slick treeing

I have seen this in some dogs over the years. If you have been hunting them all summer and not giving them any coon and then when season comes you start kncking coons out they get the idea any tree with scent on it holds a coon there for they lock up on tapped trees. All you have to do is pull them off a few trees if that don't work cut a switch and run off, if their smart they will figure it out fast. If they quit treeing than you didn't have a tree dog to start with.

LMAO..... I would agree if they were that kind of dog BUT if they have been doing good and developed a problem and you shoot every dog that had a hole in it instead of fixing it You would have to shoot about all the dogs.
Somthing caused the problem and somthing will fix it BUT if I can't fix it. THEN YEP THAT IS WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH IT.

My first question would be, what is the temperature, and is there frost where you live? I don't know if this is the problem, but I would consider the tracking ability of the dog during the summer and fall and now that it is colder and tracks are more difficult to tree. I would question the dogs ability to track, hunt him with a dog in your area that can tree a coon consistantly now and see how he operates. If he doesn't have enough tracking ability he will continue to tree slick while the other dog goes on and trees the coon. If he trees slick, let him know that you are displeased, lead him to the treed dog with the coon, tie him back where he can easily see what is going on at the tree. Let the treed dog have the coon and praise him lavishly. Do not let the other dog have a hold of the coon, not even by accident. Go back to the truck and drive to a new location and repeat the process. It may work, it may not, but it takes time. I over- hauled a female like this from a northern state; she was used to "possom treeing" coon and didn't want to track, just tree. She finally came around and placed in the top ten of a world hunt. Tom

Thanks Tom, I will give it a shot after deer season so I can get back to more places to hunt.

its the tanic acid effect, thats what i use for an excuse!!LOL soon as the ground freezes they'll start getting it right again.

I just love these slick treeing threads. According to some, I should have shot the best two dogs I ever trained.

Yep they allways turn into a people\ breed bashing thread. I don't have any problem shooting a sory dog BUT I am going to see if I can fix it first. A lot of things can mess a dog up for a while. And the breed thing I have about as much tolerance for that as prejudice ignorance.
I have been around enough people and dogs to have seen good and bad in both and trying to figure percentages is for the foolish.

Sinus Problem?

One cure that some have used is to give the dog a sinus Clariton clear pill!It may be his sinuses acting up that has caused him to slick tree! Believe it or not, but it has corrected some slick treeers!

but these high powered dogs will tree 150 barks a minute and babble right off the leash every drop ! Wasn't that the goal all along? lol

I don't know about 150 barks a minute. The squeky tonge is the old dog. The steady chop is an almost 5 month old pup that was not treeing, he was just "monkey see monkey do" babling at the tree for the first time. I had my mind on looking for the coon and did not realize he was barking untill I watched the video. LOL. I don't mind them, in fact I expect them, to learn as much as they can from a trained dog. I bet he won't be a babbler but I shure hope he trees that hard when he gets it figured out. I won't even mention what breed it is so maybe I can stay out of trouble.

did you find the coon sound to me like a cur dog yappin lol

Posted by l.lyle on 11-30-2011 02:27 AM:

Yes I Killed the coon. I think that is why I find so many coons is because if they look they are dead. They don't get treed over and over and learn how to not look. LOL
I was hoping you could hear the chop tongue pup in the background. He doesn't sound like a cur to me. No matter though, they were all called curs till about three years ago. Now they are called hounds. That little fellow chopped out 100 barks in that 46 second clip by my count.

dont matter what they call them as long as they tree coons and more coons

Leaves off or on. Clariton makes me lazy, sleepy and even more no account. I can't even smell better on it. The only way I smell better is take a shower in perfumed soap they call Bodywash these days.
