I've always fussed over my dogs.. I probably spend an hour or so with the dogs every day in addition to feeding.. I check teeth, ears, see if anyone is coming into heat etc.. They all like to be petted and fussed over.. All of them were raised in the house and then moved outdoors when they started hunting..

That being said, I have no problem culling one that was raised in the house and fussed over.. I run a tight ship with my crew of dogs.. I'm the boss and they better listen..

I don't pet them up much at the tree.. Just usually a pat on the side and a "good dog" is all they get.. Generally on the way out from the tree is when I tell them how I think they did for me.. They are always so happy when I get to the tree anyways, that they don't care if I pet them up while they are treeing.. They aim to please me and will give me 100% when I collar them up..

I have had a lot of complements on how my dogs handle.. When I whistle they all come running like a yard dog (or even better) they all wait to come out of the dogbox until their name is called and come off the tree without a leash..

My dogs are friendly and want to petted and fussed over... I have found my line of dogs seem to do better with people who will make friends with them versus just hunt and feed them..

For me the petting and fussing works.. I don't know how much fun hunting would be for me if I wasn't buddies with my hunting partners..

"Petting" works wonders to get me in the mood.

I hunted a young dog for a friend tonight. Dog is about 14 months old. Lives in the house with several kids that hang all over her. Sleeps on the sofa. SOmeone is always petting this dog.
CUt loose about 8. Dogs headed up through the timber half a mile, my older GrNite pulled up under a coon. Young dog went on. Cut older dog loose. Dogs hunted another hour before old dog got treed. Young one stayed out. Went another hour before they both got treed together. Treed every breathe til I got there -10 minutes?
3 hours of hunting. Never came in. I got near her a few times hoping she would come out and we could move to a fresh woods. No quit in this young dog.
Last week we were tapping maple trees in the same woods. In the daytime she hangs out all day while we work. Sleeps under a tree rather than head up to the house.

Depends on the dog I'd say. Fred Bearwould rather me pat him on the side than shoot him a coon. He aims to please and trees coons for me and not himself ...

I dont pat a dog down on the tree. I pull them off the tree walk them then pat em on the side. If theres a coon

I work with my young dogs pet them when they come to me, maybe give them a treat. I might let my pup come in the house, from what I can see it doesnt hinder their hunting, that drive is breed into them. I've noticed that all my dogs want to make me happy, and they also mind, listen very well and very well mannered.

But you cant get too attach to a dog because if they loved you like you loved them they wouldnt tree slicks or possums..

Keep hunting him pet him up when he does good, but not too much because they'll start getting excited at the tree and start jumping or dancing around the tree and thta only leads to trouble.

I think petting serves a good purpose, as long as you don't pet them for everything. They should know that whipping, shocking, or being yelled at, means they did something wrong, and petting and praise means they've done something right.
