Thanks guys. He was a pretty nice hound with good looks and a nice mouth. He had the natural hunt like no other black dog I've seen. He wasn't perfect. He wasn't not hunted until he was 2 and died at 6. Only four years of hunting, and never hunted a lot. He has one litter of 10 pups, 4 males and 6 females.

Larry, he was on a chain. This was the second time for him in the yard. Last September he looked just as bad. But, he lived through that one. The first was a rattler and I killed that one. I'm guessing this one was a rattler. Moccasins and copperheads don't swell nearly as bad. I haven't found this one, I sure hope it don't find me. 😳

Yes years ago I had a big 90 pound male I called "Snab". He was gonna make a fine hound, well on his way. He got bit in the pen, and we never did find the snake that bit him. It killed him within a day. The vet measured the fang marks and they were 1-3/4'' apart.
I moved my kennel to where I live now, not long after that.
We figured it had to be a timber rattler, but we don't see very many around our place. Mostly smaller ground rattlers, copperheads and moccasins.
Again I sure hate to hear this for ya, it's a tough loss!

Got home today and Pete's littermate sister was barking. Well right past the end of Diva's chain is a panel fence and about six inches from her nose on the other side of the fence was the suspect. He's now DEAD!
