Fattening up a pup or adult dog

I've got 3 older males (unrelated bloodlines) that ALL pace in their kennels hour after hour. My kennels are 16 feet long by 7 feet wide. These dogs get so thin from non-stop running that their spines & hip bones jut out, & it is especially bad when my females come in season.

I have tried all different high quality dry foods, & I finally realized that I had to increase the fat content (not too much, or you will trigger a case of pancreatitis) AND physically STOP the perpetual motion machines !!

So - these older adult dogs all get PUPPY food, all year long. The puppy food has a higher fat content. I mix with warm water, & just a little bit of canned food. Once a month, I give each dog a few sardines (the ones packed in water), or jack mackeral. I either feed twice per day, or one big meal once per day. BOTH will work to add weight, as long as the dogs are also CONFINED to a crate.

Every so-often, when those dogs get too thin for (my) comfort, I remove them from their kennel runs & CRATE them. They are taken out of the crates only a few times each day, to do their business in my fenced yard. Then, they go back in their crates for some forced relaxation. It takes 3 or 4 weeks of this to gradually bring their weight back up, even though my dogs are kept indoors all year.

Winter is hard on a dog, so you do need more food then. Also, bacon grease dripped on their food is good for dogs being kept outdoors.

They tend to get too fat I go to once a day. Most generally if a pup stays ribey looking or skinny it's either a health condition like kidneys or he is worm infested, try Panacure for 3 days then repeat in 2 weeks. I get it at my Vet for 18.00 for 60cc it takes 3cc a dday to worm almost any dog.

weight

Try feeding cottage cheese. You can usually get the out dated stuff at your food mart. Just mix it with the dog food your feeding now. Works really good.

Also feed them boiled rice and beef. My dogs don't ever look like their lacking food. Also in the winter i get some cracklins and will feed them. Jim is right though some dogs are to hyper to keep on weight. But if your feeding them good you shouldn't have to worry cause their healthy.

Goat milk replacer at fleet farm / small bag $11.......works real nice......
