Myself and Matt Bebout went out last kill season on the weekend we had snow wind and bitter cold and the old hound I'm packing did a HELL of a job and put 6 of the nicest coon you ever saw up the wood & we never saw a dog box or herd another hound.

You are not going to have a consistent hound if you don't keep them hunted up. There are a few but not many hounds that if taken to the woods two times a year will tree you coons all night long. Look at duck dogs them duck hunters train year round to keep the retrivers fresh. Race horses, they run them all year round and don't expect to take them off the feed bag and go win the Derby.

The old timers tell me of the day when a coon brought 35 and 50 dollars and the promise of a nice payday at the end of the night kept them boys in the timber. I don't think the hounds are different the hunters are ....

Just my opinion

amen!!

Mine is 85 too 90 I made him night champion in six hunts and Lost one cast out of six he wins getting alone with a coon he is track dog I most say alot of people are breeding too much tree power That why I like the coma dogs they are not 120 bark in min tree dogs but they have there coons

Posted by headless01 on 11-23-2012 01:54 AM:

thick coon or thin coon has nothing to do with accuracy, if dog opens on coons scent, it should be able to tree the coon, period.

Posted by razor345 on 11-23-2012 01:57 AM:

Me and Marshall are going to set up a hunt. I agree if you got a slick tree dog and put him in thick coon that means you will walk to even more slick trees. Plain and simple slick tree dogs are born not made.

Posted by bowling on 11-23-2012 02:10 AM:

I agree 100 percent there should a hunt set up for those that wish to show their hounds . One slick tree your out I would pay a nice entry fee just to see how accurate they really are. Hunt them by their self to qualify then cast them out to see the ones that can really take the pressure because there would be a lot of coon freeing going on.

Posted by llam on 11-23-2012 04:24 AM:

Couldn't agree more. If something was set up to qualify your dog to hunt a night hunt we'd see better dogs, not slick handlers with junk that scratch a dog on garbage so they're paper champion can win. Something like the htx, go out with a judge, prove your dog can tree a coon, if its slick your out, and the hunt winner takes home an added purse. And coma dogs in my opinion is where it's at. To bad I got kennels full of clover, and nailor blood, all of them junk that tree coon all night long alone, and look like trash in company lol

I would like to see something where the dog wins. Not a slick handler or a buddy system or three to four dogs show up at a hunt type of garbage. Let the dogs go and see what happens most of the time everyone knows what dog won. They need to find a way to get rid of slick tree dogs, babbling, and fighting. Most dogs can handle all kinds of tree pressure but can't handle fang pressure and to me its not needed.

Ill give you a call when I get home from vacation. And we will try and set something up.... But I have a question for everyone. Does it make a difference where you hunt? Like for instance I have a friend that averages 250-300 coon a season in Michigan. Then here where I live in western nc we average 60-70 a season. If we swapped dogs would we have the same numbers?? Or would the North Carolina dog still tree 60-70 in Michigan and would the Michigan dog still tree 250-300 in western nc?

Not Happy

Okay most people buy dogs without hunting anything from the same line / SIRE / DAM / GRAND SIRE / GRAND DAM . Common bad traits slick trees , or just a tree backer , track wallering or won't stay treed . Really hunt with some of the line before you buy a dog and find out at 3 yrs old that you have waist-ed your time . Some are breeders , breeding for all grand tree backers or just plain mean tree dogs that can clear a tree and be the only one left standing . Do your home work you will find what your looking for or your buying a lottery ticket / pup .

Out of 90 present of pups I would say 25 will make something special but over the years I have own pups off alot of different studs and some Were better than others but as hunters that love this sport people should work together too make our breed better it does not matter if ur a comp hunter or hide as long as ur have fun with What ur hunting That all That matters the male I have is two here in this mountain he has been the death Of alot of coons in the last 2 years but I am sure there Are better than him out there but I like him and That all That matters

In my opinion 80% of trashy dogs ie slick treeing, babbling, fighting, etc is problems owners can fix but choose not to because they cant stand to admit there dog has a problem or it isnt as good as they think it is. Either fix them or cull them but dont make them grnitech and want people to breed to them when they aint worth a plug nickel to start

Reply to Marshall if you got a hard going hound it does not matter what state you live in if the coon are there a good hound will tree them. A dog that is really accurate is going to tree what coon is there. In thin coon you have to have a dog that will go hunting and go as far as it takes to tree a coon. Where I live my dogs have to road, rig, free cast for me to be effective. I can't tree as many as people in southern Michigan because I don't have as many coon. But when they strike I expect to see the coon. I have a young female that I have been running and she slicks some has a really good nose but lacks brains she is about 80% accurate and she is leaving my house she pulls up short to much. Every good hound I have owned has been really accurate from the start dogs that start slick tree will always slick I don't matter how much shocking or whipping they still will do it. That female is solid clover and I like clover but she is not for me hard tree dog and will spilt tree. just do your homework and spend time with your pup hunt him hard. Don't forget you can't put hunt in a dog you can't make a dog tree and you can't make them tree real coon either they got it or they don't. A lot of people pay so much for a pup that they can't get rid of him because he is suppose to be good the they breed it and then they make more junk. Make sure you get a pup from a female that has very few holes in her and you will have a good start.

