Im going tonight...supposed to get down to twelve!! By the way, Im leaning towards rabbit dogs again and am going to sell my 9 month old walker. Plenty of grands up close. He will make a real nice dog if any of yall Virginians are interested. $300 Has tons of hunt but listing as unstarted, but he will dive on a coon and stick with any broke dog. Hes a big pretty male. 804 339-5901. Please be ok with coming to Amelia Va.Anyone in va going tonight?

I live and hunt around christainsburg and Radford. Have been having pretty good luck around the smaller patches of woods ,in the bigger mountains seems like the dogs had to go deep to tree one,i believe this is due to more hunters hunting that area. The rain and snow has moved out, now we have strong winds with low temps, want be able to go until weather changes.good luck to all.

Went out last night for the first time in a while due to some family stuff. Wasn't great conditions but just haven't been able to get out so I went anyway. COLD, bright and windy!!! I'm not used to the single digits - Close to 70 a week or so ago.. Didn't bother taking my pup. Threw the box on the 4 wheeler and headed to the back of the farm - what was I thinking - froze myself, 8 deg on therm. when I got home! Cut loose one of my older males about 9:30 and he took of like a bat out of hell, I was almost wishing I hadnt taken him since he had been kept up for so long and i knew he was gonna stretch out and I didn't feel like spending the night hunting him down I was so tired. He hit a track in just a little bit and burned it up out to about 900 yrds where he treed. Honestly the way he was running it I was afraid it may have been a deer, never had any real trouble with him running trash but he was just running it WIDE OPEN the whole way. I think he was just so wound up from not being hunted and was openeing up more than usual for himself. One of the biggest coons Ive seen this year, could see it up in a big old poplar walking in just by the moon light - thought it was a squirrel nest until I turned the light on. Maybe im better off just hunting him once a month LOL Decided to end on a good note and called it a night since I had a 2 mile 4 wheeler ride in 8 deg temps to get to the house and couldn't stop thinking about getting back to my woodstove! Looking forward to a little warmer weather around here next week!

we got lil snow on ground. anyone goin out tonite in it?

Posted by VaBirdDog on 01-27-2013 05:06 AM:

Just got in. Took same older dog and my pup. Treed two. One track was about 700 yrds the other .75 mile. Shot the .75 coon out. Big boar. Had my .22 straped over my shoulder and when I went to tie back my pup he was going crazy and got the lead wrapped up between the barrel and scope and must have pulled hard enough to knock my scope off! Took me about a handfull of bullets to get him out. Sucks trying to load a single shot bolt, cock my light just right to be able to see and shoot with the gun not sighted in. Hit him in the ass and luckily it pissed him off enough he started coming on down the tree. If he hadn't done that I probably never would have gotten him as off as my scope was and I couldn't tell where I was hitting - didn't have that many bullets with me! Lol. Real big coon for around here. All he had for a tail was a bare stump that was starting to heal back. Coyote or something must have just about made a meal out of him within the last week or so. Wish I knew how to post a pic of its tail/stump....

Good Night

Tonight was a real good night considering I have to work in the morning. Turned loose around 6:45 pm and treed a den about 100 yards from the truck. Walked about 50 yards from the tree and turned loose again. Struck a good track, ran it for about another 100 yards, and had a coon this time. Treed a den and a coon and was home by a little after 8 pm.

One night last week I treed 6 coons in about 3 hours. Hunting here has been awesome this year. Of course, I try to save what I have so I don't knock out too many.

My brother and I took his 3 year old son last night so only turned out one time. Ran track about 600 yards and finished in a den. Tonight should be good for those that are going!

Turned out twice last night. First turn out did not hit anything. Second turn out treed and had the meat. Bad weather tonight, wind and rain, so may stay in.

Turned loose last night and they just couldnt get right. Didnt turn loose till 9 and i think they had an old feeder track. Guy called and had one in a trap. turned it loose and bout half hour later i took the dogs in the area for a quick day time hunt...they treed bout 500 yards out...left him for another day. too windy and rainy here tonight

Hunted 1/31 first drop struck a track had a hot chase hounds treed deep in the swamp. Took us a while to get in there, they had a nice boar on the outside. Brought that one out with us.

Second drop they struck another good track ran it hard ,it gave them a fit in some deep water, but they got it treed. Went to the tree had to go thru some deep water to get there we got a little wet getting there. They had another nice one on the outside left it to run another day.

Then all went south , we got turned around trying to cross the main draw in the swamp. We blundered around for about a hour, after several stops to dump the water out of our boots we were all wet up to our waists. We finally made it out .

It was a great night! The hounds were awesome and we have some stories to laugh about. Gotta love it
