You won't believe this. At least I couldn't. A guy came to try out a crossbred cur that I am the one crossbred. I did it on purpose. Wasn't an accidental nothing about it. I sent video. the price was $1200. The pup treed a coon. Happy go lucky sales man me said Let's see if he can do it again and he did , an hour into it. So I said lets see if he can do it again. and we killed the third coon. By then you know I am thinking I got too cheap a price on this pup. Guess what? that stupid Moran offered me $500 for that pup. Might as well have spit in my eye something BS about a half breed . You think buyers can get ticked wandering aroung searching for something for nothing on gass money?, I think I plumb embarrassed that duffus offering me $500. I hope I never see him again neither.
This is my question? Why would anybody make an offer on a dog if it was a dog that had flaws that they did not like. I would not offer a penny on a pup with flaws but a pup that is started and is being sold as such is NOT flawed GET IT? I see potential when I buy a pup, not looking for potential to jeww a fellow down with or I would never offer him a penny.

i got ripped off when i was a teenager from some older guys, so i only will buy pups now and its worked out pretty good for me. i love training young dogs a lot more than hunting a finish dog, even though i dont know if you call what i do is training them, i pet em when they do good and let em know when they do bad and try to hunt em all they can stand.

This is a good thread...

And I can see it from the buyers and sellers point of view. I have spent quite a bit of time looking at a bunch of sorry dogs...and gone through a few myself. Well, I was lucky enough to get to hunt with a great guy who I now consider a friend and a kind of mentor...even though he does not know it. Well, he had a great 6 year old redtick male..that dog just got it done! He hunted well with young dogs, was great in the yard, always had a coon! After hunting a few times and seeing that this dog was a positive influence on my younger walker I made an offer. At first it was turned down...but a couple weeks later I got a call with a counter offer. I now own this dog and it will never leave my kennel! And it was good for both of us as he still gets to hunt with this dog when we turn out together! But I didn't low ball him, or otherwise insult him with my initial offer. A good dog is gonna cost...that is plain and simple!! If I was selling this dog and someone tried to lowball me with an offer I would be really ticked off. So I can see both sides of the fence with that. So I agree with the other guys that said that you find the best dogs by hunting with folks...and making an offer..worst they can say i no...unless you try to lowball them

Another thing...if you read these threads..it seems like every dog bred is running and treeing at 5 months old. People brag up their dogs so much it makes me sick!! But this can not be the truth..simple supply and demand says so. If there were so many pups doing this it would be easy to get one and the price would not be that high..but since a good started 12 month old dog is worth at least $1200 in my book then that tells me that there are not as many world class pups out there...because when folks have a real nice dog.. they don't sell it!

All I can say is good luck to all looking for a nice dog. And for those guys who would shaft a kid...get a life!

Suggestion

It would be wise before you get into the market for a hound or dog of anykind to formilurise your self with the people that are selling. Go to some of the hunts and visit with them and the people that they hunt with. even go on some cast if you can to juge for your self some of the Calabor of dogs in the area, most folks in local areas know all the coon hunters and know what they have to offer, thats just a suggestion. sure you will spend money on gas going to the hunts but atleast you will learn some valued info and will save you alot of stress as well dealing with shady pedlers. jmop

what is funny to me is people that want to run a person down because they didnt get a world champion when they bought a dog off the chain like the big rig guy who wont post his real name but dont care to post the guys name he got dog from.i have got alot of dogs from same guy several times and never felt like i was sterred wrong.try before you buy if you cant aford to to buy of chain and loose.

What kills me is when people expect a world beater without wearing a few pairs of boots out.

My fiance asked me why I go hunting so much? I said when you played softball did you want to be the best or were you satisfied sitting the bench?

The only way to have something special is to put the time it takes into it.

Also its very hard to judge a dog based on 1 or 2 appearences. I went with a friend last night with my Ike dog. First cut he got struck and treed deep and he was slick. Keep in mind he hasn't missed while pleasure hunting in a month. He was 30 for 30 and he's 15 months old. Point is if I was trying to sell him for what he's worth (which is alot) a guy would have most likely called me a moron for wanting so much and been ticked I waisted his time.

As goes with anything there are some sure enough low lifes in this sport but the dog traders are pretrty easy to spot. And yes MANY don't know what a dog should be because they have never owned a consistant coon treer.

my name is Jerrod english!!!!!! I'm 27 now & the dog he told me could tree coons couldn't even run a track it just ran back & forth barking cuz it couldn't move it forward. $1500to a 16yr boy the dog should have treed easy coons atleast heck u coul drop dog out on a coon & 2 hours later he would still be n the road ditch he had no clue the coon ran off!!! This dog was registered in some elses name when jack sold him to me so I looked that man up & he told me he gave the dog to mr coomer cuz it was a cull!!! I have seen mr coomer at the parson TN hunt a few time he was then selling dogs also I just walked right on by & also warned a few people of how he done me. My opionon now is the people that buy a dog & hunt it thru the winter then sale it & buy another the next fall these type people r hunting dogs that didn't please ther original owner other words y'all got some bodys left overs

The real good dogs are almost never for sale. If they do come up for sale they will not have to advertise them to get rid of them. If you want a good dog that suits you you can do 1 of 2 things.. You can buy you a pup and train it how you want it or find you a good dog that you like and buy it even if "its not for sale". My experience is if you start a pup by the time you get it like you want it you'll have$4,000 or so in it or you can find a good dog thats not for sale and usually get it for 4 or $5,000 unless its already established a career is winning. Thanks Jon Millwood

i've never known it to be any different than it is right now. it's the same with buying a horse or a car or a lot of other things. who can tell what evil is in a man's heart? like someone posted earlier, go to local hunts, get to know the local hunters and keep your eye out for a dog you like and make an offer. a lot of times people will tell you of a freind of their's that has a dog. i prefer just reading the classifieds and thinking about buying a dog. it's safe now because i don't have room for another pet or cull.
