you can probly build them cheaper than you can buy them i build mind out of 2by 4s and 1/2 plywood and i put plywood on the inside and outside put insulation in between makes a good warm box if you cant afford all the matirals at one time just get what you can till you get it all you got all summer to build them now

Dog Den 2

I use a Dog Den 2 by K9 Condo for my bluetick. I live in NH and we get some real cold snaps in the winter. These houses are doubled walled with insulation all around. On 10 degree nights I have put a wireless temp monitor in the house just to see what is really going on in there. The air temp was in the 50's. When the dog comes out, he is toasty warm.

I have owned this house for 5 years now and it is in the same condition it was on day one, just dirty. The dog cannot chew this house and it is a breeze to clean.

When I was a young pup back in the mid 60's my dad used oak whiskey barrels, nailed 2x2's on bottom so it wouldn't roll. Cut out one end for entry and put gunny sack over front in winter to keep wind out, filled with straw, they worked fine.

that could be bad in the heat ,but if the dogs are that dumb to go in one when its that hot out ,what can you say for the dog,,
i make sure they have a tree for shade in the summer or peace of plywood canapoy off the side of the barrell for shade spot.

i'v put wooden box's next to blue plasic drums and the dogs perfer the barrells,,i use the extra large wooden boxs for them to have pups in and when the pups get weened and get separated from mommy, pup the barrells in the pen so then they can choose what they want to sleep in..they dont like those highdollar squaire plastic box's from tractor supply.all my dogs but 2 have blue barrells.
in the winter i just stuff them full of straw and they make a hole in it and the straw pushs up in front of the door hole, if it gets too warm they will stick their head out.

goodwill here sells the blue 55gal barrells for around $8 and tax

joe at 13 1/2 yrs old ,died around 14 1/2 ,spent last 12 of those yrs in his barrel.

little moe and his barrell

gunners barrell is under floor of puppy kennel for added shade, dont like the white barrells ,will crack in the winter if the heavy dogs jump on top of them .

half walker/redbone ,born in and raised on blue barrell

joe jr around 10 yrs old born and raised in blue barrell, just add more straw when it gets cold,he will lay in his barrell and nusence bark if he dont have just the right amout of straw to suit him..

if i had some dirt banks i'd did a hole out in the bank and slide the barrells back into the holes so the ground would keep them cool in the summer..

i have 9/16 drillbit holes in the bottom so the water will drain if some gets in and try to set them with the back of the barrell uphill with the opening away from the way the wind blows so snow and rain dont blow directly into the opening,,tryed the burplap/rubber mudflaps over the doors ,didnt last long,my dogs didnt like it and wasnt on them more than 2-3 days.,just fill with straw,if too much straw they will dig it out to their likeing..at least mine do..
hope this helps you all.

the store here sells them for i think 7;95 + tax ,
if the dont have any in stock you can order them.
a friend told me today she went this week and they were out and they took her order for how ever many she wanted.

most of my dogs are on chains but if i had reg kennels.
i'd take some 4 x 4's and cut a cradle in them and screw the barrell to them top and bottom and make a brace from the bottom next to barrell to the outer edge of the top cradle and put plywood on top for shade and place for the ones that like to get up off the ground to lay on top of barrell.like a leantoo on top.
but on a chain can be a pain getting caught on corners of board.

This is the way I have my barrels fixed to keep from rolling around. Had all the lumber in scrap from other projects around the house and got the barrels for nothing. Can check with local carwash, some will just give them away to keep from them having to dispose of them and others will sell them for like $5-10. just want tp make sure that any barrel is rinsed out very very well. Everything being under roof, in the summer my dogs dont go inside the barrels at all unless its a side blowing rain, otherwise they just sleep and relax on top, day and night.
