THOSE ARE VERY NEAT THINK I WILL MAKE SOME OF THEM MYSELF...THANKS FOR SHARING...

Thats really neat. Wish I hand land to do that on. Of course knowing my luck I would open the den to check it and I would have a mean ol grumpy boar that wants to use my face as a chew toy.

Thanks for the idea!

fester, your den boxes are built on the classic style, deep and narrow, like a hollow tree. it seems it would be better if you built them as you did but mount them horizontally. that way the coon would have much more room. as it is, the coon rest at the bottom of a well. it takes a lot of lumber the usualy way. if you make it, say 14' x 14" and three feet tall, that's a lot of wood. and the coon still have little space. i built one from scrap 2' x 12" treated lumber, three feet long but always thought it was too narrow. then it occured to me to mount it horizontally. i haven't done it yet but that's the way i'm going. what do you think:"

I totally despise the one my neighbor has cuz it holds coons and every spring a sow finds it and decides to have little ones that make my dogs bark so I remove them from the area the coons that is

I like to mount the boxes vertically, the coons have plenty of room to hatch a litter, and like in a natural den tree they will pile on top of each other to stay warm in the winter.

I just hung this box a couple of months ago and already it has a coon in it. If this is a sow, you can clearly see she would have plenty of room.

In the next month or so I'll try and get some pics of some kits.
Hope this helps!

HERE IN MARYLAND THE COON HAVE KITTEN COON. WHERE DO YOU LIVE ? HOW MANY EGG'S DO THEY USALLY LAY ? YOU SAID THEY HATCH A LITTER. LOL JUST JOKING, JUST HAD TO ASK.

Posted by matt2 on 04-12-2012 12:18 AM:

I'll say this, your one cool dude. Any man that don't mind leaving the coon in the tree I wouldn't mind following him in the woods. Your boxes are great.

i think i wouldn't mind killing one or two if i had provided shelter that allow them to reproduce and save more little ones.

Very cool, thread. Can't believe I missed it. It would be pretty sweet to make the bottom plexy glass so if you happened to ever tree on it, you could see fur

Posted by bigtimberkennel on 12-22-2013 01:53 AM:

That's what I was thinkin',but on the side of the box.

Posted by buggy.paulus5 on 12-23-2013 08:58 PM:

den boxes look great

How high up do you put your boxes? ive seen people put small chicken wire in wood duck boxes to help the hen climb in and out do you put a grip strip in your boxes to help coon climb in and out? i couldnt tell in your pictures. These den boxes are a great idea giving back to the coon population today only improves your coon hunt tommorow

Make them out of plexyglass and we can get plus points on them.
