Me too Richard. I remember when my Grandmother would cook them with green apples from the tree in the yard. Oh Man. Haven't had one quite like that since she passed, but the recipe was found when we went through her house, and now the good wife is getting very close to what granny used to. Nothing better than an apple pie and ice cream.

Some of my best memories from long ago are the smells and food that came out of my grandmother's kitchen. On Thanksgiving, there would be at least 25 people in the dining room eating. We would go rabbit hunting with my uncles, brothers and cousins in the morning while the womenfolk stayed home to cook. We would have at least 2 turkeys and a giant ham. There would be several different types of pies lined up on the sideboard to choose from but apple was always my favorite. I am getting hungry just remembering.

Man O man. Your post sure brings back some great memories. We did a lot of the same things your family did back then. Sure do miss those grand parents being there with us, but we are thankful for the lessons they taught us, and the good times we were allowed to have with them.

What exactly is a gooseberry? I don't think that I have ever seen one. Do they come from a goose? Or are they like possum grapes?

A gooseberry is a small light green sphere-shaped smooth berry. It grows on bushes that are covered in nettle-like thorns. There is both a domestic and wild variety, sometimes you'll get into the wild ones when your hunting and they're rough on your legs. The berry itself looks like a tiny green basketball and they are very sour and bitter. I can't stand them, but for some reason the people who like them think they are the best berry on earth.
