I have had 3 of them for years and years and never had the first charging problem.

The charging system on the dc30's is susceptible to damage from mud, dirt, etc. The clip will wear out over time. I keep mine clean but it is still showing signs of wear. Also the way the light turns off when it's charged you never know for sure if the unit is fully charged or if the worn out charging clip may have wiggled loose. With the dc40's the light blinks when charging and stays solid when fully charged.

I am not buying anything for coonhunting until something I have breaks. The most important component in coonhunting is healthy dogs and hunt time. I have everything I need at this point and would rather spend my money on feed and fuel and not try to play the tech game where as soon as you get something the next best thing comes out a year later.

my opinion
they keep trying to make things better but they dont..i think they should fix the problems with the old systems and be done with it...with to days economy who has 1100 bucks laying around to give for a tracker.. $ 600 bucks is plenty to pay for one....ill keep what i have ....320 with dc 30s...they work good enough for me...with the exception of the charging system...i have never had to leave a dog over night since i got mine when they first came out with the 220s

seen the new dc 50, its a nice collar and has the signal on top, also really like the sd card with all the maps and it also is a plot card, shows property boundries and the owners name.

I DON'T WANT AN ALPHA . I BELIEVE MOST PEOPLE HAVE MORE MONEY THAN THE BRAINS IT TAKES TO OPERATE THE ALPHA. MOST ALL THE OLD TIMERS I HAVE SEEN WITH THE ALPHA DON'T HAVE A CLUE HOW HALF THE FUNCTIONS WORK MY SUGGESTION IS "K.I.S.S." = Keep It Simple Stupid. most coonhunters are not computer savy.
they should have just made the alpha compatible with the dc30 and dc40 along with the tracker/trainer collar
i think Garmin missed the boat with the Alpha. They created a system that has to stay in the truck, which makes it useless in the hunts and they must have assumed that all of us with 6 or 8 hundred dollars invested in dc collars would just throw them away and buy new tt collars. Not me. I would bet they are still sellin more astros than alphas.

Everything that makes them a COONDOG is on the inside
i have had good luck with my dc 40s.i wont be buying an alpha ever.i like my 320.i would entertain the idea of a couple dc 50's if they ever come out.
was told the dc 50 will be available at autumn oaks, the new map card is awesome, its $100 and is done by the individual states, now you can show the game wardens where the property boundries are and show them where you have been, or hurry and delete your tracks so as not to incriminate ones self!

DC50
July 2 2013 is the release date for DC50 its supposed to to be $240
Assuming the DC50 is a new collar . Does it work with the Astro 320 and the 220 or is it for the Alpha system ?
Supposedly only the 320 the transmitter is moved on top of the collar like the 30 but charges like the 40 the battery is supposed to last a few hours longer, it is not compatible with the 220 I have heard
Was that the setup the guys were using a counter balance on the collar to keep everything where it worked the best ?
quote:that is strange that the 220 wont be able to track the dc 50 since 320 and 220 are compatible.

Guess we will know July 2
if the breeders would go back to breeding coon dogs instead of competition dogs you wouldn't need all that junk anyway.it's supposed to be coon hunting not dog hunting.
breed the sense back into the hounds so they will handle & not leave for the next county before they can find a hot enough track they can smell then tree up the wrong tree about 50% of the time.

I don't know anything about a dc 50 but I will give you my opinion on your question. Dale it is not about balance as it is reception. T
These collars Have two antenna a VHF and gps. The dc 30 VHF antenna is the long thin black antenna. The black box on top of the dc 30 is the gps antenna.
In the dc 40 because everyone was taking them apart and breaking the connection garmin loaded the gps antenna back in the end of the housing and removed it from the collar. Think about a cb antenna is it going to work better on top your truck or under your truck. With the tt10 garmin put the gps antenna back on top. Hopefully if they come out with a new collar it will be there also.
Now someone said it was strange perhaps a new collar would work with the 320 and not a 220 and it seems that way since ther are same frequency but think about this. Birdseye don't work with 320. The operating system is not the same. We have computer programs today that won't run on old machines as the communication platform is different. Same thing here. Garmin has been making improvements every year and I don't know any reason for them to stop now.
Birdseye don't work with 320
Bruce , I'm assuming you meant Birdseye don't work with the "220's" .
I guess the counterbalance thing was to keep that GPS antenna on top of the dogs neck where it belonged . I really haven't had any major problems with my DC 40's . Couple times I've lost signal in the hills and if it didn't feel right a new collar antenna has fixed it every time . Most of my hill country hunting is up north where I use a Polaris Ranger . These old bones don't move very fast on foot anymore .
.
That was typo should of said 220
.
Dale the dc40 work pretty good in my opinion.
Many guys will put the dc40 on a dog then put a shock collar on and then put a beep beep collar on top of that. Now think where the GPS antenna is and what that signal has to o through to get picked up. If your putting all those collars on your dog then put the gps on last which will be the one higher up the neck.
