My dogs know the difference between day and nite and what they are and are not allowed to do with or without a collar on. None of my dogs do their business in the kennel. They all go out in the yard without a leash or a fence.

Many say you cannot train a coonhound to be a house pet and do both. I have made that assumption a fallacy 4 times over now, working on #5 as we speak!

I got started with war dogs in the 70's. Obedience is the foundation in that and the police dogs I've worked and trained. That has carried over into my coon hounds. I can't stand a dog that won't handle. My dogs lead, load and come when called whether it be at the end of a hunt, across a stream or off a steep face hill I don't want to climb.....and the definitely don't lack drive or hunt!!!!!

I worked side by side with herd dogs for years before i even owned a hound........so maybe that early practice as a trainer held on.......

I have always demanded ABSOLUTE obedience in a dog, i dont care if its a hound, a beagle, a bird dog, or a collie........ABSOLUTE, no questions, no free pass.

in 2005 i caught wind of a nice hound a few hundred miles from me who, though SUPER talented, was an absolute nightmare to handle....to the tune it was almost impossable to even catch the dog at times if he didnt want to be.......one thing that stood out in every report i got ( i was too far away to hunt with him personaly enough to judge for myself) was that EVERY time the hound treed, he had the meet. not most of the time, not the majority of the time, but EVERY time........this 1 common theme came from everyone i talked to who had ever hunted with him, rather they liked him or not..........Super talented, and super hard headed.....

I bought him, and to tell the truth, i even had to wait 2 extra weeks to get him, because he had gotten loose and couldnt be caught for quite awhile

fast forward 6months later, and that dog would fallow you 2 miles back to the truck with 1 command. " Here, stay with me". At AO, with hundreds of people and dogs at the fairgrounds, it was the same, " stay with me" and he heeled like a collie.

he finished to duel grand, was a world hunt finalist in 07, and in all that time, no matter where we were or what was going on, I NEVER used a leash unless i was in an accual cast (rules are a pain sometimes).

he was a better dog for it, and he sure as heck was alot more fun to hunt

Hounds can be trained just like any dog. I trail run with mine, so i work them a lot around other people, horses, dogs, etc. They have to handle correctly on a leash. Also i teach them to listen to a tone on a shock collar...those tones really help.

They run loose here, hunt instinct develops on its own.
When they r proficient at "coonhunting" then I train/civilize them to the way I require.
Nvr. do I compromise my position as ALPHA,from day one until I bury them.
I will not tolarate disobedience.
Hand signals/eye contact /tone all r a way of life for my dogs,
Sure they test me,but like I said I do not compromise my ALPHA position.

Respect goes a long way & makes for easy training.
All dogs r different, all learn at different rates, all respond differently to the same stimuli.
I personally do not use any kind of test to evaluate a prospect. I relay on a dogs personality or lack of a personality, as to the direction I take with it.

yeah , saved me some typing ... except I can't let my run loose except on the weekends or evenings when i'm around .

Dont know about u but I have found dogs that lack personality r below average to say the least. Not worth my time!

Great discussion guys! Glad to hear there are others out there that value obedience training and understand its importance early on.
