-- UKC loses ST. JUDE WORLD’S LARGEST COON HUNT” EVENT (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=70437)

Lady

The way I understand this, it is just the Parsons, Tn "World's Largest Coon Hunt" that will be affected by this.

I hope everyone will donate too, if they don't come....if you don't trust AKC, then send it to St. Jude Hospital, although AKC doesn't handle the donations, our local Ass. does.

you boys maybe right about the message board. Seems the ones with the least to say talk the most. maybe i should just stay off hear and not readmost of this. its depressing to read some of the stuff these bottom feeders say. i have coonhunted alot of years and enjoy it for the most part but do not want to be associated with a sport if it has this many loosers in it. Its sad for the dying sport of coonhunting and they will nail the last nail in its coffen. seems no one is big enough to step back and shutup for good causes, even if the good cause is just coonhunting and not sick children.

If AKC was truly concerned about the St Jude Hospital. they would of just sent in a donation to it, not bought the St Jude Hunt.......... which is what they did. I sincerely hope everyone still turns out, and supports the hunt, but I just don't see it happening.
As for UKC, they are a top notch organazation, and I am sure they wish all the gang at the hunt the best.

The way I understand it and this comes from someone who Knows. AKC is going to let any Kennel Club registered dog (pkc, ukc, nkc, etc.) hunt in the ST JUDE hunt. You do not have to be AKC registered to hunt in it. If you win your cast or place in the hunt. You will have 30 days after the hunt to register your Dog if you want to recieve points toward a AKC title for your Dog.

They're Good People Working With The Coonhound Program At AKC And They Will Work Hard To Make The ST JUDE Hunt Grow

Thanks

Bought the St Jude? It called promoting. I'm sure the children will be proud off the extra $10,000 per year!

they are going to need that extra $10,000 to make up the difference.................

The St. Jude committee did indeed vote to change their hunt affiliation to the AKC. We wish the committee the best with their charity. The UKC had several opportunities to present our proposal and feel we made an excellent case for the hunt to remain with the UKC. We were invited to present our proposal in person to the committee but chose instead to donate our airplane fares and travel fees directly to St. Jude and mail our proposals to the committee members and follow up by telephone. The reason for this decision centered on an offer to the committee of a large sum of money from AKC’s New York City office to change affiliation.

We are not aware of any other time when a sum of money was used to persuade a club to change affiliations, but understand that the charity is the important issue and that the additional money will help the charity in the short-term. We remain strong in our belief, however, that the continuity and long-term benefits of the charity would have been better served with a robust and consistent UKC hunt.

In summary, the UKC declined to engage in a bidding war with another registry and decided to donate directly to the charity. While we deeply regret that the hunt has changed affiliation, we will continue to support the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at both a personal and corporate level and thank the committee for their consideration and time in making this difficult decision.

Wasn't there some sort of controversy concerning this group and hunting a few years back. My recollection is foggy but I believe one terminally ill child wished for some sort of hunt (bear or moose I think). They granted his wish but drew fire from several anti groups for doing so and as a result publicly disavowed hunting as an option in the future.

Could be Warrior. I don't know anything about that. There are plenty of good charities to support, St. Jude being one of them and we will continue to do so regardless of affiliation.

Posted by warrior on 11-16-2005 01:37 PM:

I agree

There are many good ones out there and I have no problem with the make a wish foundation. I can fully understand why they would want to get the antis off of their back (if it occurred as I recall) since they are not a party to our hunter vs anti fight. Joining our fight or even getting caught in the cross fire would be detrimental to their mission. Now if they used that event as cause to join the antis that would be another issue entirely. Overall it might be a good thing to contribute to the make a wish group if they are indeed a neutral party. We can use all the friends we can garner as it will be the non hunting middle ground voters that will eventually decide the fate of hunting in america.
The other thought that comes mind is the phrase charity begins at home. Maybe we could have a charity hunt to support the NRA, DU, NWTF or some agreed upon acceptable pro hunting organization.

Make A Wish Charity

I headed up a Make a Wish UKC Hunt and Show almost 20 years ago with my local club. We had a club member who's young son was terminally ill with a brain tumor. The support was tremendous and Make a Wish Foundation helped us carry out the boys Wish (which was a singer he wanted to meet and they came to his home.). We did an auction in conjunction with the event and it went over big too. Several County Music stars from Oklahoma even donated items to be auctioned. The money from the auction was given to his family for medical bills. Make A Wish is another great Charity that does some wonderful work for children who are terminally ill.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I support St Jde every month, but there are so many charities out there that would be so grateful for any help, count Mike and I in Allen if you come up with a hunt.

Shiners Hospital for Crippled Children

The State Coonhunters Assn of Missouri has raised and given over $100,000 dollars(Hospital Records) to this charity. Please consider them for future fund raising events.

Money may go to the wrong place...

Folks,

We never know exactly where the money goes in all cases - even donating to St. Jude. However, I will donate directly to St. Jude and NOT AKC. I am going to put my dollars where I believe they will do good, and AKC can go jump in the lake!

AKC has publicly stated that 100% of the proceeds will go to St Judes including the licensing and recording fees. But I'm sure someone will find something terrible about that.

Posted by warrior on 11-16-2005 06:28 PM:

JiM

Of course they are. What a way to engender AKC to the public and at the same time coerce coonhunters to play along with their so called registration scheme. For those who do not know NONE of our UKC coonhound breeds save the plott are considered legitimate breeds. Registry with the AKC is in their FSS category not the full breed registry. To make it even worse they refuse to accept our B&Ts as coonhounds wanting to call them treehounds or some such nonsense. What AKC calls a Black and Tan coonhound is all show and no go.
Oh don't think AKC can't afford to throw some money around at the St Judes hunt when they have a plan to make it all back. It's called PAWS and it is a nefarious scheme to force all of us to be licensed and inspected by the government. BTW guess who would be doing the inspecting for the government. You guessed it AKC for a fee of course.
