What I don't understand is that approx half of those on here are in favor of it but not one single coonhunter that I have talked to personally, all of whom have and use Garmins through the week, are in favor of having them on during time in. Not one!. Not sure what to make of that.

Understand what you're talking about, but my way of thinking is like this. a) if everybody was allowed to use them then that wouldn't have taken place cause the whole cast would've known where the dogs were and could've stayed in hearing range! b) if the dogs are in fact in the direction the garmin says and treed, as the rules state the points will be split because no one heard them! c) cheaters will always cheat no matter what, so let's level the playing field! Lol
I just wanna leave em on. Don't wanna use it very much anyhow lol.

He suggests to the cast that they start walking in a certain direction. Shortly he strikes and trees his dog. Sure enough when the others listen they hear the dogsl Same handler is winning the hunt be a slight margin and looks at the garmin and sees that his dog, and presumably the others, are in a certain direction. Only this time the handler suggests walking in the opposite direction to run out time. Both of the senerios happen more often than you think.
Leave them off or leave them in the truck and ensure that nobody is using them!

I'll second the 1 hour week night hunts! We've been holding 2 hunt test a month during the week and have been averaging 6 dogs in the HTX 's.

BUT at a hunt in strange country where i dont know the terrain or the size of the block or where we are in relation to hazzards i sure would like the extra piece of mind that the Garmin gives.

I could live with that, no problem as long as pulling it out or touching it during time in is a barrable offense.

The Garmins left on and use the whole two hours is happening a lot more than you think. It all depends on who is in the cast. I myself don't see a problem with it unless the cast is being delayed because of it.
the garmins help us be more responsible with our dogs even if someone did beat yah with it better than there dog gettin run over or shot off a place.
Garmin
I don't like the idea of leaving a garmin on during hunting time, because those that don't have one would be at an unfair advantage. Of all the dogs entered in a hunt on any given Saturday night, how many are ran over. Before you turn loose you can take your Garmin and look for potential hazards, if you don't like what you see you don't have to turn loose. UKC says coon hunting is a traditional sport and that is why we can't drive from tree to tree. I vote we keep it traditional.
It may be my way of thinking, but if you don't have a Garmin to use, you got other problems whether other guys have them to use or not. A Garmin is BY FAR the BEST training/hunting tool for hounds. If you don't believe me, you are nuts! I really don't understand how these could hurt things. We use them all of the time at club/youth events and they always help the casts stay together!

i am 42 and started comp hunting when i was 20 (1990). the hunts literally have changed so much, ya'll go ahead and be pro garmin it really doesnt matter that much to me anyways. i thought i would give my two cents worth on the subject in another post and realized it doesnt really matter. opinions are just that opinions and ukc will adopt what they want. my feeling is they think this will spark up attendance at the local level therefore creating more interest in the sport. honesty of the judging at the "local level "will always be in question.
for the record Jim and Clay i wholeheartedly agree with the two of ya'll.
Mark.
I kinda figured they were doing it some how as a loophole to put the new tracker/shocker combos in the hunts. Stuff ain't the same as it was in 1990. Your right about that. I had no tracker at all then. Could hunt every night within 10 miles of the house for days on end. Every single one of those turnouts are gone. Like you say. It don't matter what we think. If they want em. They will be in.
