-- HTX's ~ your opinion ~ (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928284080)
Do you think more people would enter in HTX 's if the title was considered more prestigious?
Of course they would. But it isn't so they don't. If you have to force then to hunt it by making it a requirement to title, they will just go somewhere else to compete. This isn't the military, you can't just order it.

be nice....
since you got to have 1 win to nitech and 5 nitech. wins to grnite......
have it be required to have 1 htx pass{nitech}5 htx passes{grnite}? be more proof of a coondog to me and i'd be more inclined to go look at if for sale too!!!
jmo
LOL
If yall have to have a htx title on a dog just to prove they can tree a coon before ya buy one then you must be blind, deaf, and dumb! The same people who are saying they see all kinds of GRNITECHS that cant tree a coon alone would he saying in a year or two that htx titles are just as easy to buy as GNITECH titles.

ALONE !!
proves they can do it alone!! if you gotta pack hunt to get it done right.....buy beagles and go rabbit hunting!!
nothing bugs me more than a me too hound.that will stand at your feet or slick alone!!
I have yet to see one of these super famous wonder me to studs that cant get it done alone. maybe they exist in different parts of the country but around here I have seen most of the dogs I draw at the local clubs tree a coon by them selves and the ones that I haven't yet,I have no doubt are more than capable. Before I ever dream of taking a dog to a hunt they have already been hunted alone a bunch.
Step 1. raise puppy and teach it to come and handle.
Step 2. show pup a coon in a cage, if it barks at the coon turnit loose and see if it can tree it.
Step 3. take pup to the woods and hunt it with the good ol dogs.
Step 4. Once they can do it pretty good with the old dogs hunt them alone. A BUNCH! gonna start out a little rough but get better.
Step 5. Hunt them some more.
Step 6. Hunt em some more
Step 7. Take them to a hunt and figure out they still aren't quite ready back to the woods to hunt them some more.
Step 8. Hunt them some more.
Step 9. pissed me off last night still not ready.
Step 10. Okay if by now this dog can't go and tree you a coon all by itself pretty much anytime you cut them loose shoot the worthless S.O.B. and start over at step 1. If they can they are probably ready for a hunt.
I just find it incredibly hard to believe that you guys really think a bunch of titled dogs cant tree a coon alone. Heck most of the time that is how I know a pup is ready to start. LMAO. I let my pups run loose here as much as possible. Most of them either catch one on the ground in the slough behind the house or get one run up a tree somewhere back there. WheneverI can't find a pup I just drive around the section and listen to see if I hear them. Well the treed a coon all by themselves without company guess they can come along with the old dogs tomorrow night. This is kindergarten stuff treeing a coon alone. Please!

Pack hunting
Ask anybody that knows me if I have a bunch of pack hunting dogs. They might all get together once a night if I am lucky! The rest of the time they usually scatter like a covey of quail. Wouldn't have it any other way! Never understood the point of using four dogs to accomplish what one should be able to. I would rather just ride my fourwheeler from this split tree to that split tree shooting and skinning coon all night long. Twice as many trees equals twice as many hides haning in the barn.

