My daddy had me out in the woods at least by the time I was three. He just brought a sled and a blanket so if I got tired I crawled right in.

My daughter is 4 she comes along about three nights a week. She can call most of our hounds and will walk through any thing to get to a tree. Some times she is a little to honest with a person. Nobody goes out hunting around here without her.

You can't keep them out to long, let them get bored or get cold. I started letting mine go hunting with me when they was about three or four. You have to keep it short and rewarding. Expose them to all kinds of hunting, dove, deer, coon, etc create a love for the outdoors. Make them wear ear plugs if shooting.
Now the boys are 15 and 17, they would go every night if I would let them. One of them's twin sister goes whenever her sports activities let her. She's just as tough as the boys.lol
As Toe Cutter posted on another site if starting out, start with a finished dog. I got my boys an old grade dog seven or eight years old that was too old to cut it with young dogs, his voice was pretty much shot, but when you cut him, he's very accurate and will have a coon, although it takes him a while to get there. It made it fun for the boys, they just call him "Meat", they get the biggest kick out of him putting in on some so called "good dogs". They had been given a pup that was a absolute train wreck, they have put four or five hard months into the dog and sure are proud of what the old dog and them have turned it into. I let them buy themselves a couple of well bred blue pups, they'll be big enough to start by Dec 1st. I use hunting as a motivator for grades, anything lower than a 'B' and you don't go. Grades are better than ever.
You starting your boys and girls out right, I don't have to worry about mine being in trouble, their in the woods.