Y'all come down to southeast Arkansas in late July and we'll see what kind of dog you are feeding and how much of a "coon hunter" you are!!

Posted by razor345 on 11-24-2012 03:39 PM:

Every state has its problems I no its dry there. But its cold here and we have snow and in the winter months here the snow gets deep and really cold. So what I'm saying is it don't matter a dog gets use to the weather. See how many coon you tree here in Feb your dog won't leave the road very long and it will be froze and will be back shaking. Dogs get use to climates. It's hard for me to do very good at the pkc world because late Oct my dogs have there winter coat and the heat down there is hard on them. I have drove all over the country and hunted I have seen some good dogs and I have seen some highly advertised dogs that was not worth feeding but they had great papers and a great story.

consistancy

Well,
it's nice to see other people realize that this breed has consistancy problams and that the quality of hounds has been going down hill. I hunt all year round, don't put up with slick treeing, don't make excuses and am just plain tired of seeing the same crap. It doesn't seem to mater were I go, they are all inconsistant except those with hot noses that can hardly find their feed pan. I've not givin up and have hounds that are above average but I'm not satisfied with what I have and don't know were to turn.

Posted by razor345 on 11-27-2012 12:21 AM:

Only the people running the dog can change things. Demand a dog that trees real coon. That way when you go to a hunt you don't have to act so suprized when your dog has a coon. How could you pleasure hunt a dog that's not accurate. I get no pleasure if it is empty. We are the only ones that can change this. How does it make you feel when your dog loads up on tree and blows the top out and a dog sits down around you has the coon. I no how most feel no good and the other half of the honest coon hunters you here about are think well it looks like we or I have to get that dogs minus. You ever notice how nice people are and then three dogs slick and one trees a coon and instead of that dog did a nice job. It's war and that makes for a nice hunt. We have all been in hunts like this with dishonest people and dogs. But I think if the dogs cleaned up so would the people because how much could you argue about if all the dogs did a nice job.

Posted by youngwalkerman on 11-27-2012 12:22 AM:

I don't know about u but use as hunters we
All always want a better dog yes but the male I have is the best dog I have ever hunt he will not back a slick and if he makes a tree he will have 2 eyes a looking at u but he will miss but he don't alot and I would hunt him for in body he is nice all way around

Posted by djdoggone on 11-27-2012 03:47 AM:

Good old dog

My six year old male cold tracked a coon over 1/4 mile then treed it layed up. You tree two coons where I hunt in two hours and you are having a good night. Our coons travel long ways feeding and run long ways when trailed by a dog. Half mile is common to travel after cast to tree coon. I have hunted easy spots and can drive twenty miles and hunt this type of area but around these hills where I live you have to have a decent dog to tree many coon. Bring one of them northern ten acre patch of woods champions around here and they can look real bad. Also I like to hunt cold nose dog that can move a track as with thin coons some nights you wont even strike a coon with a hot nose dog in three or four cast.

Posted by razor345 on 11-27-2012 04:08 AM:

Guys where I live in Michigan you can run a tank of gas out of your truck and never touch payment. Is that big enough woods with no corn. I live above corn country. People are not getting the point it does not matter where you live if you turn a dog loose and he trees there should be a coon there. I would rather drive around and catch him up not treed still searching for a track than standing on a slick tree a 1/2 mile deep. This is simple math either the coon is there or it isn't. If it don't bother you walking to empty trees for exercise then keep hunting him. To me it is a lack of effort or brains if the are slick. You know what your hunting. I would rather see a dog on the gps looking for a coon than just load up on a tree. If a dog opens and runs a track you should see a coon.

Posted by nkuhl on 11-27-2012 10:52 AM:

consistancy

Another big part of the problem is the guys who have been hunting for 15 years or less never got to see the old blood that could run a track and have the coon consistantly in bad conditions. I'm not talking about track strattling for a half an hour and treeing with a coon 1 out of every 10. I'm talking about 9 out of 10 times regardless of the conditions. People breed this trait out because of the hunts and the magic 2 hour limit and it's killed the consistancy in my opinion. This is the meaning behind this thread in blunt terms.