I think titles neither prove nor disprove a dogs true worth. If a dog obtained a title by legitimate means, then it deffiently means something and has worth. On the flip side of that, if they got a title by cheating, faults being over looked etc it means nothing. I think what everybody is try'n to express is that by a dog having a HTX title on top a NiteCh title etc is that it takes some doubt out of the equation as to whether or not he's a " me to " dog.
I've never understood why in order to obtain a NiteCh title a dog has to have won a first place with competition but yet to make GrNiteCh he doesn't have to have any competition! You can hunt a NiteCh in 5 hunts, with him the only dog in a cast all five times, and as long as he has plus points he earns championship points toward his Gr title. This seems backwards to me.
The problem lies with the people who are not really concerned with how good their dog is actually doing, but rather with the titles. I know a few people myself that seem to be chase'n a title more for bragging rights and self gratification in all the events. Whether it's a nite hunt, bench show, or HTX.
lets see.......
i've bought nitech female that wouldn't hunt alone, had to walk hunt the pos.then it was a mean bitch at the tree with other females.never split treed.
i had a male off a worldch brought up from ga. had 2 first place wins.the stupid sob gets in middle of a corn field and trees on cornstalks...more than once!!!never split treed.
I also bought a grnite that was a me too'n sob!! was 50% accurate in MICHIGAN{no leaves}alone!!!never split treed.
BUT....just WON a major hunt this year!!
how these dogs got their wins and titles is beyond me?
slick handlers,me too dogs and leaves{survive with circle} is the only thing i can think of.
also learned a mans word is useless on here too.when it comes to buying a dog!!!
PAPERS/TITLES DON'T TREE COON....COONDOGS TREE COON.
Man sounds like you ran into streak of bad luck! I know exactly what ya mean though. When I was younger I bought several dogs like that, then finally figured out buying a pup from good stock and raising it myself works better for me.
The first competition hunt I went to was when I was in high school and I went with an elderly gentlman. On the way back to the club house to turn in the cards etc another cast member ran into the back of us. Hit us so hard it broke the gyp's pelvis that was in the dog box. She could never have pups again. All because somebody was try'n to beat a deadline. To make matters worse nobody there seemed to care. Boy that left me with a bad attitude toward competition hunts & hunters. And I cared nothing about competition hunting or titles for a long time. Recently we have started a new club and the HTX's are what appealed to me initially. I'm still Leary about the nite hunts but try and make the ones I can at our club. Some hunts leave me mad and aggravated and others wanting more. I guess that's part of it. But it's a different ball game with the HTX's. Excluding the weather, there's really not anything else you can place blame on if your dog fails! There's no slick handlers, no " me to " dogs, no tree fighters, or trashy dogs. Just your dog alone. So if he fails whether it's due to tree'n a possum or failing to hunt you can only blame your own dog! Maybe that's why they appeal to me!
lol
my 1st night hunt....
i was 15. had a 4 yr old redtick female.she was a coondog!! she taught me how to coon hunt!! she put on a clinic that night.i had no idea what i was doing.i just called what i heard her doing.ended up 625+,0 minus,had some circle{treed on a old house}
cast full of grown men{a older man was in different cast that brought me}
so hunting judge adds score card up.tells me i won!!
pauses,then......asks the cast for a "favor"!! he says "all my dog needs is a 1st to be nitech".then looks at me and says"you can come back and win with that dog anytime"
not 1 adult man in the cast stood up for me or said anything!! i felt embarrassed and pressured and let him flub score card!!we get back to club and found out she{my hound, not me} would have won entire hunt!!!
the man that took me asked how my hunt went.i told him what happened.he asked others in cast and they told him same thing.he then goes to master of hounds.HE DID NOTHING!! LET IT ALL STAND!!
took me 27 years to go to another.
29 yrs. ago cheating a kid!! and its worse now.
titles are worth about as much as the paper there printed on to me!!
Dang, that's horrible! There's a youth that got done pretty much the same way where I live. Thank goodness it didn't happen at our club. We're a small new club and half our members are teenagers. We really try to stress the importance of being honest and put a lot of emphasis on the " honor rules " and that they're called " honor " rules for a reason. Any time they have a question about a certain rule or a call they send there question to me and I look it up in the rule book and the advisor then it all up and we have rule seminars. We had 2 last month. Seems to be working pretty good to. We have them before the deadline of our HTX's that way non club members come in the register and end up listening to the rule seminar. Lol I know what a fact that we gained 3 new members last month simply because of this. They like the idea of our club doing the best we can to be fair & honest. The president of our club really spends a lot of time with the youth. Most of them hunt his dogs and in return he pays all entry fees & expenses etc plus buys them waders, lights, garmins etc
We ( adults ) try to lead by example. I will never understand why some grown men will cheat a youth! Boy the damage that causes.
