How about houndswomen? I got to give credit to my wife because she takes care of my hounds most of the time. I just hunt them. She also pays special attention to them when they have puppies. NO SHE'S NOT FOR SALE!!!

Some of you may be too young to remember Ted Ramey. I enjoyed many hunts with Ted back in the day. He always had a fine hound at the end of his leash, whether it be his or one he was hunting for someone else. RIP Ted.

I have seen some pretty good dog trainers. But in my opinion Chuck Dunlap of Frazeysburg Ohio is one of the very best. He has trained some of the best dogs in the country, Buck Creek Mr. Smith , Eye Knot , and Nocturnal Traxx to name a few but the list goes on and on.

Its a long list for me

Well I've had the pleasure of hunting and knowing some real good hounds men. Some of them where just local guys that could tell you what a hound was doing, what it was getting ready to do and what it had done. The names are Charlie Smith, Willard Pray, Mike Parish, Asa Briggs jr. Gordy Sebert, Joe Galvas, Ben Crocker I have hunted with these guys and feel I can call them all friends. The not local 1 is Slugo. I hunted with this man 1 time and let me tell you this fella can get a hound to walk on water if anyone can. It has been my pleasure to hunt with all the above mentioned fellas.

I still got some 45s i got from Ernies Record Mart. First Mart I ever herd of , you reckon Wall liked it too? My job was to put my hand behind the radio to make it focus on Tennessee AM as a twelve year old and my older friends bees playing ping pong and dreaming talkin of the upcoming or past weekend. Thank gawd, NAMBLA never had a chance with me!! Thanks Cass Cuz.

Cass Walker sponsored Ernies Record Mart for ya'll on the lack of knowlege side.LOL
Or vice versa!!!

O.L. Beckham was the best, what he didnt deal with in quality he made up for in quantity.

I never did try a dog of his but got to hunt with plenty of em that folks got from him and all of them went right back to the auctions.

I went down to Cass Walkers back in the late 70s to try out a dog and what an experiance there was atleast 5 others there and I dont even remember how many dogs but Cass loaded the dogs we were thinking on and away we went.

I thought that he would just turn a couple loose at a time but oh no he turned a half dozen or so out all at the same time and the timber went to shaking what with all those trade dogs bellowing thru the woods running no telling what (the good Lord only knows) cause none of us had a clue!!

well two or three ran out of hearing so things settled down to a dull roar then a couple came back to keep us company for the rest of the night and two or three got together and actually treed a few coons that night.

when we get back to the vehicles Cass says well boys whadda ya think (me and my older kept our mouths shut) as we knew he didnt want to hear what we was thinking.

to my amazment these two ole boys wanted to buy the same two hounds and then the price haggling began over a blue dog and an english dog, whats the papers on this one and whats the papers say on that one back and forth so Cass opens the glove box and pulls a whole handfull of papers out and of coarse the peds are chock full of high powered titled dogs so these two guys are out bidding each other and Cass is just leaning beside his truck nodding his head and telling em what their wanting to hear once in awhile.

the best I remember he sold the english for $1200 and the blue dog for $1100 then without missing a beat turns to us and asks well are you gonna buy the black dog and when I told him no he asks me why not and when I told him because it was I couldnt tell what the dog done he said what do you mean you just saw him tree three coons and I said back to him I couldnt tell anything about the dog except that the dog would tree with other dogs Cass acted disapointed in my lack of knowing what genuine good coondog was after seeing it in action.

oh well I guess I just missed out!! LOL

That's great . Wouldn't you still love to get haggled out of your money than to buy a dog that went somewhere and treed a coon from any body but Cass Walker ? I still can't get too impressed unless a dog will start it AND beat the pack to the tree. But just to either leave the county or just step over there and not have another dog around just don't imprees s me at all. Like your story goes , it is very hard to get impressed by a dog jockey that cannot show you a dog out running , outdoing, another dog. So I keep a bunch of my money that Cass could have got cause the peoples trying to do the BSin these days ain't yet up to Cass.

BUT, ON the Other hand, Like Randy Travis may ax

Why could not you tell what he had done versus what the other dogs did do? Were you too far away to know what was going on?

that was the whole deal you couldnt know anything about the dog but that it would tree good WITH other dogs and that it would bark on a coon track WITH other dogs because you could hear all three on track but didnt know which dog was which also it hunted WITH other dogs and if Cass knew the differance in the dogs voices he sure didnt say anything.

I think he was asking about $1000 for each dog and even though I was still a teenager I wasnt green enough to plop down any money for a dog that I couldnt tell anything for sure about.

I almost forgot that after those guys made the deal and we loaded the dogs that were still there up we asked him about finding the other dogs and he said "naw they'll show up at a house somewhere and everyone in these parts know me" and will call if a hound shows up.

Cass did ask us if we wanted to go try it out again the next night as he had some more guys coming to try some more dogs out. but I told him no thanks.

but that black dog COULD have been the very best dog in the world for all we learned about it.

I left an honest country coon dog with James Atwell for three nights of hunting. This was a dog that I had started as a pup and he could tree the daylights out of coon, but was a backtracking loose treeing fool. I had worked the back tracking out of him over the course of 2 years of hard hunting, but he still was a poor quality tree dog. James hunted him for three nights in a row, and for the rest of his life he was 100 times better on the tree. I wish I knew what James did, but he made a lasting impression on that dog.

Hard to say who the best dog man is, but based on the fact that year after year, decade after decade Frank Giddings has a top quality dog on the end of the leash, I am surprised no one has mentioned him. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

Marion Baldwin from North Carolina. Always had really good hounds and never had to go and buy any of them. He passed away last year and is definitely missed.

Bill Morris in Ky never hunted with him but from what I have read he has got to be the best.

Leonard [the mossman ]Morris or William {bigWillie ]Wells, these two guys can tell what a dog is doing before it does it and they handle a dog every nite they hunt it!!!I think Willie learned a lot of his training from moss .

My picks

Starting young pups is Terry Perkins of LA. and as far as bloodlines and knowledge would be Chuck West.
