Sometimes a dog gets out of my rusty old pens and i hear him treed when I get back home and ends up all I got is my rifle that stayes in the truck and my keychain light. But I can find them with a bic lighter if I need to. A compass? A compass? I wouldn't trust one unless I had three all saying the same thing. Id rather trust my judgement and it is about a 50/50 so far. A coon in the moon light with the moon greater than 45 degree angle ain't got a chance in hell in an evergreen though if I decide I am going to get that coon I'll wait it out.
Garmins have not reached one half of their potential untill they are strapped on the coon, to heck with a dog, if a dog barks I know where a dog is, but a coon bees quiet mostly so there you go. Would you like to know where the coon is right now and look on the screen to see it past by where the dog struck half hour ago but it is going the opposite direction from where the dog is going ( called back tracking). If you ain't got a Garmin on the coons you will never ever know alot of stuff we sit on the tailgate and make up a bunch of bull about. But that's down the road I recon. The future of lying dogs is in peril.
By the way, I hunt on 12,000 acres , 2,000 marsh and you can't get lost cause i got enough night vision to see the hill edge or be swimmin one. The othe 10,000 acres pretty much has two rut tracks all over. Then the question becomes which way get back to the truck the quickest but I know I won't starve to death by morning. There is a block call the bigwoods but I don't ever hunt it because there are so many more places I can hunt in my Bass loafers and never wet a toe. Also the stupid dogs you leave inthe box going to the tree making all that racket won't ever say a word on the way out when you need them too.

When you really start hunting a dog and doing it right and the dog is decent, it actually gets pretty boring to me hunting them as much as you need to. I mean how many times can you listen to the strike, run and tree before its like watching your favorite movie over and over and over. When your running a decent dog dog in a good coon populated area it really shouldn't be a challenge to tree coon and it can get old.
I cut the dog, sit with the garmin in one had and the phone in the other and go get the dog when its treed and repeat till I get tired. IF the dog gets too far away or close to the road I move towards it, if not I just wait till its treed and go get it. Its just nice having the garmin so you know where the dog is at and you can text or talk in peace instead of listening to the dang thing all night.

okay, i am sooo sorry for what i am about to say to you. if it is that boring, get out of the woods and sell your dog. i have been hunting my dog right, and his voice never prompted me to "interupt" a cell phone call or a good game of solitaire on my phone (which i usually leave behind cause i forget it). sounds like you are a perfect candidate for your perfect dog to sit without a garmin, or your telephone. talk in peace??? why are you in the woods to begin with if you want to talk on the phone or text??? wow. was i baited into this one or not??? is this person really serious about what they said??? did they train their own dog from a pup? dont want to listen to the dog, dont go. simple. just a very simple solution to a woman that needs to be sitting in a bar bragging about all their wisdom and needs to own a cat.

just last night i went out with more dogs than i had collars for. so i chose to let my 7 mon old kemmer cur go without one. the grown dogs went and she went with the grown dogs. after awhile all the grown dogs came back but not the puppy. now i'm kicking myself and wondering what i'm going to tell my wife, since she's claimed the puppy to be hers. i get suited up and stepping into the woods when out there 50 yrds i see her collar light flashing. man, what a relief. i don't know what took her longer to come in, she's smart and usually beats the other dogs back. i was thinking she got snake bit and laid down to die. if i had a tracking collar i could have quickly found her, with the help of her flashing collar light and brought her out. i won't release her again without a tracking collar. i've put too much into her and don't care to experience the heart ache of losing her or any of my dogs..

well, i am not in mckean county first of all. and i hope you never have children you want to take hunting, you might get bored after the first kill and sit in your truck and watch a dvd. i didnt take too much offense to your post, if you want to hunt from your pickup, so be it. that is not why alot of us hunt or hunt our dogs. i want to make my dog and i the best we can be for a sport that i love and obviously my dog loves to do. so, like i said the first time, you might be happier with a cat in the truck with you and your dvd. if that is your sat. night special, so be it. to each their own. i dont prefer to sit in a truck watching god knows what by myself on a sat. night.
bye the way, any saturday night with my dog in the woods is a good night.

It's a PEICE OF MIND really, and if someone wants that peice of mind, it dosn't mean they're any less of a die hard coonhunter. That's just how I feel about it.

i never meant this thread as an arguement though. just a rehash of old versus new and the extremes or not extremes people would go for the love of the sport. an extreme in this lifetime would be going without technology. i was just thinkin about what i was doing a year ago with skeet with just a flashlight and what had changed with us and how much i , i said i , pay attention to him now with a garmin on. there is a difference. i love the safety net of a tracking collar, but i also love the safety net of my dog i trust. not everything works out though, i know.
geminite, what is the difference you feel between running your dogs on garmins or not??? is their a certain closeness you get to your hounds without or not?? is there a sense of security that could be false with the tracker????? do you rely on it too much and not your dog now???
see, i have alot of questions. not meant as an arguement.
just like the question, can people hunt just as well without a game camera????
just questions. always willing to learn.

NO WAY!! I can't stand kids movies..... I actually have a doublecab pickup with a window that goes up like a limo between the front and back seats in case the youngsters get to annoying. Its sound proof and tinted. Crack a back window and your good for the night.
heck maybe Garmin can come up with a kids collar and I can watch them on the screen all the way to the dog. They can leash it and walk it back. Now your thinking Ms. Yenny!!!

and that = maybe ought to run a dog without one so you dont have a heart attack when the screen goes dead when you are in your truck listening to movies and cant hear your dogs.

OK lets says you turn a dog loose with a garmin on and all the above goes wrong. Your still no better off than if you hadn't put it on at all, so really, whats your point?
THAT IS MY POINT SILLY GOOSE. geez.
and i have had one on my dog before, geez, read the posts.
QUIT TRYING TO ARGUE WITH ME, IT IS QUITE TIRING. it is just questions i had an inkling to ask.
betcha you failed philosophy 101.

For real, it isn't like when you put the garmin collar on you HAVE TO look at the screen at all if you choose not to. In fact, most times you are probably better off because you will only get madder than a hornet seeing what the dog is doing. That being said, I love it. I know where the dog is, how far it is, whether I am walking in the right direction, whether it is stationary treed or still running, whether its in someones yard, trucking down the road, or standing in the corn 25 feet from me messing around. I like being glued to the screen and thats my perogative.
Would I hunt without a garmin if I absolutely had to, I guess I would, but I sure woudn't enjoy it half has much as I do now and the amount of time it has saved me walking around or driving around to dogs can't be measured.

Kelley your right you dont need a Garmin. You also dont need a washing machine, a rock down by the creek will work just fine. And that heater and airconditioner in your truck, rip em out.
We are all pretty spoiled and i wouldnt have it any other way.

Lets see here ,if you have a teenager and he or she is on a date, would you like him or her to take a cell phone with them or leave it at home? Years ago it didn't bother me, today My kids will not leave home with out them, same as any dog I take to the timber wont get cut loose without some sort of tracking device. Has nothing to do on how I feel about coonhunting, It's all about the secure feeling I have why there wearing them . I know I have done all I can do to protect dog or child.

I've spent enough nights out there driving around and listening for dogs. And even with a tracking system, driving around trying to pin point them. I'm going to use my Garmin every time.
I guess it depends on the dog, if you have ones that go hunting like the ones I usually end up with, a Garmin/Tracker is a must.
