quote:my treeing fiest can tree coons,,my old lab pit mix trees coons when i let him so what point are you maken?? it has to be a hound to tree coons?? im sure a poodle could tree a coon if someone took the time with it

If that were true , you could teach a poodle to tree coon ... locating by scent is not something you can teach ... the first sign you shouldn't be giving advice is when you don't know the difference between what traits a dog needs that are genetic and what behaviors you need to teach ...
Our job is to instill obedience and work ethic , expose them in ways that aren't counterproductive , be consistant in our messages of discipline and so forth ... that dog's ability , nose , tracking and treeing will come from his momma and daddy ... not his trainer.
The dog makes the trainer , the trainer don't make the dog ...

i have. i wasnt going to win the world hunt with her, but she did tree coon, had a beagle who did it fairly often as well.
That's what most folks give advice on .. things they are " just sure" about , not the truth or what they can prove.
Alot of breeds and random dogs can and do tree coons , but that doesn't make them a coondog ... heck , alot of coonhounds can tree a coon and most of them still aint coondogs.
That fact that you would say outloud that you think you could train a poodle to tree coon just shows how green you are .
Doctors , mechanics , lawyers ... they have to get an education and conform to standards to get a job and then stand behind it , you wouldn't let a doctor operate on you if he was " just sure" he could get your appendix out with a swiss army knife.
Coonhunters can make stuff and be wrong ... and their dogs will still love them and their failures will be accepted ... and threads about breaking possums or training poodles will never fail to fill up , lol ...
dirt devil,
I dont think anyone here is taking you seriously, your way is not the only way pure and simple

look ive got 17 years under my belt and was mentored by some very good houndsmen i also know how to read a dog also and in your pic your dog is treeing by sight the tree also gives it away so you must be a better trainer then me i most not be that good since my first pup i ever trained by myself went to the world hunt and was handled by my brother sadly he got scratched actually we had a dog go every year to the world i was tought by one of the best trainers in alabama and possibly the south meny that know me knows i was taught and learned how to read a dog to tell what to do with a dog sure its born in the dogs but you said a good dog makes the trainer and thats not true one bit a good trainer and handler makes the dog a crappy trainer and handler can take a class A dog and make him look like a class C dog while a good handler and trainer can take a class C dog and make him look like a class A dog.. enybody that has alot of pics of their dogs treeing in the morning time on 20 year old trees must be good he must not have enough since to know a dog can see 20x better then a human an can spot the slightest piece of its pray up in a tree.

I didn't ask for excuses , you can't pay the bills with em' .
You are 22 , and claim 17 years experience , lol ... I can dig that because I am a fourth generation cocker/houndsmen ... myself , my father and my grandfather all had 22 years experience around that stuff by the time we were 22.
But , it's a joke to claim training experience for the years you were in diapers or someone else was buying your dog food or your momma was bossing you around .... once you start stretching the truth like that you lose trust and even some self respect if you ever had any to start with.
Those random off breeds that tree coon aint coondogs ... they might tree coon that come in and try to rob your momma strawberry plants or tree hot ones you jump up while walking in the woods ... but that aint a coondog ... that's protecting their yard or bushwacking a varmint.
No Poodle will ever consistantly be free cast and tree coon , trail coon or hold pressure and all that stuff ... to say so just shows what your standard for a coondog is .
I've had Airedales , jags , jackrussells , pitbull crosses , Mountain cur , Leopard cur , Kemmer cur , Heelers and Border Collies ... and yeah , some could tree a coon but they weren't coondogs ..
I'm not gonna start lowering my standards just to say they were coondogs or lie to myself and pretend that I was a dog training when I was in grade school .... I'm gonna save my reputation for real coondogs and for what I've done and experienced for myself as a man ...
i love people who think their way is the only way, and only what theyve done is all thats ever been done, thats why many clubs are in the shape their in, dirt devil, leave the young generation alone, they will one day pick your retirement home lol

Just goes to show most folks post not because they want to give advice or really should be .. but to brag on themselves and hear their own awesome stories ...
Nobody sends kids out with .22's and shotguns and five and six years old ... we don't have 17 years of training experience when we are 22 .... your daddy might have stood behind you and helped you shoot a gun as a kid or let you carry it empty and then shoot at stuff when he watched .. and you might have had a hound pupppy at 3 .... and that's cool enough .
But to start turning that into a Davy Crockett story that only your own dillusional mind believes is not cool ... it's embarassing to read that kind of stuff .
Yall got anything new to add or explain about training , cool pics or just more bragging on yourselves ?
I think we all now see why you dont have your location with your screen name dirt devil ha ha

Compliments are like other things of that nature in life , it feels better coming from someone else's lips than your own ...
Nobody can take credit for the truth or brag about knowing it .. because the truth existed before we were born and exists without our knowledge of it .
It'd be like bragging because you know the world is round and have since you were five .
Same with dogs , the way they learn .. are imprinted , store memory and they read us so they can understand what we want .. these things were created by God and true , not subject to " different ways " or " whatever works".
