I SEE YOUR POINT WHITEBREAD...PERSONALLY IF A DOG THAT I AM HUNING DOESN'T SHOW ME ANYTHING TO SOMEWHAT EXCITE ME THEN I LOSE INTEREST IN THEM VERY QUICKLY... IF I SEE SOMETHING I CAN WORK WITH THEN I HUNT THE FUR OFF OF THEM.... I AGREE 9 MONTHS IS SOON FOR A DOG TO BE BROKE, BUT IF IT'S NOT INTERESTED IN THE COON BY NOW THAT SEEMS TO ME TO BE A PROBLEM... THERE'S TOO MANY YOUNG DOGS OUT THERE THAT WOULD DO A BETTER JOB IMO... HUNT SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO HUNT IT MORE NOT ONE THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOURSELF TAKE HUNTING

I guess I should have done that with the male I have here too. I got him when he was 13 months old. The first cage coon he seen he took off with his tail between his legs. We then took him to the woods a week or so later just to walk him around while our preacher hunted his black dog and his son had his walker. The walker was there to show us how to get it done right in the swamp land we were hunting in.

Preacher and his boy cut their dogs loose. A few minutes later Ol Blue was winding. I told my wife to cut him loose, in five minutes he was treed 542 yards deep on the garmin. A few minutes later the walker was split to the left and the black dog to the right. We checked Ol Blues tree first He had 3 coons in his tree, checked the walker's he has a possum. The boy hunted this dog hard. He said it was the first possum he ever treed and I believe him, but to this day it is a story to laugh at. The black dog had a coon in hers.

My dog started this way and is treeing consistently every night in the woods, out of 100 or so nights of hunting he has only shown one slick tree and no possums yet. Knock on wood. So think before you call, get them in the woods.

how's she bred?

Sounds like a Paycheck female I gave away.2 y.o. and terrified of a coon. She'd kill every chicken she could get to.Made no effort to hunt, unless there were chickens around.

I see why their are so many young dogs for sale on here. PEOPLE LACK THE KNOWLEDGE OF TRAINING HOUNDS! From what I have seen over the years a dog will chase and tree before they bark or fight a cage coon. I think hounds now days are way over worked on cage coon. Pulling the coon up and down in the tree, trying to get the dog jumping on the tree. This creates tree jacking. Turn a coon loose and let the dog do what they are meant to do.

If my dogs had to bark at or fight a cage coon when they were starting out or get a bullet, they would all be dead.

I'LL AGREE THAT DOGS ARE OVERWORKED ON CAGE COONS!!! SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY WAY THAT MOST WILL START A PUPPY...HOWEVER, THE POST IS ABOUT A DOG THAT IS TERRIFIED OF A COON, NOT ABOUT A DOG THAT WON'T BARK AT ONE. IF THE HUNTER IS AFRAID OF THE HUNTED THEN HOW EFFECTIVE CAN THEY BE?

As you have read in one of my previous posts I have a dog here that was afraid of them too. This is the best dog I have ever owned. He also did not want anything to do with the coon after they were shot out. He will fight them now after getting other dogs on one that has been shot out. It may take some time. I did not shoot any out until he made ten trees. After that I started shooting them out. After about ten more, he started fighting them hard.

IF THE HUNTER IS AFRAID OF THE HUNTED THEN HOW EFFECTIVE CAN THEY BE? [/B][/QUOTE] My dog was afraid of a cage coon and we took him to the woods and he was sitting under three coons in 5 minutes. How effective is that? That was in a post also.

I have a 10mnth old and when we put a caged coon in front of her, she just sits there and stares at us, like shes telling us "you idiots, its already caught". But when we are out, she definitely trees, still young so we are just making it fun but your pup may be smarter and realizes that the darn coon is already caught!

I just got a litter mate to my male back. The first coon I shot out to my male and him. My male jumped it and fought it. The coon nipped at the litter mate and he ran off. I think with time he will make a coon dog as well. The guy that had him was trying to work him on cage coon and he wanted nothing to do with it. He did not have another dog to help him out. The first night in the woods he treed hard with my male. I think I will let him make another ten tree before I shoot another out to him.

This whole litter is turning out to be the right kind. Paul Vaughn with Mad Dog kennels has a female, Allan Ellison another Hazel Hill man and I have two males. Easy to train, start treeing first, no cage trapped coon or drags required, just put them in the woods. They may not like to fight a coon at first, but they will once they get going. I just hope they reproduce their likeliness. If you guys want pups that are afraid of coon give me a call. I may have a litter soon.

well here's the deal... cetain people look for certain qualities in a young dog and base all of their decisions based on what they see or what they don't see... if you want the dog to turn out then you have to put the time in... some will and some won't... they might have awesome traits and actions and wind up being the dumbest thing that's ever been on the end of your leash... or just the opposite... it's either in them or it's not either way and it's up to you to bring it out of them which requires lots of time and patience... so basically it's up to you what u wanna do with the dog... ultimately it's your decision on whether the dog is worth your time or not... personally i like for dogs generally to be coon crazy... maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't but it gives me the desire to find out what is in that dog... i would much rather work a dog that shows a lot of interest in what he is hunting is all i'm saying... u guys asked opinions and that's what i'm giving here... everyone has their own thing way of doing things

i agree 100% i never show my pups a caged coon unless i'm turnin it loose in front of him and i've had them start runnin and treein their own coons within two coons turnt loose, they would learn very quickly but i dont sit there and drag it up and down a tree eventually you keep doin that and thats all they'll know they wont know how to run or do it therself thats what you see pups on here that says lightly started i went to s.c last here to buy two pups a man quarenteed me they would tree their own coons, tried them for a week and they would even go huntin or run a turnt loose coon so i shipped them back.if they aint doin it @12 months i ship them summers,as far as ppl sayin i gotta 26 month old pup, what is a 26 month old pup i've never seen one, thats a two year old dog not a pup....

You didn`t get it! Have you not seen ads ran as 26, 24, 23 etc.etc.
month old pup for sale, already "treeing on cage coons"? Well, I have, I also wondered what a 26 mo. old pup was.
