-- anybody up north using barrels? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=460992)

I've used them down south but not up here.

Walls and ceiling are fully insulated plus dogs have an arctic entry to break the wind. I have a thermometer in the top of the back corner so even at 1 degree this morning with 25mph winds the inside was above 30.

I have used plastic barrels since they came out. You can put a plastic barrel with lots of straw next to a Igloo and the dog will use the plastic barrel. The key is to face them south and to keep a lot of straw in them, especially in real cold weather. You can easily make a cradle for them out of scrap 2x4s to keep them from rolling and off of the ground. My dogs always tore any flap I made for the off of them.

Chadf,

I used dog houses I built very similar years ago. The only two differences was I had an empty air space in the wall between the insulation and the wood wall, and I made the interior much smaller. In fact, for a 60 lb. hound the inside interior space was 28"x 28". It is much easier for a dog's body to heat up a smaller space than a larger one.

barrels

I have used them for years. You can bolt legs on them or put them on a frame. You will need to drill 6 little holes in the bottom to let condinsation out.Fill them with straw or shavings and they last for ever. You can disinfect them also with no issue.

Send me a # and i will send you a pic of mine.
