-- hunting a dog alone (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=482056)

hunting a dog alone is very important in finishing the dog into a complete coon dog. But I have seen some dogs who where hunted alone so much that when another dog was put in the mix the LONER could not hold pressure because it was never hunted with any other dogs. If a dog has never had pressure applied how can you know what it would do in those situations. I think a coon dog should be hunted with other dogs through out its training so it can learn how to get ALONE and stay under pressure. JMO.....but yes a dog needs to be able to tree coon alone or in company. preferred alone.

Bobby, Me too babble mouths beat the real coondog almost always. Everyone knows that, when the dog treeing coon withdraws well guess what the me too dog never gets treed again. Perfect exsample I hunted the zone a few yrs back. I had a bad 1st drop my dog got out of the pocket across a rd and down a fence row. The other 3 dogs got treed in front of us they had a coon. I called time out to get mine he had a coon but couldn't score it. After that they stayed together as mine slammed coon after coon. The me too dog won with 1225, I just couldn't make upfor that 1st coon. My dog had every 1st tree but the 1st one were he got alone and couldn't score. The dog that won the cast never had a 1st tree. Low and behold he was the only dog that yr that did not tree a coon in 2 hrs when he had to hunt alone at the world.

I understand what your are saying, but totally disagree with you saying that that type of dog almost always beats the coondog and everyone knows it. Everyone don't know it. Try to tell that to some of the top money winning handlers of PKC. Bet you won't get many to agree with you. I hunt somewhere every weekend. I am not someone who just goes to the local club. Been at this for along time.
I was beat this year by a dog like you described, in the Wensday late round of the world hunt. We treed 10 coons. Strangle Hold had 6 first trees. Shacks Pepper female treed the other four. Guess what, I never won. I lost by 75+. The dog that had almost every first strike and almost every second tree won. He truly did nothing but dog trail and back just like you described. So it does happen. But i totally disagree that it almost always beats the coondog. If I hadn't made a bad call, which cost me 100-, I would of won anyway. But as you said earlier, it's hard to make up with a dog like that in the cast. But, the coondog will prevail most of the time, if he has a good handler. LOL JMO

I'll be honest, the me too dog has never bothered me. The ones I hate to draw are the auto strike dogs that are also coon treeing machines. Them are the ones that are tough to beat. It seems like that is what everyone is trying to hunt in the hunts these days. Draw out with a dog that gets out there 50 yards and starts ghost trailing thru the country until he finds a coontrack. Now, you have found one that is very hard to beat. Two major stud dogs, prolly more, are throwing this trait to there pups. Most that breed to them don't have a clue to what they are breeding to. Alot know and that is why they are breeding to them. It's that win at any cost that will make alot of sorry dogs. Again, JMO

Bobby, I Know what stud dogs your talking about I live in the heart of $kc land in OH. I see these dogs all week. Plus in the middle of coon country don't help. Thats why the good honest coondogs in my area don't win as much as the "other" type. Dogs from the south don't do as well here although I have hunted with several in the past yr. that are nice hounds. Its hard to win with them because they like to get alone to a falt. Last strike and a mile in the country hurts you when a dog can stay in one woods and get treed with a coon 2 or 3 times. The dog I will be pushing this yr is an honest 1st strike dog that will flat out slam coon on you. But he will cover a dog faster than you can tree yours too. He can grub up a track if he has to as well and not take all nite. He uaslly ends the nite with a split tree or two after he settles down. He is a comp style dog and a ton of fun to hunt as a 2 yr old. But he has his holes as all dogs do, and thats why he gets hunted all week long alone working on getting him better at what he struggles with.
