IF someone asked me what i hunt. I tell them Jet dogs, which yes jet comes from hammer breeding. With that ,what has hammer dogs won? Northern Blue dancer is hammer bred. Bingo and levi northern blue crystal and so on (top side). bottom side is Mighty Blue Mae Belle, hoosier cc Sam, hoosier CC joe top (hammer) Kirbys blue spike and maggie mae, north star blue candy on the bottom all hammer also. So that puts a hammer bred dog placing 2nd over all in the UKC world hunt Same has Hoss did. I cant see where S.R. hounds have won more big hunts than Hammer Dogs. I believe if what you have is working for you,, stick with it. S.R. and ucthman seem to work well in the south. Hammer Jet and Spanky dog seem to work well in the North. They all have their place.
Behond the dogs I can remember being a young man hunting a fair hound and not known by anyone just some kid. Someone pointed Dave Dean out to me at a hunt. Being Star struck I had to say Hello to the Legend, Dave Dean. Some of you may be able to relate if you've ever had someone you've never seen before in your life comes up to you and calls you by your first name. (back to the story) Mr. Dean sat on the tailgate and talked with me like he knew me all his life. ( like a nephew or something) I enjoyed hearing about some the greats of the past and the hunt against Spring Creek Rock. But most of all i enjoyed just the idea that someone like Dave Dean took the time to even speek with me. For that Mr Dean went from Legend to Idol or Hero. While I'm still not famous in the bluetick world i wont forget where i came from. Say what you want about the Hammer Dogs but leave the man alone, I'll defend him til the day i die. Not because of something he showed me in the woods but because of something he showed me in LIFE!

What Line?

I like the old Hammer II stuff. I have been hunting it for quite some time. Anyone who has ever hunted around here will tell you these dogs will compete with any man's hound. The phone used to ring non stop with folks coming to see if they had something better. It doesn't ring so much anymore.
But what makes me happy may not make you happy. Just enjoy what you like and breed the same. Twenty years from now we will all have a new arguement about which line.
I am hunting stock that is twenty years removed from the Hammer II blood. But it is still breeding true. If you have ever hunted with these hounds; that's what those early hounds were like also. It's not for everybody.
My stud carries Hammer II in his fourth generation. It still marks hounds out of him. I would have to call that reproducing. You just have to enjoy the one you hunt. So pick that rascal out and hunt the hair off him! Good Luck and Good Hunting. Harry.

I have heard all the talk about D.J. being half Walker. I have hunted with Jim Palmer on numerous ocassions. Jim owned D.J.'s mother. I visited with him as late as this past weekend at The Battle. The story of D.J. just does not add up as being half Walker. I was told that back when he was born, a previous litter by his mother was buck skin colored. I think if anyone will contact Mr. Palmer he can clear up any rumors. D.J. was hatched just North of the Red River in Southern Ok. And Voyd you are right about Cheif, I hunted against him several times. Joe Rember told me once that he wore out a new pickup trying to get a first. Cheif had something like 18 2nd place wins. But to his credit, when he was in the hunts there were more than 3 dogs showed up to hunt.

Perry thanks for the input. You are one of the few that really know what Spanky was,is and did. The comment that really made me laugh was the comment by Patti B,she said double up on Spanky and you get quiet track dogs ROFLMAO, it still makes me giggle. Obviously she has never hunted with a real Hammer bred dog. Dave Dean was cussed for years by the coonhound world for breeding mouthy dogs. He liked them to bark and so do I. I have doubled up on Spanky a good bit and you wont find any quiet dogs around here. Dave

THIS PUTER IS A GREAT TOOL FOR COMMUNICATION, BUT SOME OF THE STUFF THAT GETS BASICALLY REPEATED THAT PEOPLE HAVE JUST HEARD AND NEVER WITNESSED JUST BLOWS MY MIND. Spanky hunted in the Pa state hunt here in his prime and yes he was tight mouth that night and every one I ever quizzed on him told me the same.I was in no way bad mouthing Spanky.I was replying on a previous post.I would imagine that Perry would Know more about it then I and that he was a wide hard going dog .
Grayson Paul whom I respect told me the same thing and he told me he hunted with spanky a few times.
Incidently Grayson went hunting with my Punkin dog on a night hunt because she was getting a rep at that time and he wanted to see her go.I told him "Grayson you are not going to like her because she is not your type of dog", but he said he still wanted to she her in the woods.
After the hunt was over he said you are right she is not my type but she reminds me of the Spanky dog the way she hunts and runs and trees.
To me that was a great compliment comparing her to Spanky.
And she did win her cast that night.

