-- What do you consider DEEP HUNTING? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=466993)

Posted by jculler8 on 12-09-2011 10:48 PM:

When Belle is hunted up, she will be at .6 on the Garmin usually in about 10 minutes. It sucks. Whether you gotta drive around or hoof it, it isn't fun. I don't know anyone that enjoys going to a dog treed over a mile away EVERY drop. If the dog is a mile on the Garmin, that means you are walking ATLEAST 2-3 just to him... atleast in the woods around here.

Bottom line, that's 1 dump a nite if you've got any kind of job. lol

I don't think in terms of close, medium or deep. I think more in terms of busy, smart and "one way".

I'd say probably the same if I had to classify them.

That's a good way to think about it...

if they go over a mile in my part, that means they're crossing roads. they don't go for a mile and strike here. alot of people are fooled by their dogs or they're afraid to amit it, when a dog strikes say 500yds. and end up treed over a mile, they're not or did'nt run a coon. i can see down south where the dogs has to go hunting to strike a coon, but in the north, it's way different.

deep hunters are pain in anyone's a@%$%$ No offense

you guys with your Bee Liners amaze me no offense!!!...why would you want a hound shooting threw the woods or better yet past multiple coon and spending and wasting time looking for them.and better yet have a chance of them getting hit on the road!!.your Dog hunting now and then there more prone to getting hit by vehicles.here in Mass where the woods are small they have a better chance of getting smashed on the road.my friends dog who is advertised at stud on here use to hunt like that.when he got hit by a truck i think a light went off in his head!.Hunt medium and if i dont find nothing were moving elsewhere and if that dont work after multiple drops its bedtime.i just hate dog hunting folks......im sorry if i offend anyone. takecare theo

Close,Medium and Deep

JMO, but i'd consider a dog that hunts 1/4 mile or less a close hunter.1/4 to 1/2 a mile a medium and a 1/2 mile on out a deep hunter around here anyways.Like other places depending on where you hunt if a hound consistantly travels a mile in any direction its either crossing highways or getting far enough back into the government woods that its gonna take ya a long time to get to em treed. And your gonna be crossing creeks and or small rivers on your way.Not to mention lots of ridges, hollers and hills.I think the Garmin has made it alot easier to hunt a go yonder type of hound. Before they came out ive hunted a few that I never knew where they were 1/2 of the time. They might be treed somewhere but it did'nt do me or them much good if they were out a hearin before they struck a coon.I never liked standing around for an hour or so waiting on a dog to open when it had already got out of hearing and got struck.BUT, to each his or her own liking.I know different terrain and coon population makes a big difference in the way we all hunt.

coons left up & dogs passed

Some dogs go deep cause they CAIN'T smell the ones that are sittting up To me I want one that CAN work a cold track too. These hot nose dogs are no more than a started dog.

Posted by darwin barber on 12-10-2011 06:01 PM:

well till u hunt the same country and the after effects of a ice storm and lil ole floods u will c wat kind of dog u got even if they strike close and hot they got 2 work and work hard n they got 2 keep moving over tree tops under root wads in stuff we got 2 crawl under just 2 get to them yea u cant judge sumone eles dog cause it takes a mile or 2 just 2 see hair walk with them boys yea i gripe but we dont hav mountains thats coon dog go ever how far or work hard just to tree one

Theres a HUGE difference between a dog that hunts deep and a dog that bee lines thru the country! 1st of all the bee liners usually aint hunting deep, theyre just running wide open until their brain kicks in and tells them to slow down and start huntin. Dogs that actually hunt deep just keep going until they can get struck. Most dogs that are 1/2 - 1 mile in 5 minutes or less aint huntin, theyre just running. I know a few that can actually hunt that fast, but very few. And regardless of how they hunt, mine better not come back to me at all unless I call him in! The only way I wanna catch mine is off a tree.

JMO

Now that i enjoy close hunting dogs ...inow wonder how many my wide hunters passed up....

Posted by RHK on 12-10-2011 08:26 PM:

the little dog im huntin now will tree coon no matter where they are. even if they are behind me, below me or wherever. i have killed a very substantial number of coon this year. id say 80% are under 150 yards. i got so sick of turning my walkers loose and walking past 3 or 4 coon to get to 1 tree. anyway, if i do the math on my close huntin cur dog his percentage is well over 90% accurate. the few that he has missed were very questionable also. no i dont have the best dog. hell hes not even that good but he hunts great in ohio. there is no need to have a dog that trees a mile away. unless your a guy that just likes to walk, or likes to brag about how far ol yonder got treed last night. there are too many coon around here for that.

Posted by Jason Baldwin on 12-10-2011 08:28 PM:

When i cut mine i want dirt slung in my face and i dont want to see him again till hes under a coon and he better not stop running full out till hes 600 yards in. !!!!!!

Yes and they dont require puppy shots or ever get sick either !

these last few nights have been really cold for here and bright and mine have been going deeper than i like... usually from a 1000 yds to 3/4 mile before they open.... on a good night i usually tree a couple before getting that deep

Posted by WattsFlatsRedbo on 12-10-2011 11:26 PM:

Close, Medium, Wide and Deep. Lol. If I'm feeding them they need to be all of em. They better tree the close ones and take the tracks that come to them, but on the same hand be able to cover some ground fast head up and running looking to wind one. I consider a deep hunter to be one that goes until they find a coon most times, no matter how deep in they get. Sometimes my dogs will blow up a tree right in front of me and other times they have to get a mile into the woods before they find one.
Also for folks who think that just because you live up north that the coon are thick thats not allways true. Most times your gonna have to have a dog that will go deep just to find a coon in the these hills or mountains. Now that the snow is starting to fly around here the coon arent moving much. Just the other night I pulled my dogs off a den tree almost a mile and a half in according to the Garmin (which lost communication with the dogs a number of times). No driving around to get closer in some of these big woods I hunt. A mile and a half walk straight through the timber was as good as it gets. I think I crossed the same big revene atleast 4 times each way. Lol.

i disagree i live bout far north as u can go. i live in NY and i got to drive 2 hrs away to get into thick coon country. where i live dogs got to get deep to strike a track.

I dont mind my dog hunting in strait lines. When its really cold and only when its below 20 my dog will run a strait line up one side of the woods and then come back to me on the other side of the woods. smart dog finds the coon when the coon arent running well.

Before garmins

How did you know if you had a COONDOG???

I don't care the yardage as long as they go far as it takes to get a coon treed. Personally if they hunt out more than a half mile and can't get struck, I'd rather try another timber lol.
With that being said HUNTING OUT 1/2 MILE is way different than a straight line idiot that road races alone or with company waiting for a hot track to pop a coon up.

If they're using their mouth they better get treed legitimately!

If I wanted an exercise program I'd join the Y!
