Really varies depending on the part of the country and ER vs. regular vet. My vet is worth his weight in gold and I gladly pay the extra $200 when I need for him to come in the middle of the night on top of the, if I remember correctly, $500+/- for a section which includes everything as well as a re-exam of mom and dewclaws on the pups the next day. (I band tails myself.)

The ER vet is probably close to 10x that and they'll give me grief about getting the bitch spayed in the bargain. Well worth it to have an established, trusted relationship with your primary vet.

Very interesting to see these replies....apparently, I live in the wrong state !!! I have never yet had a C-section for much less than $1,000.00, and most of our sections cost a bit more than that !!

In my breed, the normal litter is only from 1 to 3 puppies, so $1,000.00 is a LOT of money to spend, especially if one or more of the puppies are dead.

I have had a good relationship with my local vet for many years; however, about 6 or 7 years ago, I noticed that NONE of the vets (including mine) within a one hour drive were open past 5 pm any more, nor were they open on any weekends or holidays. The only choice was to go to the 'Emergency Clinic', & pay the big fees - or lose the dog & her litter.

I had a long talk about this situation with a couple of vets that I know, & I was told that the young vets & vet techs coming out of vet school simply refused to take a job where they had to work nights, holidays, or weekends. Many of these new graduates had never raised dogs or been around livestock (other than in vet school), and they were looking for jobs with 'banker's hours'. As a result, the older vets were unable to hire anyone to help them with these middle-of-the-night emergencies, so they ended up having to refer after-hours clients to these doggy 'ERs'...

The last C-section that I had done cost me $1,800.00 for 3 puppies. The original estimate that I was given was for less than that, but they claimed they 'ran into some problems' during the section. As my vet said when he saw the ER report that was faxed to him after the surgery, "They've got you over a barrel, & they know it; where else are you going to go for help ?"

Even if I were fortunate enough to need a section during normal business hours, the cost of the section plus all of the additional fees would still run in excess of $800.00...because of this, I have a special charge card that I only use for canine reproductive emergencies...

Josh- it was in oakdale,mn. and it was clearly a yuppie vet! she had 15 pups in her, and 10 are living. my goal wasn't at all to make a bunch of money on this, just wanted a pup off her incase anything happened...and this is a prime example of when things can go real bad lol! But she is now living the good life inside the house with me!

You need to go to Jim Winsor at Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital 651-451-4404... His house is attached to the vet clinic and there is always someone on call.. You don't have to pay those crazy e-vet fees

I am deeply sadden by your sean. The unfortunate has really happened. The fact that your female died of liver fail after the surgery would really make me angry. There must be some legal actions you could pursue against them after since it cost you 4600 bucks and your dog died after surgery.
