-- Rides at a nite hunt (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=412428)
Thank Goodness there are still good people out there willing to share a ride. When I was a young man and traveling to the big hunts, we always buddied up and traveled 2/3 people in one truck to get there. I always was able to find a ride to the woods. I want to thank every man that gave me a ride. I'm now older I find many of my old friends have hung up their competition lights and have quit all together or only pleasure hunt, thus leaving me to travel to more hunts flying solo or with one other guy.
My way of paying forward to this sport is to gladely providing a ride to any man/woman/child that needs one. That courtesy was extended to me when I needed it and that is the very least I can do to help my fellow hound enthusiest. Feel free to hop in when I'm driving, I'll enjoy the conversation to and from the woods.

Well the way I look at it is if I go to a hunt I have my truck im prepared!but if someone wants to ride hop on in I dont care. I think you have more fun and make more friends that way! I on the other hand would NEVER go to a hunt and not have a ride! I am the handler of my hound on this hunt and i should not have to rely on anyones kindness because lets face it theres not much of that out there anymore! I think its fun to go to these hunts and have a good time thats what its all about so in my opinion hop on in lets go huntin!!
Rides
A lot of people are not offering rides to people at the bigger hunts because they are hoping they will withdraw. I seen this happen at setwd's both night to one of our younger guys that went with us. Its hard to drive 8 trucks with high as gas is. I always have them offer gas money with whoever they ride with but trust me people are using this against people who don't have rides and its ashame. This needs to stop before it catches own and brings down the numbers at hunts, put something in the rules where the club finds them a ride and have someone guide them on hunted to death public land. That will be one thing to do, I know I'm venting about it but I don't like to see people mis treated or taking advantage of.
i just dont see how its unsportsmans like or mistreating people or taking advantage of them etc etc....
its not anyones fault but your own that you showed up to a nite hunt and need a ride...
i dont got a problem helping anyone out...ive stopped in the pouring rain in the middle of the nite to help a guy change a tire that im sure without my help he wouldnt have gotten changed (car fell off the jack as i jumped outta my truck!) always do stuff like that and help anyone when i can....but, bumming a ride at a nite hunt just rubs me the wrong way....
My Truck
My truck is at every hunt I go to. I have been given rides and have given rides. I don't have to like you or your dog but if your in my cast I have room to get you to the woods. I don't care if your being paid to hunt a dog or if you own the hound don't really matter to me. Like Jim said I expect to go back to the club anyhow for the win slip. I have driven over an hour to guide and won the cast helped a guy get his dog with the possibility of not making it back before the dead line. Ohwell its all about fun for me, I'm not rich by any short streach of the imagination but I'm not broke either. I don't ask for money if I give the ride and I usealy offer money/brakefast when we get back to the club house if I get a ride. To me its more about fun and making new friends.

Just hunting to have some fun.
Use only the Rules UKC has writen not the ones you think should be there!
i dont know but to me it seems as though about a third of the people that have replied to this post are against giving a fellow hunter a ride to the woods and back to the club house. An i have to say that this disgusts me and makes me wonder wth is going on in this country. the excuses i have seen from if your old enough to drive to i dont want to get my truck dirty are about the sorriest things i have ever heard and you all should be ashamed of yourselves. no, it isnt in the rules for you to give or not give a ride but really? you are going to spend all this time on a hunt and you cant drive an xtra hr to get someone back to the club house after you guided just because you lost? talk about a sore looser. really your excuse is you dont want to get your truck dirty yet you drive it to a coon hunt and in the theory you are going to get just as muddy as anyone else in the cast? having the privilage to be a guide or judge at your home club doesnt just mean you get the advantage to hunt on your home turf, it means you give someone a **** ride if they need it. why? because if you keep this crap up eventually you'll be holding events with yourself. it's sorry s.o.b's like you that will be the end of this sport.

try it you'll like it
I like taking my own rig its got all my stuff in it. I have never told anyone I would not give them a ride. However what I was saying in a earlier post is there are a few guys I would say no to. I am not gonna get into the reasons. They are the ones that have to look in the mirror.
last yr english days 1 hr from home all 3 guys needed rides..
ive got a dakota truck and it was hot..
i could take 2 if they wanted to doubble their dogs up..
1 had to find a ride as there just wasnt room for another dog in with mine.. and i really dont like hauling 2 per side in a small truck
box.. after we got here i stpaped another box on my tailgate and we hunted.. did not win the cast. and had to run them the 1 hr back and then drive back home again..
not even a thank you.. also dont really care to put strange dogs in my box.. why infect my kennels with someone elses sick dog.
and yes i have had it happen.. not saying i wont continue to give rides.. as i have many times. but sometimes it is a pain in the butt.

