-- What is a fair price for a pup (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=51415)
sheepster that is the problem there are some great ones that would have made it but got killed and then you count ones in there that go to pleasure hunters also.
sorry redmanmi, you misunderstood me. I mean what about the Grand nite champs and nite champs that dont tree coons???

$300.00 is a fair price for a pup you described.
$300.00 stud fee
$70.00 ukc pkc reg. fee
$200.00 vet. visits, shots, dewormer, puppy food for 3 weeks or longer and if you place an ad in A. Cooner then add more
Oh! I forgot about the litters that you have to take a lose on just so people can see that the dam can help in the reproducing part of it too!!

hey sheep is there alot of them or is it just one or two. i think for the most part to be grand they had to tree a few coon
The most we have gotten for pups is 250.00 ea. and those were some of the first litters of Performance blues last year.
Unfortunately, 1 litter of 10 has only 3 alive now. The last one that died was treeing almost all alone at 6 months. We sold him since having 2 males with same Sire and he died.
The Performance sire we have now has top reproducers in his pedigree, the females we will breed to will be hunters, and he should mix well with any bloodline out there. These pups will sell for 200.00 ea. and hope they get in hands of competition hunters since performance pups.
If I wanted to make money as a breeder, I would have bred lap dogs, more money, less food to feed them.

redmanmi, I havent been with a whole lot of different dogs like some folks have. I have been with some dogs though. And I know of 2 grand nites and 2 nite champions that puzzle me as to how they got there degrees. I know of others that I only went with once or twice. But these I went with more than once. If I know of this many in just my tiny little corner of the world then how many are there like these out there that I've never seen?? I've been coonhunting 10 years now and I dont hunt with a whole lot of different people all the time.

Just all 'round , meat gettin' hounds.
My thoughts on this -- A pup is what a buyer is willing to pay for it . Take my lab pup for example I gave $1200 for him at 6 weeks old - He is bred right (FC AFC sire and Qualified All AGE MH HRCH dam) Now if he don't make it through training or doesn't turn out to be what I expect guess I'll just go back to the "pile" and try again - Heck I've owned several hounds with one being bred real nice but she didn't turn out to be worth a plug nickel -- SO now I'm on the hunt again for a hound that will trip my trigger so to speak - If i get it for 200 or 1200 who knows - It's all in how much someone wants to pay on a roll of the dice --- Like I said just my thoughts

Why ask if I hunt blues???? I hunt Walkers but the all time leading producer percentage wise of any of the 6 breeds is Sackett Jr. Sounds to me like you need to do some research before you ask a question like you did. Again I say when you buy a pup you are taking a chance. I am not willing to pay that much on a chance. I'll buy a started dog for $500 before I pay $300-$400 for a puppy.

Is your female all Grand? Is the male all Grand? How many good coonhounds has your dog thrown? Is the male a proven reproducer? Are you willing to spend tons on advertising and campaigning your dog?Are you in a location with alot of coonhunters? Are you a hunter that is well known in the coonhunting world? If you can't answer yes to everyone of these questions your pup is worth no more then $300.Of all the pups that are sold each year only a small percentage is sold for more then that.To get the crazy money ,anything over$500,you must have the nerve(not the word I wanted to use) to ask the price and someone stupid enough to pay it.Yes I think someone paying over $500 for a puppie is plain stupid. We cull thousands of pups a year, overpaying is ridiculous.A breeder with a good track record and one that has proven reproducers can ask $500 for a pup and I have no problem with someone paying it,but there are maybe 20 of those type breeders in the U.S.If you made the breeding to get coonhounds and to have a pup from your old female, then ask a fair price and hope the pups get in peoples hands that will hunt them.Whatever you ask for them goodluck!

O.K. guys, with reluctance for fear of OFFENDING someone, I'm gonna give a TRUE scenerio: Male dog A is of a line that CONSISTENTLY produces coon dogs, his now deceased older brother regularly treed coon that other Nt. Ch. were unaware existed. Can't count the times that he did this. Now there is another younger brother, Dog B, that with very little hunting has shown these very same Nt. Ch's. the same talent. Second time he was out w/one of the same dogs, he had a coon treed within 5 min.. The Nt. ch NEVER settled on the tree. Owner caught and tied him back. These type instances go back SEVERAL generations in this line.
NOW HERE'S THE "KICKER". A guy that hunts regularly with these dogs has booked TWO females to TWO different studs, one he states that he DOES NOT like and one to another that he has NEVER seen hunt. When asked the reasoning, his reply;"puppies are easier to sell and bring more from SS sires. His reasoning,
"These YOUNGER guys are only interested in SS pups.
Before hearing this I had a full head of hair, now. from scratching my head, trying to understand this, I have a few bald spots.
I SAY $300 IS A VERY FAIR PRICE FOR A HEALTHY, VET CHECKED WITH MEDS, WELL TAKING CARE OF, GOOD PAPERED PUP. I THINK YOU GOT SOME VERY GOOD ANSEWERS ON THIS. AND FROM SERIOUS PEOPLE WITH BRAINS ! UNFORTUNATLY I DID NOT. ASK THE SAME QUESTION YOU DID, SEE;

