Why
Just one of the reasons I will never comp hunt any dog. Sounds like a bunch of Kids playing ball when the parents tell them Winning is the only thing. Don't enjoy anything you do unless you WIN. If you can't go hunting and enjoy yourself win or loose I will stay home. If you go and get what you feel is cheated stay home don't resort to cheating yourself JUST TO WIN
man according to rule 17,its a gray area:
Dog should not be minused tree points if he comes
back a short distance to meet handler if dog goes back
in and trees satisfactorily.
what is a short distance?
Im with GA on this if a dog come 75 yards "OFF TREE" its a minus
10 maybe 15 maybe not
and its been 10 -12 years since I comp hunted so I( went back and reread the rule........that was the rule then too
a friend of mine I used to hunt with, sydne holmes told me when I first started comp hunting a word of wisdom:
"EVERY DOG HAS A FAULT AND EVERY HANDLER KNOWS THE RULE TO COVER THAT DOGS FAULT"
seems like this is one of those situtions

People lets stop looking for a reason to minus someone so you can win!
Rule says a short distance, Why make it complicated, any idiot knows if the dog is actually trailing....Should it state 25 feet 25 yards??? Most dogs that come back to meet their handler will put their nose on the ground on the way back to the tree. But the rule says nothing about nose being on the ground.
Now all the judges must carry a tape measure in their pocket?
This is a joke. It really doesnt matter because most of these hunts are just won by the man who fights to get everything else minused out or scratched. NOT at all based on what dog trees more coons. Well at least when nobody shows up to your hunts , you wont have to cheat to win. Spend more time training a COON DOG instead of looking for ways to screw everybody else on the cast because you have your own interpretation of the rules.
JMO which isnt worth two scoops of crap but its how I feel. Youve got a lock down tree dog and Ive got a dog thats loose around the tree.... She is tight enough that I find the coon but she is less of a coon dog and should be minused because she didnt hug the tree like yours hugged that big slick that you will probably vote to circle.

The way I uderstand it, A dog can meet you a short distance at the tree as long as that dog is losing the cast, at the determined point that the dog is winning, or in danger of winning the cast, the dog will be at said time, Minused. Knowing that this is the way the rule will be enforced, I highly suggest breaking a dog from meeting you before you enter a Night Hunt, You Will Very Very Seldom Win With A Dog That Meets You More Than 5 Feet Off The Tree.

One time I was minused for this on the first tree, afterwards I said just withdraw my dog, they said why? You might as well hunt on, I said Ill get minused every time, this dog always meets me at the tree, they said aww come on hunt, we wont minus him no more. Thats how I learn the rule, After that I always break them from it. When they come off to you take a switch and give them a whack and put them back on the tree. They will soon quit meeting you.

if you tell at the begining of the hunt he will meet you then go back to the tree , no problem. if he comes off the tree and puts his nose down then im going to minus him. this happened all the time dont remember it being such a big deal.
I dont need to be told anything at the start of a hunt, I know the rules fairly well. Now if a dog comes of the tree a short distance to greet his handler, thats fine but trailing = minused. Hound needs to be back to tree and treeing satisfactory. JMO distance off tree 15 to 20' and more than that they need to do some more training. I work with my dogs off the tree if its 2 or 3', we tell get back there. Its an easy fix.