READ MY POST!!! There is a big difference.
I hunted with lot of hammer dogs directly out of 5,8,9,10.
I also bred directly to his 9 dog.Yes ,I have hunted with real hammer dogs.The first dog I ever owned was line bred hammer 2 and I had a male out of the 9 cross that carried hammer 5 three times AND HE WAS TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT .No quit and hunted on a straight line.that is two traits I say you should not double up on as a honest to goodness breeder trying to improve the breed. MY OPINION !!!
You can't tree coons when you are hunting for dogs that aren't hunting with or for you.
I owned a male out of the 10 dog and the old grntch dusty dog also so don't tell me I never hunted with a real hammer dog.

Incidentally the double Hammer 2 female was wide open and a full brother I knew a guy had was stone SILENT not tight, not quiet, but SILENT.Also the triple hammer 5 male I had a friend had a full sister that was well balanced nice open dog.DIVERSITY is the answer.So I would not label Spanky dogs as all tight .So maybe yours is wide open.It is a trait I would be wary of[Tightness] when breeding too close.

No wonder the people that have other breeds that are reading these posts get a bad opinion of the bluetick people.Some of you guys think you have the greatest line there is and can't see past each lines faults. that's the difference between success breeders and some guy going and breeding his female to old handy without any fore thought
Until you can admit what needs watched for or fixing in each breeding your results will suffer.You have to eat,live,breath,with your dogs.This is something the Uchtmans and Dave Dean have done. 99% of the hunters that are breeding dogs don't have the time due to work or family or finances.
Just because you breed two dogs that are related that are great coon dogs does not mean you will get great dogs if you do not know their hidden unknown bred in weakness or faults that will surely manifest when line breeding.The quickest way if you want to find out is to inbreed them a couple times.the problem is and I repeat most guys just can't be honest enough to admit their dogs faults.
All any one has to do is look at how unknowledgable breeders all but ruined breeds every time they became popular.german shepards,dobermans,rotweilers,dalmations,etc.
Every body thinks doubling up is good tripling up is better and boy four or five times is great.Unless you know the dog you are trying to line breed onto to a fault thats what you will end up with unwanted faults.

After thought ....... Does any one have a recent P.A.D on Spanky?Just curious.

IF EVERYONE HUNTED THE SAME TYPE OF DOG, WHAT A BORING HUNT IT WOULD BE. THESE DOGS GET TIGHT ON A GOOD TRACK, THEY GET WISE TO THE FACT THAT THEY CAN CATCH HIM OR MAKE HIM CLIMB QUICKER THAT WAY. ANOTHER THING THAT I HAVE SEEN OUT OF THESE DOGS IS THAT SOME OF THEM WILL GO FROM HARD TREEDOGS AT A YOUNG AGE TO JUST STEADY AS SOON AS THEY LEARN THAT YOU WILL COME TO THAT JUST AS MUCH AS POUNDING 100 A MINUTE. THERE AGAIN I THINK THAT IT SHOWS BRAINS. NOT LAZIER IN HUNTING OR THEY WAY THEY GO ABOUT THINGS JUST SMARTER. I HAVE GROWN TO REALLY LIKE A SMART DOG THAT IS LEVEL HEADED WITH A PERSONALITY AS COMPARED TO THE OLD CLICHE OF THE KNOTHEADED HOUND WITH THE ONE TRACK MIND DRAGGING HIS ONWER THROUGH THE BRUSH MACH 8 AND NEEDING A BUTTERFLY NET TO CATCH HIM WHEN TURNED LOOSE. Patty I do know who you are and the many contributions you have made to the breed, and the many more with your Punkin dog. The only thing I can tell you is what I see right here at that old cabin in the woods. I dont see tight mouthed dogs period. I have also heard the "too tight" breeding issues for years. Until someone else produces 22 generations and thousands of first and second generation Nt Champs and Grand Nt champs I will stick with and take up for the hounds that have taught me the most.Patty what was the old Gr Nt Dusty dog bred like? I too owned one off Ten,guess what? He wasnt very "tight" with his mouth either.
Warren, shoot I dont know where the tight mouth comes from. All I am saying is there are six tight Spanky blooded hounds very near here and not one is what I would call tight on the ground. I have hunted with maybe three or four more that would be considered loose mouthed by todays standards. Maybe the wide open mouth here comes from the other side of the pedigree its all solid Hammer lol.
P.S. Patti, I am not a big time breeder nor do I have any resemblance of a line here. I am just an ole fur taker thats puts up a couple hundred hides a year and collects a few small trophy's along the way. I just drive down the road a piece and pick up a old blue hound from a small cabin in the woods. Dave
