They did not catch me, they pay the land owners then they dont want anyone in there. I was told "the dogs scare away the deer" The land owners like the $$ until they see what the coon are doing to there corn, then I get a phone call to come and "thin them out a little" I say sorry you dont want me in there the deer hunters should thin them out for ya!

I got her from Lamar Meeks last Aug. Her name is Uni. She's a red merle. I haven't had neither dog out in about two months.
Uni will get after a ground coon. She hasn't struck on track or tree yet. She'll be a year old in July.
I think Pike was a red merle, had some funky eyes, and a head the size of a pumpkin!
Josh,
Hows that pup doing I foolishy passed on?

Carl - I enjoy hunting with all breeds. I'll give you a shout this week or next.

Dave - I took a job with an energy company called SPX, and am helping to lead a transformer business they have up here. Indiana will be missed, but I'll be back from time to time. I'm even keeping my property down by Monterey. Take care!

Thanks!

Alright... I made it home over the weekend and grabbed my boots and light, before I came back up. If anyone is going out this week, and don't mind a tag-along, give me a shout.

Weekends won't work though, as I'm still heading home each Friday to see the family and mow the yard!

Thanks!

I was checking on the map, and Seneca and Bristol are a bit far. Maybe not on a weekend, but during a work week, with it getting dark as late as it does.

Has anyone ever hunted that huge piece of public land in the town of Valley near Rockton ,Wi? I used to turkey hunt down there before I got my English coonhounds. I might head down that way this fall and try some coonhunting. Lots of mature hardwoods and lots of hills.

Posted by CARL GUDGEON on 07-08-2012 08:05 PM:

public land

I have hunted over some. The land was given back to the Indians so you have to get a permit or sticker or something that tells them you are in there or something like that. It is call the Kickapoo Reserve now.

I had no idea that it is an indian reservation now. Was there much for coon in there when you ran there and if you don't mind me asking how long ago was it that you ran there?

Posted by CARL GUDGEON on 07-08-2012 10:51 PM:

hunting

It's been a few years its big country with alot of rock buffs along the kickapoo but planning on going back soon. There is alot of big den trees but if you have a hard hunting dog you will need a Garmin. But i think it is good hunting.

I've turkey hunted most of that about 15 years ago. I do remember it being bluffy country. I always thought it was a gorgeous place to hunt. I live around Merrill, Wi and we don't have any country that looks like that. Most of our country is mostly flat with alot of timber and thin coon. It's prolly about 2 1/2 hrs south west of where I live. I was thinking that I'd try running there a couple of weekends this year. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how to get a permit to be able to run my young hound there. Would like to try a spot like that where I could maybe get several trees in one night. Thanks.

I see a lot of what we would call "state ground", back in Indiana, around here. I've checked the DNR website, but that's pretty complex. Is there an easier way to determine what ground you can or cannot coon hunt, and what time of year?

There appears to be different type of ground that allows different types of use and/or hunting. Some does or does not allow dogs and some allows dogs but has leash requirements certain times of the year. I thought I was fairly smart, but it had my head spinning.

I called a gal at the DNR, but I think she was more confused than I was. Espeically when I asked about "running" dogs instead of hunting them!

Dave

Most lands in Wisconsin have a law where a dog has to be on a leash from April 1 to July 1. I just called today about the reserve around rockton and they told me it opens on July 31 for training on that piece of ground. I know what you mean when you call the dnr and they sometimes seems more confused than you are because I've had the same thing. If you tell them dog training sometimes they might know what your talking about alittle more. Good luck. Joe Brzezinski
