I feed pro plan. Feed the dogs about 4 cups a day. The dog that gets hunted 4-5 nights a week is solid muscle and never runs out of gas. The dogs that don't get hunted as much are just about to get fat. In the summer I will feed them about 2 cups a day. When feeding Hi Pro I feed them almost double to get the same results. Pro Plan is good feed but I wouldn't call Hi Pro Garbage.

I switched

our 2 dogs over to Hi-Pro after the Diamond scare. I have them on automatic feeders & really haven't noticed any difference at all in the amount they consume or poop out. Since it's colder, Autumn eats about 12-15 lbs. in 7 days & Sammie just a tad more. Both dogs are fat & sassy & happy.

I have tried Black Gold, Diamond, and Purina.

I was not happy with Diamond at all. Black Gold was a decent feed but I had to travel a longer distance to get it and it just wasn't worth it to me. I feed Purina Hi Pro now and my dogs really like it. I pay $17 per bag but I am waiting on my rebate tickets to come in the mail. All you have to do is save the points circles off the bags and send them in. I have also tried the Pro Plan and my dogs seem to do the same on it as Hi Pro. But different dogs react differently to their dog feed. Now I do not like Dog Chow at all. My dog's lost weight on it and their coat wasn't slick at all. So we are sticking with Hi Pro and are very happy with the results.

I feed HiPro to two of my dogs and O.N.E. to the other two. No question ONE is the better feed, firm stool, less stool. It also costs about twice as much. I'm sure ProPlan is even better if you can afford it. My dogs do fine on HiPro, for the two i hunt hard, I spend the extra money and feed them ONE. Everybody has their budget, if you can afford ProPlan, I'm sure you're feeding the best. HiPro works for me and it's cheap. I fed Black Gold for years, I doubt there's anything much better, just too much hassle trying to buy it around here.

Chopin Axe

DO NOT USE ANY FEED THAT HAS BEEN IN THE FEED BIN YOU WERE USING WITH THE CONTAMINATED FOOD.

It's a fungus, you have seeded the bin and that fungus will grow in any brand of dogfood you buy. If you use up the dogfood real fast then it won't mature enough to produce the toxin, but if not you will have the same problem with any food you put in that bin.

CLEAN THAT BIN REALLY, REALLY WELL, personally I would use Bleach. After you clean it, rinse it with lots of clean water and then let it air out in the sun for a few days. Fungus loves moisture and the sun beaming down will make sure it is dry and it also has UV rays that help kill it as well.

The best

feed your hounds TABLE SCRAPS..........THEY WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT !!!!!!. I hunt as hard as anyone I know.....I have feed ol' roy, Diamond, black gold and Hi-pro. I just recently started feeding hi-pro and seems to be the best. The other 3 (ol'roy, diamond and black gold) have very close to identical ingridients. Feeding a good qaulity feed and a small slice of beef liver will go along ways. OOHHH, as far as terds go. If you feed a 26 % pro. 18% fat (or similiar) and hunt your hound once or twice a week.......then you'll be cleaning alot more sh!t then the guy who feeds the same and hunts 5 nights a week. If the animal doesnt need it then there's only one other way to get rid of it.

I was in the Purina Pro club a few years ago, but the dillemma was that they sent me coupons for the weight circles I sent in. At that time, Sam's Club would not accept coupons.

Is it still that way?

Anyone that tries ProPlan or Bil-Jac will find out that they're much better foods and the price isn't as big after using it as it is on the shelf . Hi-Pro is about as close to ProPlan/BIl-Jac as Old Roy is to real dog food ,lol.

Posted by Rip on 12-28-2005 04:22 PM:

It's not just ingredients. It's the order of the ingredients, how much of each, etc.

You could make a feed that was 100% protien but if it was non digestable protien then the dog would starve to death with a full belly.

The percent protein and fat are good to know, but the percent doesn't matter nearly as much as whether or not the protein and fat are digestable to the dog.

That's why the cheap feeds, even though they have the same "numbers" don't have anywhere near the performance.

The rebates for dog food are actually checks. I had to point that fact out to Sam's Club nearly every time and it did get tiring. I do feed Hi Pro and I'm sure Pro Plan and One are better as they should be. My dogs seem to eat about the same regardless of what I feed. Activity seems to dictate how much.