I dont comp hunt but I am on the fence about this. Giving a ride is great but the person catching the ride should realize this is your truck and your dog is NO. 1. If you catch a ride offer gas money, If you can afford to pay the fee then you should expect to pay for some gas or at least by the driver a snack or a coffee. How can you go to a hunt and EXPECT someone to drive you and your dog around.
I see crap like this in my Taxidermy business. They drop the deer or animal off and when it comes time to pay they dont have it. So now I dont start unless I get 50% deposit. If you dont pay it your anial will sit there. I just got a deer done and I have had since about the begining of December. And i tell them it will be about 3 to 4 months, well I call him and tell him it is done and he doesnt have the money to pay the rest right now. SO that will be deer no. 2 for the year that I will be stuck with. If the funds are so tight that you cant pay for your deer or pay for entry fee and the gas to drive then dont enter the hunt, simple as that. If someone offers to keep the cast together or to keep a minimal amount of vehicles so be it. But dont do it if you cant afford it.

I told the master of hounds what happened and his reply was ' Old Ron he don't like to lose, HAHAHA!!!!' It's not a good feeling to have this happen to you in the middle of nowhere.

"WOW"!
I gotta agree with dkrause on this one. I have pretty much always had my truck & plan to take it during the hunt. Anybody that needs a ride is welcome. Never took any gas money cuz I always figured I'm drivin it,or in my case now, ridin in it with generally one of my son's or buddy's. We all have the four door model's & there's been more than once in the past few years we've had hair & limbs stickin outa the window cuz we've got the whole cast with us.
I like to meet & talk to people myself. Sure it's about the dogs & for some ONLY the dogs. Like a tool if'n you will? I'm all for sharing especially in these times. Gas headed for $4.00 a gallon I think it only makes sense to limit havin'ta buy it? A thank you & I'm pretty much good to go but not beyond gettin a breakfast outa it if'n it's offered.
There are people that are ate up with this sport that are goin through hard times & gettin there by ridin with someone else. Scratchin to pay the entry fee & gas to & back from the hunt while prayin there will be at least one nice guy in the bunch that don't have a problem givin a fellow Coonhunter a ride. I'd rather add to the fire their feedin off'n instead of p!$$!n on it but I guess that just me. No better way to run some off after being denied or made a big deal over ridin with someone. Some like these ten dog hunts so they can make 'Ol Shep faster but personally I miss the days of 70 - 80 dogs & at times more. Let's not forget the three hour hunts as well. Makin a GrNtCh usta really mean sumthin & if you walked through the hunts then you had the goods on the business end of your lead & everybody knew it.
On the other hand I can understand everyone wantin to take their own truck. "BUT", when your headed a few hours or more away we always carpool. Just makes sense & way more enjoyable than slappin the trail alone. Guess I never realized that it was that big of a deal to bum a ride? Can't say's I've ever heard of that kinda anal retentativeness in these parts but I'm sure it happen's. Gaurantee it won't happen in our casts if I gotta ride in the back of the truck.
Speakin of that,I was at a hunt in Missouri one time years back & nobody would let me ride with them. After the master of hounds talkin to them I was finally offered a ride in the back of a lil Sh!t box truck with just the the guy drivin in it in the rain & hadta hold my dog with me cuz they didn't want my dog in their box. I figured they was playin the game which they where, gonna take advantage of the idiot ridin in the back of the truck from Wisconsin in the pourin down rain. I got soaked, like'ta have froze to death & had them hypothermia power shakes goin on to the point I couldn't hardly move when we got back. "BUT", I may have been treated like crap but I'm here'ta tell ya they didn't have near 'nuff dog cuz me & my soaked & frozen hound give'um an education.
I do recall bein told of people including youth hunters that where denied rides at Walker days last year to cut the cast down. That rite there is poor sportsmanship & cowardly. If ya think ya gota do sumthin like that then maybe you need a better dog that can compete with a full cast or sumthin.
Never had a problem with gettin beat by a better dog & I don't care if it's in my box during the hunt.
We all see things different & thats our rite but come on?

