You can hang 5 beep collars on your truck and want beat the garmin out. Ain't happening.lol.. I found my dog one night with the QT. He was 30 yards up in a hole off the creek. Was maybe 3 feet down. I turned it down and pin pointed him exactly. Dug down and pulled his limp body out. He finally came back around. That's about the only advantage I see on em. I don't think the garmin could do it but I try and break mine from holes anyhow. 84 times outta a 100. Nothing good comes from them.

In reply to Ga Dawg: If your dog loses signal, it will show a ? where the signal was lost. If you are in a hunt and can't have it on, keep your old 220 that is only worth a couple hundred and put it on the dash.

I know it would show a ? But Id just know where he went in at. It wouldn't pin point him like the old one did but I've only done that once. I've had to pull around to a paved rd a few times and cut dogs off. To me that's a good trade off lol. I mean Id have known they were headed toward rd with old collar. Now I know that and how close they are and exactly where they are going to come out at. No telling how many dog lives the garmin has saved. May be just mine but I doubt it

You can't justify the difference between a garmin and telemetry with real math .... but , it's just a hobby and you don't have to ... just buy a garmin because you want one and everyone's happy.
Hunting dogs have a dangerous job and can't always be under our thumb ... they have to learn the ropes and get with the program to be top tier , chasing them around with a garmin won't make a dog or hunter better skilled ..... it's just another step in taking the human element and sense of accomplishment out of something .
I can see the need for them if you are older and just can't hear or do things like you used to ... but other than that , it's a luxury itemn ... not a necessity.
I'm impressed with guys that can still shoot a squirrel in the head with open sights ... not off a tripod with a scoped .
I'm impressed with detailers or drafters that still know how to detail by hand and can do the math without autocad .. those people are impressive ... not the ones that can't tell you jack crap unless it's on their computer screen.
A garmin is good for dogs and hunters who both lack natural talent .... but they rob both participants of what makes hunting fun ....
I don't want to know what is over the next hill , I want to explore it for myself ..... I don't want to know how far the dog is , I wanna use my judgement and guess and if I'm right ....it feels good.
Stuff like that is in our genes , it's what defines most men .... for the ones without it ... there is Garmin , lol.
Ain't no wonder our sport is dieing.
Folks think they have to have thousands worth of equipment BEFORE they even get a dog. LOL
What ever happened to being a true "houndsman"?
Or a true "outdoorsman"?
It's really kinda funny when you go hunting with someone and YOU have to tell Them when "their" dog is locating ! Or hung up at a fence. Or barking at the water because he's afraid to cross it. LOL

You are right, I hadn't seen or heard much about garmins and wanted to start this thread to see if there was any justification in spending the cash on one. I can't see where I'd gain an ounce more advantage. And hunting is already too full of advantages that sometimes takes the pleasure out of things. I'll be sticking with my wildlife materials like I have the last 15 years for the simple fact it has literally saved more than one of my dogs when they were truly in a life threatening bind, recovered fallen old warriors when they ran there last step and brought my tired wet butt out on more than one occasion. Coon dogs are what I have and coon dogs are what i enjoy without all the newest and greatest. Thanks guys for all your advice. God bless you each one.

I would not go hunting if i didn't have my gps. The old style seems to track a lot farther for me but the benefits of the gps are well worth it. You can tell if there is a road near your dog, if he's treed, where exactly he is, the exact distance from you and its easier to tell when they are running trash. I run both collars that way if he gets to far for the gps to track him i just pull out the beep beep.

the biggest problem i have seen is most hunters now days have a 400 dollar light, 600 dollar tracking system, 150 dollar boots, 500 dollar box, and a 50 dollar dog. i hunted when we did not have trackers of any kind. we had coon dogs that got treed and if you did have a bad night, ol well they would turn up in the morning. now days we have guys in the magazines being sponsored by these different companies. Some of these guys look like golfers with all the logos they wear. ITS COON HUNTING.

You can take a garmin and use it as a great training tool. It will save more dogs than the beep beep ever could. No guessing you know exactly where the dog is.
You know if the dog that is out of the light is hunting or lollygaging. You can go right to where a dog did something quizzical and investigate. Can't do that with the beep beep or by experience cause you can't tell close enough to where the dog was to ever figgure anything out.
A Garmin is a very good tool for a houndsman. Doesn't make you less of one to use it any more than using a cellphone makes you less of a friend than using the home phone.

I started this thread with the intent of gaining some info on a piece of equipment that I had no experience with. I thank everyone that provided useful info so I could make a decision as to what will suit me best and spending the cash on a Garmin can't be JUSTIFIED by me at this time.@ dirt devil, make up your mind. Either the Garmin is the greatest thing in the world or it's robbing you of your hunting experience. And how exactly would me buying a Garmin make everyone happy, I don't care about making you happy or anyone else. Thanks again to all the guys that provided positive input on the topic.
