Sounds like Batesville did a great job with this event! I hate that I didn't get to make it.

I work at a hotel and let me tell you, they all jack up the prices when something is going on in town! It's not right but usually there is not much you can do about it.

Had a great time

I went to the hunt at Batesville to visit and buy some coon hunting supplies. A wonderful hunt. You guys and gals did a bang up job. Next year will only get better.
I was looking for a pair of coonhunting boots that would go over my leg brace and I'm proud to say that Joe from Bama Supply fixed me up. He went out of his way to make a special pair for me. Thanks, Joe.
Folks may have thought concession prices were high, but I'm sure it cost a good penny to get the contract.
I paid $60.00 dollars for my room because I booked early. Later on the rooms were $80.00, still not too terribly bad.
The folks who put on the hunt did a good job for their first go around. An 885 dog hunt is a darn big event!!!!!!!
Loved every minute of my trip there.

Was down there and had a good time. I do know that most of the vendors I talked to were not happy with all the dust that they had to deal with. I would say they are still cleaning there stuff from all the dust. Saturday when I walked in the building I thought there was a fire from all the dust that was in the air. Had heard people say that the dirt was put in for show dogs and to cut down on noise but whatever it was it was a bad choice, vendors not happy.

I was there all weekend and it seemed to be ok on Friday but on Saturday I had dirt in my teeth when I walked out.

We left Friday so we didn't see the dust. It was sure enuff WET Friday!

I was caught off gaurd about the event this year. However next year I will let hunters camp on My Families land 20 miles south of Batesville for free. Its primitive but its free! Its 52 acres with ponds for fishing.

we had a great time, and never met an unkind person all weekend, form the hotel staff to the folks on the grounds to the clerk at the walmart, everyone seemed glad to have a bunch of coonhunters in their town. It was truly southern hospitality at its best. the prices were high at the concessions but we just didnt buy anything form them after we found out how high they were. i hope they have it there for 20+ years.

WINTER CLASSIC

There were 13 of us that made the trip from PA to MS and not one of us had a complaint. From the motel, to the hospitality of every local we met to UKC's setup - it was GREAT. I loved to see the security on the grounds and the "check in" at the dog barn.

Looking forward to next year - but we've all agreed that we're making it a two day trip next year!! haha

Posted by Cobb Man on 01-31-2013 12:12 AM:

Next year from what i've gathered we will be able to attend both due to date changes on events. Then we can really compare events. Did not make the trip to Miss this year but went to Albany and had a great time and great hunting as we always have. Yes the Sourthern Heritage Hunt was not as big as the Old winter classic but we treed and looked at plenty of coons and had a great time!

Posted by redtide on 02-12-2013 03:07 PM:

We decided to pull our travel trailer (1973 model) to John Kyle State Park. Loved that, was quiet, cooked our own food, etc. The ranger told me many stayed in the cabins which normally do not allow pets, but said they did allow them on the grounds for the event (just not inside the cabins). "Event pricing" for motels is normal, but of course there's a fine line between that and "price gouging". But, some motels did not overcharge (the Holiday Inn did....I thought of staying there but $165 a night???).

I thought that the whole event the city, the facilities, the people, and the hunting were TOP NOTCH and we had a great time.

We already know the dirt floor will be removed next yeart.
The only other suggestion (which came from the locals) is to move it a week later to get past deer season and there would be a whole lot more hunting grounds closer to the site.