I think it is pretty sad that this conversation keeps coming up. Its easy, treat others like you'd like to be treated.
..........
.....sir...........I agree with you whole heartedly( two toes)...........the way I see it, I'm at the hunt anyway, why not help somebody out and act like a Christian????????......BUT.....here's the problem I have with what you wrote.................if folks are THAT destitute.......WTH are they doing at a HUNT instead of saving the $$$$ for dire needs that are SURELY more important?????

CWT,
I agree. Treat others like you would want to be treated. If someone chooses to refuse to give someone a ride, or if I give someone a ride and they take advantage of it or aren't thankful, I'll treat them differently the next time, but until then... simply treat folks like you'd want to be treated. That would fix a lot of problems in today's world.
It embarasses me that coonhunters would even need to have this discussion.

Sad, sad,sad
When I go to a hunt and I drive I always ask if someone want to hop in and if some asks if I want to hop in I usually take them up on it. I dont see the point of taking 4 trucks out on one cast. Most of the land owners I know of would rather only have 1 (if possible) or 2 trucks not 4 parked along the road or in a field. If you live close enough to guide you should be close enough to return to the club after your hunt is over.
I am greatful for the rides that were offered to me and never asked for anything but a thank you for the rides I given.
all good points
i live within an hours drive of bout 5 clubs two of which bout 30 min , so naturally iam judging and guiding - which i dont mind . i personally like to cut down trucks because some of my spots parking is limited , so i always offer rides and if a fellow offers gas money i take it and if not oh well . a few things i dont like to see is someone who wants a ride and has two spectators with them ! if your gonna have spectators you need to have ur own wheels period . if you go to a big hunt that requires several hours of travel then dont sign up and expect to hitch a ride - but most big hunts require guides within 100 air miles of a club to guide a fella should be sportman enough to at least offer because most people are staying in a hotel close by anyway . people need to lend a helping hand every once in awhile thats whats wrong with todays society .

I totally agree with dkrause and Two toes. It's just the right thing to do. I can't believe some people expect gas money. I dont mind driving. I always plan on needing to go back to the club when the hunt is over anyways or I wont go. If and when I get beat I'll gladly to the better dog that night back to the club. Most farmers I know dont need or want 4 stinking trucks driving up and down their fields either. Come on guys lets stick together the ANTIS have enough ammo and we keep fighting amongst ourselves. As long as your a COONHUNTER your a friend and friends ride free........Jon

I Know one thing I enjoy going to the hunts, but I don't comp. hunt and I am asked to guide so why should I have to burn up my gas to help you get a win on your dog when I am already giving up time to guide when i could be spending it with family or doing something else.
Yeah I can understand both sides of the matter. I went to Redbone Days last year. It was a 13 hour drive. Me and a friend went up there from GA. Well come time to leave for the cast I needed a ride. Of course everybody all stared at their feet even though they had plenty of room. Someone was coming back regardless and hell we was guided 2 hours away. One guy was even camped at the grounds and didnt want to help out. It was kinda rediculous the way some acted. I offered gas money as well. I can understand the "bums" but it dont take a rocket scientist to see why 2 people took one truck to Ohio from Ga. Makes me not even want to go again. I though it would be a nice experince to go to a big hunt like that, but I was wrong. Sportsmanship is out the window.

i see it at the big hunts more often than not . thats why i made a comment bout not relying on a ride at a big hunt cause seems like 3 out of 4 in a cast think they have to play the role of a s.o.b for some reason ? i like to win but iam not gonna deny a ride to someone to get it ! i understand people driving large distances and doubling up in one truck makes good sense with gas the way it is but to many people at these big events look for a reason to better their chances . just my opinion .
