Yes, the multiplication comes up a penny off but you can't take the fact there is three people involved and make it come out exact. It would be like taking a nickel and telling six people to divide it between them!

You are leaving out the step where they actually got more than $1 in change. Between that fact and the fact you are not doing the "long math" you are not getting the proper feedback as to where the dollar went!

Nobody ever got more than a dollar back. The clerk gave each guy $1.00, and he kept the other $2.00. He didn't take change up. Even if he had we already came to realize there would be small change in the equation. Even if he gave them change, and they split the tip evenly, it would have no relevance or change to the outcome.

Lost Dollar

Where someone lost a dollar was in the room cost.

Room cost was $25/3 makes $8.3333 per person. Add the $3 refund and the $2 tip to get $30.

Each person paid $9.33 for the room and $0.67 tip.

The extra penny (you saw in the other post) is a virtual penny from the rounding not an actual penny paid out.

it should work either way you try to figure it but thats why there is a rule you cant multiply before you subtract on probelms like this 30 bucks for the room subtract 5 is 25 then add 1 a piece for the 3 bucks he gave back is 28 plus his 2 he kept is 30

Im looking at it in a simple way.........they actually paid $27 for the room which inluded a $2 tip........3x9=27 then got $3 change or $1 each which equals the $30.

This is a math anomaly that has intrigued many people through the ages.

If we look it in word form: Three guys pay 10 which equals 30. the clerk returns five and they only take 3 and return 2 for a tip. if we change this to an equation it would look like the following.

3x10=30-3=27/3=9x3=27+2=29

If you look at it as the 3 people are a whole the equation would change and it would be possible to figure the equation with basic math, as in the following.

3x10=30-5+3+2=30

The way the equation is written is what makes the equation a mathematical anomaly!

The fallacy is created by adding the 2 dollar tip to the total the three guys paid because the 2 dollars is in the 9 dollars each paid not in addition to what they paid. 25 + 2 = 27 or 3 x 9. The difference between that 27 dollars and the 30 originally given to the clerk is the 3 dollars the guys got back. Good puzzler to work a tired brain.

wow, you think losing a dollar is bad? Imagine if 4 guys rented a room for $40 but it was only really $35 so the clerk gave them 5 ones back, they each got one and gave the clerk the left over dollar. They "paid" $9 each right? $9 X 4 = $36 + $1 tip HOLY SMOKES THEY LOST THREE DOLLARS!!!!!
