Shannon and I were coming home from Springfield one night and seen a big cat jump across the road. Conservation said we were seeing things. The very next week the local newspaper had an artical with pictures about a farmer that shot a cat that was killing his cows......makes ya kinda go HMMMM....

I was in Telephone,TX a couple of weeks ago, and I was driving through the Caddo National Forrest and I see a big black cat right at sundown. I do not know if it was a Panther or not, but it was either that or a real dark Mt Lion.

Others have said that they have seen the same type of cat.

And NO, it was not a regular house cat. lol

I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OVER THE YEARS IN BIG PEE DEE RIVER SWAMP HERE IN SC SOME WERE BLACK AND SOME WERE YELLOW AND IF IM SEEING THING THERES SEVERAL OTHERS THAT SAW THEM TOO

Posted by Geminite on 03-04-2006 01:29 PM:

Rip, I agree with all of your posts....as we were talking about a "black panther" on a different forum and i was curious if it was a mountain lion or sometihing else---so asked my biology teacher and he came up with the same conclusion as you.... a Florida panther, not a shadow or a black phased mountain lion....but i think you are also right about the cat's range--but i think if just a few strayed here or there, and the game commissions wont fess up then i think the cat could very well expand its range farther north....with all that said, in my neck of the woods they have a bigfoot convention!!....if you go to there meetings and even giggle, your in a mess of trouble!!....i guess that means i aint never seen a bigfoot.....ps, i live up north and, beleive me, coons go in holes!

black panther

Floridapanther.net under what's in a name has a link about halfway down that says are there black panthers this is what it said

English speakers have referred to big cats, particularly black ones, as "panthers" for centuries. Early settlers seeing large cats at night may have mistakenly thought they were black. No black panthers or black cougars have ever been documented in Florida or in any other part of North America. The only large black cats are variants of the leopard found in Africa and Asia, and the jaguar found in the remote forests of Mexico, Central America, and South America. These variants are called melanistic after the dark skin pigment melanin. They have normal black spots but their background coat color is so dark that their spots can only be seen in direct sunlight. Once thought to be a separate species, black leopards and jaguars may appear in the same litter as spotted variants. Black or melanistic bobcats, which are spotted and are sometimes mistaken for panthers, have been documented in Florida.

I can't hardly hear my dogs barking for all the panthers screaming at night. I see one just about everytime I go hunting(blackuns mostly). Come on guys, I believe that people think they see black panthers but the truth is they ain't no such thing in the US. and there are no black phase jaguars any farther north that South America. Also everything I have ever read says mountain lions don't scream either.

One other point. There's alot of things I have never seen in my life. I have never seen a wild bear, even though they are all over the state of Tennessee. I even went to Cades Cove several times and have never seen one, just unlucky that way I guess. I have never seen a porcupine either, even though have hunted in their range quite a bit. I would be a bit arrogant to accuse everyone that ever mentioned seeing one of being a liar or "seeing things".

It seems we as humans have a problem with that at times. People that have never owned an accurate dog will SWEAR they don't exist. People that have hunted up north all their life will SWEAR coons don't go into holes. People that have only hunted in the deep South will SWEAR every hole is a dillar. Where I am from if it circles it's a Fox, no way is it a deer. In other areas of the country a deer will circle as well.

Everybody is off in their own little world completely oblivious that the Internet has allowed us to share things with people all over the country. In reality animals do different things in different areas of the country and we need to get used to the fact that just because we personally have never done it, or don't have dogs with that ability, doesn't mean many many other people haven't.

Not meaning this in a bad way toward anybody, it's just a pet peeve of mine that I have noticed about the Internet. It is a little different since used to when we told huntin stories we were usually talkin to someone rather close geography wise. Now the huntin story I post may be read by people in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Maine, Oklahoma, and Califirornia all at the same time. There is a big difference in the habitat of all these places and a big difference in terrain and how those animals act as well and just because those animals don't act that way "around here" or I have never seen something doesn't mean the person telling the story isn't telling the 100% God's honest truth.

You sure hit the nail on the head with this post Dr. Rip!

they were making a sound like a grunt but not like a pig and gruntig back and forth from one ridge i was standing on to the next one over .like the way hoot owls do at night when talking to each other...
i got out of there FAST when that starting happening..
got back to where my buddy was holding the other 2 dogs and he said they were doing the same thing where he was and the dogs were cowered down and scared to death when the sounds got close to him.

when i was on top of the ridge alone, had the hair standing up on the back of my neck just like the dogs hair was standing up on their back, kinda funny thinking back, never seen a walker look like a rodesion ridgeback before or after that night.

couldnt have been sheep,i dont think he was old enught to leave the house by his self at that time, lol

And we wonder why the department of wildlife doesn't believe hunters who see "mountain lions" when the same people say they see black mountain lions when there is no such thing. You might as well say you've seen a unicorn. You'd garner the same credibility.
