-- walker dog accuracy????????? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=74754)
if I were to hunt Walker dogs
and that is a BIG if---lol
it would be the old House bred stuff
followed several of those as a kid that had the groceries when they got parked and usually had good hound mouths
these are two things that I HAVE to have in a hound and two things that MOST treeing walker breeders are overlooking in the quest for all grand pedigrees and hunt winners
I like to win as much as anyone, but refuse to do it with a dog that trees blanks and sounds like a squeeky well pully
if I can't enjoy them during the week why do I need them?
my hat is off to the walker breeders that are still trying to produce the RIGHT kind
Sheep, you know my opinion.
But to put it a better way. The clover dog I'm familiar with will not willingly lie to me. Or even better she has no desire to please me but only herself and what pleases her is coon, nuff said.

Accurate dogs
I've hunted with alot of coondogs and i've hunted with alot of tree dogs.In my opinion most walkers are about 60% accurate and I know this isn't going to make me alot of friends but,I have a opinion! Take a walker 20 nights and count the coon seen VS. the trees made, an u tell me the accuracy! I think you'll see i was been nice with the 60%. I havent hunted much with any thing other than walkers and blueticks but in my opinion tree for tree you'll look at more coons under a blue dog hands down! not near as many trees I know, but the last time I checked, now correct me if i'm wrong but in UKC we don't PLUS SLICK TREES!
GOOD HUNTIN
no, but they SURE DO get CIRCLED more often than not.
accurate dogs
U may be right but it still takes OLE MIDNIGHT BANDIT TO PLUS! 500 circle or not. I believe in alot of the breeding today it's TREE,TREE, TREE, TREE, TREE! now i'm not partial to a breed but I am partial to COONDOGS!
walkers
if i were to own a walker i would send it to timothy ball that way i know wether it was a coondog or just a worthless ole mutt he would be advertised to the highest degree and make it sound like he was the very best! heck at times he almost makes me wanna own a walker

accurate
I don't usally get on this board but if yall are thinking you're going to get a bloodline and have a accurate dog good luck. Its a natural abillty that their individually born with in all breeds. If you want a energetic hound get a walker. If you want a lower keyed more layed back hound get a bluetick. You know if you've hunted very much those kind of blueticks that trail on five acres for five hours. You don't have to walk real far to them no now days they're breeding blueticks with a little more tree. Now you can actually go get them off a tree. Though any dog that trees misses no matter what breed. Some of them are better at having a real live one than others but they are few and far between no matter what the breed or bloodline. WALKERS THE WINNINGEST DOG EVER .

I just hunted with a Clover bred hound in crappy weather. Made trees with coon in em, every time out. In CRAPPY Weather, leaves off so the proof was there.

I was hunting in the local hunts when Mac had Lipper. At first he had a rap for throwing crazy pups. I met Mac at Clinten, MO and talked with him several times. He is a fine man. Not long after Lipper started throwing pups I drew a 7mo old female at Garland or Altoona. I cant remember which. That pup smoked 3 good hounds, I know cause I owned 1 of them. I had hunted with the other 2 before. That little puppy had EVERY first tree. She also had the meat. She finished with 3 first place wins, and was one of the first I ever heard of that made NtCh at less than 1yr old.
This was 20 years ago. I said then, and stand by it today, if I ever own a walker IT WILL HAVE LIPPER BLOOD. Not many hounds not only reverse a bad rap, but also turn it into a good one by PROVING the bad rap wrong. Lipper is a bigger legend around his home turf then he ever was to the public. How many studs can you say that about?
I'd have to say, a dog that ain't famous and none of you know him cause one of my friends has him. He's accurate as heck, find one no matter where you turn him out. His name's Buck.

Accuracy
Change the rules to plus if you see a coon, minus if you don't see a coon (results oriented rules), and you'd see different results.
I don't know if this would be a bloodlines issue or a training issue. The most accurate tree dogs I've owned would have been lock-up false treeing dogs if I didn't boot them off the bad trees.
There is no substitute for tree power, but you do have to train them!!! Part of the training is to not accept emptys!!!
FINLEY RIVER
Have owned this breed for a while actually I co own a finley river bred dog. As far as him slick treeing ....YES I HAVE SEEN HIM MISS. HE DOES NOT MAKE A HABIT OF IT. I have seen this trait of slick treeing in grade dogs as well as P.R dogs and one breed is as bad as the next of all breeds. I have owned Hammer dogs that slick tree ( no longer here ) I have owned them that would flat move a track and come treed real quick tree for 5 mins. or so and go start another track. I hunted with all breeds that would just plain slick tree for the hell of it. One of the worst ever I hunted with was two Nailor dogs about the same age that treed 10 slick trees in about 45 mins. I have seen the same out of the old hard time speck dogs slick tree after slick tree, I have witness slick treeing black dogs and have seen some as accurate as they come. So my opinion is that tree dogs are being what the competitioin hunter is looking for in a post back awhile I saw where someone stated a pleasure hunter didn't know what a coon dog was and didn't expect as much out of a hound as a nite hunter. I will tell you this............I myself want a dog that can be cast alone ( no me too dogs for me ) go in the country without company find a coon track run it right ,come treed ,stay until I get there and have the coon most of the time . A dog can be fooled to tree an empty tree but I will not feed a slick treeing idiot and there is a difference in the two.

More often than not it's the handlers fault for having a slick treeing dog...or a super accurate one. We as handlers ruin way more pups with our training methods. This post is a little kooky because it's rarely the dogs fault...they do what we reinforce them to do. With that said, no breed or line is more accurate than another. It's all what they learn from us during their first few seasons that makes them accurate or not. My opinion anyway.

If you've had your dog it's whole life, I'd say you did. I'm not knocking your dog but...thats 1 in 10 trees is empty..not a great average. A dogs nose is so powerful, they know more than we care to admit, when there is a coon in the tree and when there aint. They can smell when a coon goes up and comes back down...they can smell a coon going up a tree...and also air scent drifting down cuz there's a coon in it. Honestly, it's not so much to ask for a dog to be 99.9% accurate. Infact, it's very easy for a dog to be. Try this,,take a worthless hound and fill a sock with it's feed. Drag it in the woods and hide it, in trees where it cant see it, under blowdowns, in some water. I GUARANTEE the dog will find it 100% of the time. Ya know why?..because the only reward it gets it being able to eat. Not pet by us through our hopes, or false shining...not rewarded by us leashing it and going home to a warm box (yes thats a reward to some hounds). Not trying to be long winded and I'm not picking on you but we all need to stop thinking 80 to 90% is acceptable. 100% is an acceptable goal to strive for..and attainable too. It's all in the training..and the culling I suppose. All dogs have it in them, some just dont want to let it out...whether by our sloppiness, trauma, diet, surroundings, or other cause.