I have always heard that the pups should be priced the same as the stud fee. You pay $1000.00 for a stud fee, then it would be fair to ask $1000.00 for a pup. If you pay $200.00 for a stud fee, then it's fair to ask $200.00 for a pup. The fact that you drove 600 miles to breed to that stud, doesn't change the fact that the stud fee was $300.00. Again, here is in my opinion why coonhounds are cheap and boxers (or any other pet breed)are selling for $1000.00. Hunters buy coonhounds they want them to hunt and they know they don't all turn out, in fact you might have to buy 3 or 4 pups at $300.00 a piece to finally get one that you keep. People that buy boxers, like the looks of a boxer and that's all they care about, if it looks like a boxer then they got what they want. So they might be willing to pay $1000.00 to get the pet they want since they know that as long as they want a boxer for the next 8 to 12 years, they have one.
You can't really compare the price of coonhounds to the price of housedogs for several reasons.Alot of toy breeds only have one or two pups per litter, some require being born by c-section and others require specialized medical attention. The main reason you can not over charge is there are just tons more coonhounds being raised. Are the pups being sold for $1000 really that much better then the ones being sold for $300.Correct me if I am wrong, because I don't really read the ads that close, but have you ever seen a $1000 pup guaranteed?I have seen a ton of $300 pups guaranteed and I guarantee my pups that I sell for even less then that.

I selected $300, but that would only be for a pup that I was familiar with the entire pedigree going back at least 4 generations or was from a reputable long term linebreeder.
This will cause an uproar, but, my opinion of the reproducers list is very low. This list should be called the placement list. The outcome is much more influenced by the quality of female bred, the location of the pups (geographically), the training skills of the new owner, the philosophy of the owner, and a multitude of other factors.
So, when I look for pups, titles mean very little. I would much rather buy pups a little older, say 4 mos. that I can evaluate than select a "paper pup" that has a slim possibility of doing anything.
Of course my in my opinion there are only four reasons people cull pups-health issues, puchase mistakes, lazy training and a very distant 4th reason- a bum pup-no hunt, no voice, incurable shyness, or a slick treeing idiot.
I will pay for a pup with "the eye" long before a pup with an all grand pedigree.

i wouldnt buy an expensive pup unless the owner guaranteed them to run and tree. I am about to buy a great blooded pup for 200 dollars that is guaranteed.

You just mentioned driving 600 miles away and paying 300 for the stud fee, I wouldn't want one. [/B]
Those prices "could" be more than fair, depending on the pup. Some $500 pups are better bargains than some $100 pups.
But, in the end, a pup, or anything, is worth just exactly what someone will pay for it.

I agree with Bullet no pup is worth over 200 regardless what they are out. There is one thing for certain if you do not put them in good hands chances are they will never make it.I would rather sell one cheaper and in good hands than to sell one to someone who will not hunt or does not know how to start a pup.

Ive been selling coonhound's for a long time and have had guy's drive two or three states away show up look the pup's over than
ask me if I wold take 50.00 buck's a pup and get mad at me when Isaid no and that I told them that the pup's were 300 before thay made the drive .after you factor in stud fee's ,shot's ,feed ,houseing ,vet care for the female and the pup's and my time at 300 a pup I figure might make 25 buck's a pup if I'am lucky if I factored in the agravation of trying to sell them to people that would hunt them I would be losing money .

Don't feel like the lone ranger have had the same thing happen many times if I didn't love the sport and my dog's Icouldn't stand doing it the money is a joke and you soon learn just how many rude, mean nasty and out right crooked poeple thier are in the world on the up side some of the best folk's I know I met while hunting or through the dogs so hope for the best and expect the worst.

I agree with the folks that say 300-400 my reason for this is there is no guarantee some pups just dont make coondogs no matter how much training they are given. For 1000 they better run and tree right out of the womb. There are way to many pups being bred by guys who are in it for the money these big dollar handlers or rich guys who are buying dogs as investments are making it hard for us poor just plain coonhunters. If I was in it for the money Id definatly given up by now.
