End of story. You'd be pretty sore if you got beat by a dog that treed a grinner at the end of the hunt but got away with it because he was never actually called treed.
I know I, myself would not consider a dog that treed a possum within hunt time or just out to be the best dog in the cast if no other dogs treed any off game.

it was in june or july. i was hunting in a rqe. we cut loose in a creek. didnt know at the time but there was feeder 50 ft up the creek. dogs open as soon as we cut them they slam a tree. my dog is treeing while standing in the middle of the creek. as we are waiting for the last dog to be treed my dog takes a drink of water for about 10 sec. we are 50 ft from the dogs and the judge,(also the guide) throws the light on him and minus him. 90+ degrees that night and less than 10 min in the hunt.
I thought one time there was a rule could meet the handler off the tree and if he went back and "treed satisfactorily" it was OK. When did that rule get replaced? I think the way they use it now is a dog has to keep getting his head higher and higher because if he ever puts his head lower they will be called for "putting their head down and going back on trail". LOL
I don't think a dog should be able to be minused or scratched for anything done while on the chain.
I can understand scratching a dog that treed an oppossum while the clock was running even though he was never called treed, but once you put your leash on that dog, he is no longer hunting. Some dogs will do a lot of things on the leash that they wouldn't do if they were hunting.

The zones ( Ashland, Oh)
The second or third drop we cut loose around the **** of a pond that had a wover wire fence on one side and of course the pond on the other side. Maybe 30 seconds in we here dogs had caught something, we tured our lights on and maybe 30 yards in front of us two dogs have a skunk that they are eating. Well one of the dogs our the judges dog, as we are standing there we here a loud stomping noise and a bunch of cattle are pushing the other two dogs back around the dam of the pond. The dogs have no wheres to go but back towards us. Mind comes almost back to us than cuts around the cattle and the other dog goes into the pond and around the cattle. They go and get treed. I asked the judge if they are going to put there dogs up or lead them into our tree and he replies, " If I'm scratch we are all scratched". Of course me and the other guy are flipping out and ? is call and I think its a no brainer. This so called Judge tells the master of hounds that he felt our dogs got to close to the skunk when they went by and the dang master of hounds up held his decision. So I asked him why he upheld and he got smart azz with me and said his decison was final and he didn't like it when I said I hope my dog don't get close to no cows or man I'm in trouble.
As far as the Judge, Ole buddy I haven't forgot that night and sure haven't forgot who you are.
