breed is to have an arched back over the loin area with stressing that as an important part of that particular breed standard. The judge that year also had a part in the breeding of that dog in its parentage .That dog was actually flat backed .To me a major flaw in its correctness in meeting its particular standard.
I saw another dog At AO win NGR of Breed that was over height standard. The judge never put the tape to the dog.Later my friend asked him in private about it.He replied that if the dog had made it that far he figured the dogs height was Okay.WRONG!!
Come on people. We are talking about national level judging.
YOU hear the same old garbage that you are asking that judges opinion of your dog.I DISAGREE. Why?
Because like the judge at AO he liked those post legged dogs.
If I had been showing a dog with better rear angulation I would not have had a chance in H.... of winning even though I did have a dog that was more correct.
Some judges like dogs that are staight in the front although it is incorrect.
Some judges like those flat back dogs when in reality there are varing degrees of each standard what is acceptable.
Quite honestly the dogs that are the best conformed dogs are not those flashy jump out at you saying here I am pick me type dogs.
JUDGES are NOT SUPPOSE TO judge my dog ACCORDING TO WHAT THEY LIKE BUT TO THE BREED STANDARDS!!!!!!
What a judge is really suppose to be judging is how well each dog meets and conforms to its particular breed standards as well as its physical correctness . Not their likes and dislikes.
I am not perfect in dogs I pick and do not profess to be perfect.I do strive to pick what I believe to be the best dog on that particular day irregardless of breed or handlers.
I have been complimented throughout the years numerous times as to my honesty in judging.
For all the above reasons are why I like to know who is judging before I go to a show.

Pat, point taken. But it seems, according to your statement above, that you admit you're not perfect when it comes to picking dogs as a judge. But...... according to your comments; you expect every other judge to be?
I think it fair to say that some are more educated or knowledgeable than others when it comes to judging hounds. And I also truly believe that some of those very same judges you referred to negatively would also say:
"I am not perfect in dogs I pick and do not profess to be perfect. I do strive to pick what I believe to be the best dog on that particular day regardless of breed or handlers."
I guess what I'm trying to say is that too many (not all) good, honest folks are sometimes left with taking a bad rap because of nothing more than "assumptions" made publicly by individuals who don't even know them on a personal level. Does that make sense?
How about instead creating a positive influence and put any expert advice to much needed use by teaching the younger generation with aspirations of judging dogs? Just my thoughts.
AO Show
I would like to say everyones opinion is important. They're are politics in about everything you do and again some folks play for the fun. I've showed and judged as many dogs as anyone that runs the circuit and felt the same way as alot. Its just one person opinion that day no matter how they pick the winner. As for most handlers out there they show a pretty good dog or they wouldn't win everywhere they go. I wouldn't show my dog if I didn't think I could win no matter who the judge is. I would want to beat the best at the game. I judge as if the dog comes to the show ring by itself. YOu can ask all the handlers that i have judged, I think they'll tell you the same thing. If you have a good hound you have a good chance as anyone else does. Thanks good luck to all who goes to the great AUTUMN OAKS.
