Trespassing

"Hey I've read that in some states you can get a trespassing ticket FOR YOUR DOG going across the property line.

That's right, even if you never left property you had permission to be on if your dog ran a race that went off that property, but you never left that property, they can fine you for your dog "tresspassing".

Now that's a crock right there."

while deer hunting yesterday i had a run in with the game warden cause i might be about 4 feet off the property line where i was hunting in my blind they marked my spot on gps and went to see if i was on the property i had permission for they are going to call me to notify me if i was tresspassing or not and if i do get charges i will b fighting it there is no sighn no fence no property marker nothing i mean i was grass field i just wen by what the land owner said how the hell was i supposed to know i was off 5 feet!!!

gps can be off by as much as 90 ft. or more too.
example; was out hunting.garmin showed dogs had crossed a normal sized river and were treed{not moving/fixed location}.got closer they were'nt even close to being across.

I'm pretty sure you don't have the right to retrieve in Indiana.

I've always heard that to get in trouble for trespassing the land has to be posted. Again I don't know if there's any truth to that.

Get permission before you enter property that you do not have permission to hunt on. I have found that the best time to do this is before there is a problem. If I get permission to hunt one place I look at my platt book and contact the surrounding landowners. It goes much smoother when it is in the afternoon rather than 1230 in the morning with their dogs going nuts and all the ruckus.

The way I handle these things:

I respond to the call. If landowners won't grant permission for the hunter to retrieve his dog, I ask the owner if he is accepting responsibility for the dog. I document the answer and then advise him the average price of a broke coonhound. I have yet to meet a landowner that does not want the dog off their property.

By the way who was the C.O. on the board of directors up in Rochester, IN?

In IL you can't get in trouble for a dog getting onto someone's property, but you DO NOT have the right to retrieve without permission from the landowner. I usually do like Rowdy said and talk to surrounding landowners before hunting and tell them what I drive and where I park when hunting on neighboring properties. Then, if they hear a ruckus and want to check it out, they can just drive down the road and verify whether my truck is there or not.
If the neighboring landowner doesn't give me permission to retrieve my dog and the dog gets on his property, then I do what some others have said, leave the gun and anything else (except a lead), turn off my light and get to the dog quick and get out quick.
Maybe I'm a scaredy cat, wuss, but sure sounds better than those $375 tickets you guys are talking about.

last yr i was hunting public land and my dog got deep and treed on private land well i am in the middle of no where and i made the choice to got get my dog i will do it again but anyway i went and got him well i didnt no he was that close to a camphouse i just went got him and was gonna leave well i get up there and the land owner meets me at the tree and starts blessing me out he done called the game warden and i got a ticket and i told them all i was doin was getting my dog off the tree well that didnt matter i got the ticket paid it 300 hundred dollars well it could have been worse i did have my gun with me which could have made that much more expensive but any ways during the summer i saw him in the parts house and i apoligized to him for what i did and do you know he gave me written permission to hunt his land after deer season he said he thought about it and felt bad for doin that