Posted by DOC on 12-28-2005 04:50 PM:

Dr. Rip is right again... not just amount of ingredients such as protien-fat, but formulation that provides digestable nutrition that is key.... have fed hounds and other dogs for many yrs. and have experimented with most well know brands as well as lesser known stuff. remember when feed was just what ever the mill mixed up and not comparable to what is produced today... have fed Diamond since about the time they started in business, have tried others to assure that I was feeding as good as could get and have always returned to diamond... feed mostly the Green Bag, have used the black bag when hunting hard- etc. aging has kinda taken care of that though... prefer the Green Bag to hi-energy... our dogs never refuse feed of any brand, believe would eat you if you got in the feed pan.. Diamond has been the best for our needs... have used Pro-plan etc. and it as well as others excellent, just could not see better than Diamond... am concerned about problem Diamond has and how they respond to dog owners who have experienced problems and their efforts in quality control..did contact them and got immediate reply to questions I asked... our area does not have the contaminated feed, but still concerned.. hope eveyone who has experienced a problem gets it resolved, tough to lose a dog that can't be replaced.. agree that Diamond could be more invloved in promoting sporting activity, wish they would, but also many others corporations that sell to outdoors folks do very little to support those who but their products... guess bottom line is buy-feed what works best for you, lucky to live in a country that allows that choice...

proplan

dont want to start a new thread about dog food so I ask this. How long will 50 # of pro plan last 4 dogs. I feed hip-pro now and it last about 7-8 days. pro-plan is twice the price....will it last 14-16 days. Just curious, because if it does I'll gladly switch as I wont the best for my hounds and mutts but if it cost twice as much it better last twice as long. AS far as bil-jac goes Ill give you a tip. use the refrigerated kind on the end of a hook.....it works !!!!!!

I'm with Justin and Josh. If you're feeding Ol'Roy, you might as well feed them the bag too, because it has just as much nutrients as the food inside.

Has Hi-Pro changed their ingredients in the last couple of years? I fed it several years ago, and I thought that yellow ground corn was the main ingredient. My dogs never did well on it, and would have runny yellow stools. When Walmart quit carrying it, that was good reason to switch.

I have fed Pride and Diamond since then.

Pride worked well, when it was actually dog food, but they would change their formula all the time. This was evidenced by getting different size, color and texture food about every time I bought a couple new bags. I even got chicken feed mixed in with several bags one time. Last winter all of the dogs started looking poor, and I switched to Diamond. Took them three days to look normal again. I have the vet bill to prove they were perfectly healthy dogs on bad feed.

Diamond has treated me well so far, but I am discouraged about their poor customer service.

I had three dogs on diamond green bag that would eat 75 lbs (a bag and a half) per month on self feeders. That is the best way to tell if they are getting all they need.

It sounds like you guys are either feeding to much, or your dogs aren't getting the nutrients that they need.

look at the ing. in ol' roy and then diamond..........not much of a diff. at all is it. My buddy feeds ol'roy hi-pro and his hounds look as good as any I have seen and one of them has earned the name "ALL NIGHT" for a reason. all feeds are overated so I'll stick with the sorry purina "HI-PRO"

*****Then its obvious I hunt alot harder then you because I was feeding the same feed as you for the last 2-3 yrs. and I fed roughly 60 # a week to 3 dogs (and a chihahau). do they look good....no, they look great. but I just didnt want to take a chance so I switched to purina. nothing wrong with diamond. 75 # a month. thats what yrd. dogs would eat.

show, not arguing, just sharing my experience.

Take a couple samples of different feeds to your vet for a digestibility test. They will be able to tell you how much of that protein your dog can actually get out of the food. You will be surprised.

I believe I saw where a guy on here ran a lab, and volunteered a discount for anyone wanting a test done.

The mill where I used to buy Pride from ran these tests, and would make you madder than a hornet to know what percentage of that protein your dog can actually digest.

Let's just say there was proof when my dogs went poor on Pride, and I was reimbursed.

Posted by Hump on 12-28-2005 05:52 PM:

show, you probably do hunt more than I do. Last time I was to OK, I would find it hard to believe that anything could survive there, so i'm sure your dogs have to work harder to find a coon.

Pull your panties out of your crack, and have a decent discussion without insulting me please.

Posted by Justin Smith on 12-28-2005 05:52 PM:

How much each dog eats is hard to guess , but ProPlan will go farther than the Hi-Pro by far ...that will be true for any dog.

I always figured if you can't afford to feed premium feed then you either got too many dogs or just can't afford a dog at all ..... it stinks but that means nowdays that you are gonna spend nearly a dollar per pound for the good stuff ....but it is worth it in every way.

Kcal/cup is a big thing now ..it is the measure of metabolizable energy . Most brands don't even bust 400 but one brand of the ProPlan is 471 which is the highest I've seen ..

Here is the run down on Diamond's performance formula -

Here is a good source of information for different types of dog foods as well as a label explaination that everyone should read.

show, I don't have the bag in front of me, but I found a resource that said there were 4 cups per pound of dog food. If it is way off when I get home, I will refigure.

All my dogs weigh around 50 lbs. Suggested feed rate is 3 cups a day.

25 lbs. x 4 cups/lb. = 100 cups.

100 cups divided by 3 cups/day = 33 days or one month.

My dogs ate roughly that per month on their own with the self feeders.

If I give them three cups of feed in their bowl in the morning, they actually act hungrier than when they eat the same amount in smaller portions throughout the day.
